Ethical consumerism: a view from Finland

2004

Business ethics and corporate social responsibility have gained more attention in recent years. However, the consumers’ perspective on ethics is still a little researched area. This study reports a survey ( n = 713) on the views of Finnish consumers about ethics in trade. Consumers’ willingness to promote business ethics as well as the obstacles to ethical consumption are investigated. The results of the study show that while the majority of the respondents regard business ethics as important, this attitude does not translate into their choice behaviour. Consumers are uncertain about which products and firms follow ethical rules and which do not. The most important obstacles to ethical cons…

Conflicting values of ethical consumption in diverse worlds - A cultural Approach

2013

This paper examines the plurality of ethical consumption and aims to illustrate how consumers cope with its complexity in the context of everyday food consumption. This study seeks to outline the tensions that consumers inevitably face when pursuing ethical choices and to shed light on the various ways in which they solve these tensions in the rhythms of everyday life. The research applies Boltanski and Thévenot's theory of orders of worth as an interpretive framework. The research data has been collected from Finnish online discussion forums in which consumers debate various aspects of ethical food consumption. The analysis indicates that the participants in the discussions recognize vario…

Poglądy gospodarcze Marcina Lutra

2018

The 500th anniversary of the Reformation gave a perfect opportunity to remind and reflect on the most important issues of its father, Martin Luther. Although the socio- -economic problems were not the main ideas of his teaching, the Reformer from Wittenberg quite frequently raised questions which concerned the following topics: property and wealth, fair price and usury, professional work and vocation. Obviously Martin Luther did not create any specific and coherent system of economic ethics, but his socio-ethical reflections remain until today an important basis for contemporary Evangelical business ethics characterized, among others, by: individualism, creativity, familiarity, patriotism, …

Aidòs. Percorsi di etica del limite

2022

More planet and less profit? The ethical dilemma of an oil producing nation

2019

Every oil producing nation is confronted with a complex and fundamental ethical dilemma. On the one hand, there are moral arguments for the nation to use the petroleum resource for the benefit of society and make it available for countries who do not have this natural resource endowment. On the other hand, there are moral arguments for not extracting and using fossil fuels because of CO2 emissions. In short, this creates tension between the need for government revenues to finance welfare benefits and the objective of preserving the environment. A complicating factor is that a nation's domestic oil and gas activities are in its nature global because the activities have a direct impact on the…
