A random-walk benchmark for single-electron circuits
2021
Mesoscopic integrated circuits aim for precise control over elementary quantum systems. However, as fidelities improve, the increasingly rare errors and component crosstalk pose a challenge for validating error models and quantifying accuracy of circuit performance. Here we propose and implement a circuit-level benchmark that models fidelity as a random walk of an error syndrome, detected by an accumulating probe. Additionally, contributions of correlated noise, induced environmentally or by memory, are revealed as limits of achievable fidelity by statistical consistency analysis of the full distribution of error counts. Applying this methodology to a high-fidelity implementation of on-dema…
ErrorSense: Characterizing WiFi Error Patterns for Detecting ZigBee Interference
2014
Recent years have witnessed the increasing adoption of heterogeneous wireless networks working in unlicensed ISM bands, thus creating serious problems of spectrum overcrowding. Although ZigBee, Bluetooth and WiFi networks have been natively designed for working in presence of interference, it has been observed that several performance impairments may occur because of heterogeneous sensitivity to detect or react to the presence of other technologies. In this paper we focus on the WiFi capability to detect interfering ZigBee links. Despite of the narrowband transmissions performed by ZigBee, in emerging scenarios ZigBee interference can have a significant impact on WiFi performance. Therefore…
Statistical classification and proportion estimation - an application to a macroinvertebrate image database
2010
We apply and compare a random Bayes forest classifier and three traditional classification methods to a dataset of complex benthic macroinvertebrate images of known taxonomical identity. Since in biomonitoring changes in benthic macroinvertebrate taxa proportions correspond to changes in water quality, their correct estimation is pivotal. As classification errors are passed on to the allocated proportions, we explore a correction method known as a confusion matrix correction. Classification methods were compared using the misclassification error and the χ2 distance measures of the true proportions to the allocated and to the corrected proportions. Using low misclassification error and small…
Super-orthogonal space-time trellis codes with differential phase modulation for noncoherent mobile communication systems
2010
In this paper, we show how to design super-orthogonal space-time trellis codes (SOSTTCs) using the differential binary phase-shift keying (PSK) modulation for noncoherent communication systems, for which the knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) at the receiver is not necessary. Moreover, a new decoding algorithm with reduced decoding complexity is proposed. In all simulations, a geometric two-ring channel model is employed to evaluate the performance of the SOSTTCs. The simulation results show that the proposed decoding algorithm has the same decoding performance compared with the traditional decoding strategy, while the new algorithm reduces significantly the overall computing …
Energy-Efficient Binary Power Control with Bit Error Rate Constraint in MIMO-OFDM Wireless Communication Systems
2012
Motivated by the demand for energy efficiency improvement in mobile communication industry, we explore an idea of optimizing energy efficiency for MIMO-OFDM wireless communication systems while maintaining users' quality of service (QoS) requirement. Based on the binary power control scheme,a power allocation criterion for energy efficiency optimization is derived under the total power constraint. From a bit error rate (BER) point of view, a protection constraint is configured to guarantee the system QoS. With the aim of energy efficiency optimization under QoS guarantee in MIMO-OFDM wireless communication systems, an energy-efficient binary power control with BER constraint (EBPCB) algorith…
Filecasting for streaming content delivery in IP datacast over DVB-H systems
2008
In this paper we investigate the potential gain that can be obtained in DVB-H by delivering streaming content as a succession of time-constrained flies using Application Layer - Forward Error Correction (AL-FEC) for improving the reception for mobile terminals. Compared to the conventional approach with link layer MPE-FEC, this technique allows to increase the robustness of the DVB-H transmission not only as a function of the capacity devoted for error repair (FEC overhead), but also as a function of the number of data bursts coded jointly ("file" or, source data block, size). The main drawback of this approach is an increase of the network latency proportional to the source block size, tha…
Application of the Error Correcting Grammatical Inference Method (ECGI) to Multi-Speaker Isolated Word Recognition
1988
It is well known that speech signals constitute highly structured objects which are composed of different kinds of subobjects such as words, phonemes, etc. This fact has motivated several researchers to propose different models which more or less explicitly assume the structural nature of speech. Notable examples of these models are Markov models /Bak 75/, /Jel 76/; the famous Harpy /Low 76/; Scriber and Lafs /Kla 80/; and many others works in which the convenience of some structural model of the speech objects considered is explicitly claimed /Gup 82/, /Lev 83/, /Cra 84/, /Sca 85/, /Kam 85/, /Sau 85/, /Rab 85/, /Kop 85/, /Sch 85/, /Der 86/, /Tan 86/.
Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Displays With Short Focal Distance: Conditions for Mitigating Parallax-Related Registration Error
2020
Optical see-through (OST) augmented reality head-mounted displays are quickly emerging as a key asset in several application fields but their ability to profitably assist high precision activities in the peripersonal space is still sub-optimal due to the calibration procedure required to properly model the user's viewpoint through the see-through display. In this work, we demonstrate the beneficial impact, on the parallax-related AR misregistration, of the use of optical see-through displays whose optical engines collimate the computer-generated image at a depth close to the fixation point of the user in the peripersonal space. To estimate the projection parameters of the OST display for a …
Ranking of occupational health and safety risks by a multi-criteria perspective: Inclusion of human factors and application of VIKOR
2021
Nowadays, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is more and more recognized as a crucial process to be properly managed and continuously improved by every organization. Primarily addressed to prevent workers’ injuries and diseases, it positively impacts on productivity, competitiveness and reputation as well as it con-tributes to cost savings in general. OHS management is grounded upon the risk assessment results, on the basis of which defining corrective measures to be taken to reduce risks to acceptable values. In this regard, the paper proposes a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) based methodology addressed to the occupational risks prioritization. In order to overcome the shortco…
