Students' Perception of School and Their Smoking and Alcohol Use: A Cross-National Study

The objective of the paper is to study how 15 year old students' perceptions of the psychosocial environment in their schools, defined as student autonomy, teacher support, student support and demands, relate to smoking and alcohol use. Data from 15 year old students in Finland and Norway are included (n=2.816), using structural equation modelling to test theoretical models. The best model fitting the data shows that low student autonomy, low teacher support, student support and inadequate demands are significantly associated with health compromising behaviours directly, and indirectly through students' satisfaction with school. A model and a method providing a 3D reconstruction of a given translucent object from a series of image acquisitions performed with various focus tunings is proposed. The object is imaged by transmission; refraction, reflection and diffusion effects are neglected. It is modeled as a stack of translucent parallel slices and the acquisition process can be described by a set of linear equations. We propose an efficient inversion technique with O(n) complexity, allowing practical applications with a simple laptop computer in a very reasonable time. Examples of results obtained with a simulated 3D translucent object are presented and discussed.

Two mechanisms have been proposed to explain the secretory action of laxative compounds in the intestine: 1. increase of the intracellular amount of cyclic adenosine monophosphate due to stimulation of the adenylate cyclase system and 2. inhibition of intestinal transfer processes, in particular the Na,K-ATPase activated sodium absorption. In a set of in vivo and in vitro experiments in rat colon it could be demonstrated that dihydroxy bile acids (deoxycholate) and diphenolic laxatives (oxyphenisatin) enhance the hydraulic permeability of the mucosal tissue. Sense of coherence as a mediator between hostility and health

Abstract Objective: We proposed and tested a model in which low sense of coherence (SOC) was hypothesized to underlie the association between hostility and health problems. Methods: Structural equation modeling was based on cross-lagged 7-year follow-up data, relating to five measurement points in 433 female municipal employees. Results: The mediated model fitted well with the data. After adjustment for baseline characteristics, hostility was associated with increased risk of health problems, as indicated by records of sickness absences and poor self-rated health. Objective To assess the presence of dysfunctional rearing in adolescent females with ED and the role of psychiatric comorbidity as mediating variable of this relationship. Method Administration of a rearing-attitude questionnaire (EMBU-A) and a standardized psychiatric evaluation. Data from a two-phase epidemiological study and from ED inpatients. This study examined Internet and cybersex addiction in adolescents and how such behaviour was associated with substance use (in particular, cigarettes, alcohol, and drug use). Participants were 312 adolescents, aged 14-16, who completed survey instruments. Study measures included demographic, toxic substance use, expectancies toward substances consumption, antisocial deviance proneness, Internet, and cybersex addiction variables.
