Are elicitins cryptograms in plant-oomycete communications?

1999

Stimulation of plant natural defenses is an important challenge in phytoprotection prospects. In that context, elicitins, which are small proteins secreted by Phytophthora and Pythium species, have been shown to induce a hypersensitive-like reaction in tobacco plants. Moreover, these plants become resistant to their pathogens, and thus this interaction constitutes an excellent model to investigate the signaling pathways leading to plant resistance. However, most plants are not reactive to elicitins, although they possess the functional signaling pathways involved in tobacco responses to elicitin. The understanding of factors involved in this reactivity is needed to develop agronomic applica…

Cholesterol Modulates the Interaction of β-Amyloid Peptide with Lipid Bilayers

2009

The interaction of an amphiphilic, 40-amino acid beta-amyloid (Abeta) peptide with liposomal membranes as a function of sterol mole fraction (X(sterol)) was studied based on the fluorescence anisotropy of a site-specific membrane sterol probe, dehydroergosterol (DHE), and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the native Tyr-10 residue of Abeta to DHE. Without Abeta, peaks or kinks in the DHE anisotropy versus X(sterol) plot were detected at X(sterol) approximately 0.25, 0.33, and 0.53. Monomeric Abeta preserved these peaks/kinks, but oligomeric Abeta suppressed them and created a new DHE anisotropy peak at X(sterol) approximately 0.38. The above critical X(sterol) values coinci…

Functional exploration of the stress response in microorganisms of technological interest : dynamics of membrane response after an ethanol shock in S…

2015

The study of membrane response induced by ethanol stress in Saccharomyces cerevisiae aims to understand mechanisms involved in the survival of eukaryotic cells submitted to high ethanol concentrations. The cell membrane by its position between the intra- and extracellular environment is the first target of ethanolic perturbations. Experiments performed in this study aimed to characterize the maintain of the functional integrity of the membrane in relation to the sterol composition in the yeast S. cerevisiae submitted to different types of ethanolic disturbances: increasing concentrations of ethanol in the growth medium; ethanolic shocks of increasing magnitude; shock 20% ethanol for 15 minu…

Lipid content of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains with different degrees of ethanol tolerance

1992

We analysed the fatty acid and sterol compositions of various Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains with ethanol tolerance varying from 4% to 12% (v/v) ethanol and at different concentrations of ethanol. The results we obtained agree with the existence of a relationship between membrane fluidity and ethanol tolerance but they do not support a direct role of unsaturated fatty acids in this tolerance. On the other hand, they support the importance of ergosterol in this phenomenon.

Determination of fatty acids and lipid classes in salmon oil by near infrared spectroscopy

2017

International audience; Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was evaluated as a rapid method for the determination of oleic, palmitic, linoleic and linolenic acids as well as omega-3, omega-6, and to predict polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids, together with triacylglycerides, diglycerides, free fatty acids and ergosterol in salmon oil. To do it, Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression models were applied to correlate NIR spectra with aforementioned fatty acids and lipid classes. Results obtained were validated in front of reference procedures based on high performance thin layer and gas chromatography. PLS-NIR has a good predictive capability with relative root mean squar…

Muchomor czerwony (Amanita muscaria) jako obiecujące źródło ergosterolu

2012

Ergosterol (prowitamina D) jest jednym z głównych składników błon komórkowych grzybów. Ma on obiecujące właściwości immunostymulujące i przeciwrakowe. Muchomor czerwony stanowi bogate źródło ergosterolu, który po ekstrakcji n-heksanem lub octanem etylu łatwo jest otrzymać w formie krystalicznej. Fly agaric was extd. with n-hexane or EtOH optionally under microwave aid to recover ergosta-5,7,22-trien-3β- ol and other steroids. The highest yield was achieved by extn. of the gills, EtOAc was more efficient than n-hexane as a solvent. Ergosterol (ergosta-5,7,22-trien-3β-ol) jest biologicznym prekursorem (prowitaminą) witaminy D2. Jest to główny steryd błon komórkowych grzybów. Ponieważ rzadko w…
