Skill Biased Technical Change and Misallocation: A Unified Framework

2019

Due to strict reliance on competitive labor markets, standard approaches which measure skill biased technical change (SBTC) conflate labor market distortions which prevent firms from choosing the efficient ratio between skilled and unskilled labor and `true' SBTC. This contrasts with recent evidence on decoupling between wages and productivity. To overcome this limitation, we present a unified framework to estimate SBTC which accounts for factor accumulation (FA) effects, and quantifies the discrepancy (i.e., relative misallocation) between the wage ratio (skilled to unskilled) and the marginal rate of technical substitution (MRTS). The suggested methodology takes advantage of recent develo…

Two-Sided Guaranteed Estimates of the Cost Functional for Optimal Control Problems with Elliptic State Equations

2014

In the paper, we discuss error estimation methods for optimal control problems with distributed control functions entering the right-hand side of the corresponding elliptic state equations. Our analysis is based on a posteriori error estimates of the functional type, which were derived in the last decade for many boundary value problems. They provide guaranteed two-sided bounds of approximation errors for any conforming approximation. If they are applied to approximate solutions of state equations, then we obtain new variational formulations of optimal control problems and guaranteed bounds of the cost functional. Moreover, for problems with linear state equations this procedure leads to gu…

Overview of Other Results and Open Problems

2014

This chapter presents an overview of results related to error control methods, which were not considered in previous chapters. In the first part, we discuss possible extensions of the theory exposed in Chaps. 3 and 4 to nonconforming approximations and certain classes of nonlinear problems. Also, we shortly discuss some results related to explicit evaluation of modeling errors. The remaining part of the chapter is devoted to a posteriori estimates of errors in iteration methods. Certainly, the overview is not complete. A posteriori error estimation methods are far from having been fully explored and this subject contains many unsolved problems and open questions, some of which we formulate …

Long term effect of teenage birth on earnings: Evidence from a British cohort study

2016

We use data from the 1970 British Cohort Study and evaluate the effect of teenage motherhood on hourly earnings at age 30, 34, 38, and 42 using alternative non-experimental estimation methods including linear regression, matching methods, and Heckman sample selection models. We conclude that teenage motherhood has a significant negative long-term effect on hourly wages. At age 42, teenage mothers earn 12% less than other women and 29% less than women who have not had any children. When compared to non-teenage mothers, the pay penalty reduces over time and becomes insignificant on the long term.

On Using “Stochastic Learning on the Line” to Design Novel Distance Estimation Methods for Three-Dimensional Environments

2019

We consider the unsolved problem of Distance Estimation (DE) when the inputs are the x and y coordinates (i.e., the latitudinal and longitudinal positions) of the points under consideration, and the elevation/altitudes of the points specified, for example, in terms of their z coordinates (3DDE). The aim of the problem is to yield an accurate value for the real (road) distance between the points specified by all the three coordinates of the cities in question (This is a typical problem encountered in a GISs and GPSs.). In our setting, the distance between any pair of cities is assumed to be computed by merely having access to the coordinates and known inter-city distances of a small subset o…

Functional ecology for evaluating and predicting the aptitude of permanent grassland to provide services

2013

National audience; Applying the principles of functional ecology helps better predict the services which can be provided by permanent grassland. Farming practices and environmental characteristics influence the functional composition of grassland. Functional plant types have a generic effect on forage services which can be assessed. 13 types of grassland composed of distinct functional types were defined based on 1,283 sample grassland fields located on 8 sites. This approach was validated by checking 8 Ellenberg indicator values (used to evaluate environmental characteristics and farming practices) against climatic data and descriptive data for farming practices. The interest of a function…

Observations of land use transformations during the Neolithic using exploratory spatial data analysis: contributions and limitations

2010

International audience; The settlement pattern analysis in archaeology implies some methodological questions. In this paper, we question some issues about the use of geostatistical methods for the observation of land use transformations during the Neolithic. We have developed two examples in Burgundy (France): the first one on a regional scale and the second one on a micro-regional scale. Using different ESDA approaches (Ripley’K function, Nearest Neighbour Distance, Kernel Density Estimation), we would like to underline what the methodological and archaeological contributions and their limits are. Both experiences point out that the results obtained depend not only on the analytical scale,…

Experimental and estimated saturated vapour pressures of aroma compounds

1999

Abstract The saturated vapour pressure of d-linalool, 2-nonanone, d-limonene and isoamyl acetate were measured using a static method at different temperatures from 223 to 468 K. From the experimental values, Antoine's constants were determined to enable the calculations of the saturated vapour pressures at a given temperature. The saturated vapour pressure of the four aroma compounds at 298 K were respectively 27, 59, 200 and 733 Pa. These results were compared with those obtained using different estimation methods (Antoine–Grain, Watson, Lee–Kesler, Gomez–Thodos, Grain and Mackay). Gomez–Thodos' model was found to be the most accurate method for the estimation of the saturated vapour press…

Projekty logistyki miasta – metoda szacunkowa oceny ryzyka

2017
