EXPERIENCES OF STRUCTURE ANALYSES OF CHLOROPHENOL DIMERS AND TRIMERS FOUND IN DIFFERENT SAMPLES

1982

ABSTRACT Chlorophenol formulations (Kymi/Kymmene Co., wood preservatives), sawmill wood waste samples and different waste treatment product samples were analyzed for oligomeric by-products of the polychlorinated phenols. Structure types for 26 phenolic dimers, 45 neutral dimers and 13 phenolic trimers were determined by GC/MS. Types of one tetrachloro and one hexachloro compound detected remained unknown. Contents of by-products in chlorophenol formulations varied greatly depending on their production method. Chemical treatment of wastes with NaClO and NaOH lowered their contents of chlorophenols and phenolic dimers, but did not change (NaOH) or increased (NaClO) the contents of neutral dim…

Liquid chromatography and characterization of ether-functionalized imidazolium ionic liquids on mixed-mode reversed-phase/cation exchange stationary …

2010

Abstract A new series [CnOmmim]Cl of imidazolium cation-based ionic liquids (ILs), with an ether functional group on the alkyl side-chain, has been prepared. The possibility of analyzing the ionic liquids by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was investigated on mixed-mode reversed/cation exchange stationary phase with the aqueous-acetonitrile mobile phase. Elution parameters, such as retention factor, selectivity and column efficiency, were studied as functions of mobile phase composition and pH. The ILs were characterized by elemental analysis, and infrared, UV and 1H, 13C NMR spectroscopy.

Microwave-assisted extraction of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polychlorinated naphthalenes concentrated on semipermeable membrane devices

2006

Abstract Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) has been evaluated as an alternative to dialysis for the extraction of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) sampled by semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs), using gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS–MS). For MAE optimization a two level full factorial design 2 3 , plus a centre point, which involves 11 randomized runs was used. The results showed that the temperature had a significant influence on the extraction of the nine PBDEs and four PCNs tested. Also, the solvent volume had a positive influence on the extraction of PBDEs and PCNs, but only in latter compounds, it achieves…

Liquid chromatography-Fourier transform infrared spectrometric determination of cholesterol in animal greases

1997

Abstract Stearic acid, cholesterol and cholesteryl palmitate have been separated in less than 14 min by liquid chromatography on a column (3.9 mm i.d.×150 mm) of Nova-Pack C 18 (5 μm) using chloroform–acetonitrile (45 : 55) as mobile phase pumped at 0.5 ml min −1 ; Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry was employed for both, general detection at 2868 or 2855 cm −1 and selective detection at 3285 cm −1 for stearic acid and 3526 cm −1 for cholesterol. In all cases a baseline established at 3900 cm −1 , 9-point smoothing and chromatographic peak height measurements were used. The method has been validated by application to the determination of cholesterol in animal greases and fish oi…

Separation and identification of piperine and chavicine in black pepper by TLC and GC-MS

2006

Conventional extraction of piperine and its derivatives by stirring the black pepper powder with solvents (ethyl alcohol, chloroform, petroleum ether, diethyl ether, etc.) for 16 to 24 h, or in a Soxhlet device for 16 h, can be replaced by extraction with supercritical fluids (CO 2 , CO + ethanol mixtures) [5, 6], or can be aided by use of microwave irradiation [7]. Separation and identification of the compounds present in pepper (essential oils, alkaloids, etc.) has been achieved by gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry [8] and by thin-layer chromatography [9, 10]. Determination of Phenols from Automobile Exhaust by Means of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

1981

Abstract The paper describes a procedure to determine ten representative phenols (phenol, m-, p-, o-cresol, 2,4-, 2,6-, 3,4-, 3,5-xylenol, 2,3,6-, 2,4,6-trimethylphenol) in engine exhaust. Sampling was performed by a conventional Grimmer device. A sample of the water condensate collected was extracted with ether. After concentration of the ether extract phenols were isolated from other interfering compounds by stepwise elution on a Lobar column packed with LiChroprep Si 60 under controlled conditions. Relative recovery of the majority of reference phenols ranged from 90-100%. Separation of phenols into individual components was performed on polar packings as well as on Reverse Phase packing…

Role of solvent and base in the silanization reaction of silicas for reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography

1984

Reversed-phase packings were synthesized by reaction of n-alkyldimethylchloro- and trifluoroacetoxysilanes with silicas of 15 and 25 nm pore size, employing tetrahydrofuran, N,N-dimethylformamide, benzene, diethyl ether, dichloromethane and acetonitrile as solvents and triethylamine, pyridine, triazole, quinuclidine, 2,4- and 2,6-lutidine and imidazole as bases. With dichloromethane as solvent and 2,6- lutidine as base, n-alkyldimethyltrifluoroacetoxysilanes did not yield n-alkyl ligand densities higher than those obtained with n-alkyldimethylchlorosilanes under identical conditions. With a given base and given n-alkyldimethylchlorosilane the solvent type was found to exert a noticeable inf…

Thin-layer chromatography of chlorinated anisoles and veratroles

1989

The thin-layer chromatography of chlorinated anisoles (methoxybenzenes) and veratroles (1,2-dimethoxybenzenes) has been examined on silica gel G60 and RP-18 thin-layer plates. More than fifty solvent systems were screened and some of them recommended for particular separations. Acetone was shown to be suitable for group separation of both chlorinated anisoles and veratroles on a silica gel G60 stationary phase having a very narrow range of RF values. On the other hand, benzene, dichloromethane and the various mixtures of light petroleum (b.p. 40–60°C) and a more polar eluent (such as diethyl ether, acetone or ethyl acetate) were recommended for separation of certain individual isomers. The …

Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase induction potency of polychlorinated diphenyl ethers in H4IIE rat hepatoma cells

1996

Polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDEs) are structurally similar to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and some PCDE congeners have been reported to cause toxic responses similar to those caused by some of the non-ortho-substituted PCBs, which are mediated by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Twenty-nine PCDEs were tested for their potency as AhR agonists relative to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) by measuring their ability to induce the cytochrome P-450 1A1-associated enzyme activity, ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD), in the H4IIE rat hepatoma cell bioassay. All PCDE congeners tested were found to be inactive as EROD inducers except for PCDE 156, which was a weak E…
