Is Age Just a Number? Cognitive Reserve as a Predictor of Divergent Thinking in Late Adulthood

2016

The purpose of the study was to test a model of causal relationships among cognitive reserve (CR), personality variables such as Neuroticism and Openness to experience, and divergent thinking (DT), independently evaluating performance in different domains (verbal and graphic). It was hypothesized that CR, Openness, and Neuroticism would each directly influence verbal and graphic DT. A total of 135 subjects between 55 and 84 years old participated in the study and were interviewed in individual sessions. For a correct fit Neuroticism was eliminated from the measurement model. The goodness-of-fit indexes of the measurement model, the adequate composite reliability index and the discriminant v…

The Early Years Home Learning Environment – Associations With Parent-Child-Course Attendance and Children’s Vocabulary at Age 3

2020

Although many studies investigated the effects of the home learning environment (HLE) in the preschool years, the constructs that underlie the HLE in the years before the age of three and its effects on language development are still poorly understood. This study therefore investigated the dimensionality of the HLE at age two, its relation to the attendance of low threshold parent-child-courses, and its importance for children's vocabulary development between age 2 and 3 years against the background of differing family background characteristics. Using data from 1,013 children and their families of the Newborn Cohort of the German National Educational Panel Study, structural equation modeli…

An adaptive method for Volterra–Fredholm integral equations on the half line

2009

AbstractIn this paper we develop a direct quadrature method for solving Volterra–Fredholm integral equations on an unbounded spatial domain. These problems, when related to some important physical and biological phenomena, are characterized by kernels that present variable peaks along space. The method we propose is adaptive in the sense that the number of spatial nodes of the quadrature formula varies with the position of the peaks. The convergence of the method is studied and its performances are illustrated by means of a few significative examples. The parallel algorithm which implements the method and its performances are described.

Numerical and experimental study of hydrostatic displacement machine

2012

This paper presents a simulation tool to determine the structural deflections and corresponding leakage flow in a hydrostatic displacement motor. The simulation tool is applied to a new motor principle that is categorized as an extreme low-speed high-torque motor with dimensions that calls for attention to the volumetric efficiency. To counteract structural deflections the motor is equipped with compensation pressure volumes that may be used to limit the leakage flow across the end faces of the circular rotor. This leakage flow is investigated by solving Reynolds equation for the pressure distribution across both end faces. The fluid pressure is combined with structural calculations in a fl…

Técnicas de análisis de posproceso en resonancia magnetica parael estudio de la conectividad cerebral

2011

Brain connectivity is a key concept for understanding brain function. Current methods to detect and quantify different types of connectivity with neuroimaging techniques are fundamental for understanding the pathophysiology of many neurologic and psychiatric disorders. This article aims to present a critical review of the magnetic resonance imaging techniques used to measure brain connectivity within the context of the Human Connectome Project. We review techniques used to measure: a) structural connectivity b) functional connectivity (main component analysis, independent component analysis, seed voxel, meta-analysis), and c) effective connectivity (psychophysiological interactions, causal …

Numerical study of blow-up in solutions to generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations

2013

We present a numerical study of solutions to the generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations with critical and supercritical nonlinearity for localized initial data with a single minimum and single maximum. In the cases with blow-up, we use a dynamic rescaling to identify the type of the singularity. We present a discussion of the observed blow-up scenarios.

The dynamical equation of the effective gluon mass

2011

In this article we derive the integral equation that controls the momentum dependence of the effective gluon mass in the Landau gauge. This is accomplished by means of a well-defined separation of the corresponding "one-loop dressed" Schwinger-Dyson equation into two distinct contributions, one associated with the mass and one with the standard kinetic part of the gluon. The entire construction relies on the existence of a longitudinally coupled vertex of nonperturbative origin, which enforces gauge invariance in the presence of a dynamical mass. The specific structure of the resulting mass equation, supplemented by the additional requirement of a positive-definite gluon mass, imposes a rat…

Chiral symmetry andπ-πscattering in the covariant spectator theory

2014

The π-π scattering amplitude calculated with a model for the quark-antiquark interaction in the framework of the Covariant Spectator Theory (CST) is shown to satisfy the Adler zero constraint imposed by chiral symmetry. The CST formalism is established in Minkowski space and our calculations are performed in momentum space. We prove that the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity is satisfied by our model. Then we show that, similarly to what happens within the Bethe-Salpeter formalism, application of the axial-vector Ward Takahashi identity to the CST π-π scattering amplitude allows us to sum the intermediate quark-quark interactions to all orders. Thus, the Adler self-consistency zero for π…

Analytical Solution of the Richards Equation under Gravity-Driven Infiltration and Constant Rainfall Intensity

2020

In the field of soil hydrology, the Richards equation is commonly used to model water flow in unsaturated soils. The high nonlinearity of the Richards equation makes it very challenging to solve analytically for situations that are meaningful in practical applications. In this paper, an exact and simple analytical solution of the Richards equation under gravity-driven infiltration and constant rainfall intensity is derived. First, the solution is presented under Torricelli's law, which mimics the soil hydraulic conductivity function and describes the emptying or filling process of a nonlinear water reservoir. Then, following a similar approach, the solution is extended to the Brooks and Cor…

Application of minidisk infiltrometer to estimate soil water repellency

2016

Soil water repellency (SWR) reduces affinity of soils to water resulting in detrimental implication for plants growth as well as for hydrological processes. During the last decades, it has become clear that SWR is much more widespread than formerly thought, having been reported for a wide variety of soils, land uses and climatic conditions. The repellency index (RI), based on soil-water to soil-ethanol sorptivity ratio, was proposed to characterize subcritical SWR that is the situation where a low degree of repellency impedes infiltration but does not prevent it. The minidisk infiltrometer allows adequate field assessment of RI inherently scaled to account for soil physical properties other…
