Inhibition of astroglial cell proliferation by alcohols: interference with the protein kinase C-phospholipase D signaling pathway.
2000
Abstract Ethanol inhibits astroglial cell proliferation, an effect that may contribute to the development of alcoholic embryopathy in humans. In the present study, we investigated inhibitory effects of ethanol and butanol isomers (1-, 2- and t -butanol) on astroglial cell proliferation induced by the strongly mitogenic phorbol ester, 4s-phorbol-12α,13s-dibutyrate (PDB). 4s-Phorbol-12α,13s-dibutyrate (PDB) induced a 10-fold increase of [3H]thymidine incorporation in cortical astrocytes prepared from newborn rats (EC 50 : 70 nM) which was blocked by Ro 31-8220, a cell-permeable protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor. Ethanol blocked PDB-induced astroglial proliferation in a concentration-dependent …
Synthesis, physico-chemical and biological study of trialkylsiloxyalkyl amine coated iron oxide/oleic acid magnetic nanoparticles for the treatment o…
2008
New original water-soluble magnetic nanoparticles based on natural components, magnetite–oleic acid–biologically active silyl modified alkanolamine, were synthesized. Physico-chemical characterization, i.e. magnetic properties, concentration of magnetite, size of iron oxide core, of the nanoparticles synthesized and the corresponding magnetic fluids obtained, was carried out. Magnetic fluids were screened for in vitro cytotoxicity concerning human fibrosarcoma (HT-1080), mouse hepatoma (MG-22A) monolayer tumour cell lines and normal mouse fibroblasts (NIH 3T3). They possess low or moderate cytotoxic effects, are non-toxic, exhibit high NO-induction ability and strongly change tumour cell mo…
Unterschiede im Erhaltungszustand zwischen vorderem und hinterem Kreuzband bei rheumatoider Arthritis
2008
In rheumatoid arthritis (RA) we examined the cruciate ligaments of 16 patients by the use of light- and transmission electron microscopy. Considerable differences between the anterior (ACL) and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) were observed. The ACL showed dramatic ultrastructural changes, against that the PCL was compact and well conserved. The preservation of PCL in joint surgery can morphologically be recommended. Perhaps the greater inflammatory process on the surface of ACL is responsible for the observed differences.
Synthesis and biological evaluation of dehydroabietic acid derivatives.
2010
A series of C18-oxygenated derivatives of dehydroabietic acid were synthesized from commercial abietic acid and evaluated for their cytotoxic, antimycotic, and antiviral activities.
Dendrimer-coated magnetic particles for radionuclide separation
2005
Magnetic particles were synthesised for radionuclide removal from nuclear wastes by magnetic separation. Dendrimers with terminal amino groups attached to the particle surface were used to bind chelating groups for lanthanides and actinides. This led to a 50–400-fold increase of the distribution coefficients for europium and americium in comparison to the reference particles without the dendrimers. Back-extraction studies have demonstrated the possibility of multiple particle recycling.
Liver stiffness in chronic hepatitis C virus infection
2019
Abstract Introduction . The severity of liver fibrosis can be assessed noninvasively today by liver stiffness measurements. Vibration-controlled transient elastography, shear wave elastography or magnetic resonance elastography are techniques increasingly used for this purpose. Methods . This article presents the recent advances in the use of new techniques for liver fibrosis assessment in chronic hepatitis C: the correlation between liver stiffness values and liver fibrosis estimated by liver biopsies, the prognosis role of liver stiffness values, their usefulness in monitoring the treatment response, in assessing the severity of portal hypertension and in estimating the presence of esopha…
From human to artificial mouth, from basics to results

Major limitations have been reported during in vivo flavor release studies, such as marked intra- and inter-individual variability. To overcome these limitations, a chewing simulator has been developed to mimic the human mastication of food samples. The device faithfully reproduces most of the functions of the human mouth. The active cell comprises several mobile parts that can accurately reproduce shear and comp…

Stimuli-responsive hybrid materials: breathing in magnetic layered double hydroxides induced by a thermoresponsive molecule
2014
[EN] A hybrid magnetic multilayer material of micrometric size, with highly crystalline hexagonal crystals consisting of CoAl-LDH ferromagnetic layers intercalated with thermoresponsive 4-(4-anilinophenylazo)benzenesulfonate (AO5) molecules diluted (ratio 9 : 1) with a flexible sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) surfactant has been obtained. The resulting material exhibits thermochromism attributable to the isomerization between the azo (prevalent at room temperature) and the hydrazone (favoured at higher temperatures) tautomers, leading to a thermomechanical response. In fact, these crystals exhibited thermally induced motion triggering remarkable changes in the crystal morphology and volume. In…
Phase separated Cu@Fe3O4 heterodimer nanoparticles from organometallic reactants
2011
Cu@Fe3O4 heteroparticles with distinct morphologies were synthesized from organometallic reactants. The shape of the magnetic domains could be controlled by the solvent and reaction conditions. They display magnetic and optical properties that are useful for simultaneous magnetic and optical detection. After functionalization, the Cu@Fe3O4 heterodimers become water soluble. The morphology, structure, magnetic and optical properties of the as-synthesized heterodimer nanoparticles were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), mossbauer spectroscopy, superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry, and dark field imaging. A special a…
