Antônio Etíope e Benedito, o mouro: o escravinho Santo e o preto eremita
2009
This article discusses the process of canonization of two African slaves, Benedict and Anthony, who were taken to Sicily through a combination of privacy wars, the slave trade and conflicts between Christian states and the Ottoman Empire in the context of modern-era Mediterranean. Along with other "servants of God" with exemplary lives, they both joined the Franciscan Order and were elevated to the altar after their deaths, while enslaved Christians in African territory "took the turban" with some even became local Muslim authorities. Sicily, a Spanish vice-kingdom near the northern African coast, was a cultural crossroad and for at the same time a privileged laboratory for the activity of …
Exploring Teachers' Motivation for Teaching and Professional Development in Ethiopia : Voices from the Field
2015
Teachers’ work, learning, and professional development are central to any effort aiming at improving schools. Consequently, teachers must consider themselves as a lifelong learner, engage in continuous professional learning and apply that learning to improve student learning and achievement. This article explores teachers’ motivation for teaching and professional development in secondary schools in Ethiopia. Data were collected via interviews and focus group discussions from 32 teachers. The analysis of the collected information revealed low salary and the absence of link between performance and reward as major motivational challenges for teachers. The identified motivational challenges wer…
The empowerment of young girls and women through sport and physical activity participation : a case study in Ethiopia
2017
As a consequence of gender-role socialization, women across the world are still facing unfair perceptions and treatments. Being empowered at the individual level would serve as a platform from which women could combat the existing inequality treatment and perception to gain full control over their lives. Sport and physical activities could serve as a platform for women to gain control. The aim of this research is to explore the potential that sport and physical activity (PA) have in the empowerment of young girls and women in Ethiopia. Additional questions were used in order to further explore any disempowerment experiences as a result of sport and physical activity participation, barriers …

A Contested Internal Frontier: The Politics of Internal and International Borders in North-Western Ethiopia
2020
This article analyses the historicity of the process of state building at Ethiopia’s north-western corner. The contemporary conflict for control of western Tigray is the by-product of a long-standing struggle for control of natural resources and trading flows between sub-regional centres of power that played a prominent role in the political arena of the Horn of Africa since the late nineteenth century. In turn, the outcome of this competition is critical to understand the making of Ethiopia’s foreign policy toward its neighbours since the second half of the twentieth century.
Giuseppe Cocchiara, il fascismo e il razzismo
2021
Folkloristiikkaa Etiopiassa
2010
[Ensimmäinen kappale] Vietin joulu-tammikuun 2010 Etiopiassa Addis Abeban yliopiston kutsumana vierailevana professorina. Kutsun Addis Abebaan, etiopialai…
Climate Resilience Pathways of Rural Households. Evidence from Ethiopia
2018
This paper explores the resilience capacity of rural Ethiopian households after the drought shock occurred in 2011. The work develops an original empirical framework able to capture the policy and socio-economic determinants of households’ resilience capacity by making parametric statistical assumption on the resilience distribution. To this end, the analysis employs a two-wave representative panel dataset aligned with detailed weather records while controlling for a large set of household- and community-level characteristics. The analysis shows that the majority of these factors affects significantly resilience capacity only in the group of households affected by the drought shock, suggest…
