Ethnography and ancient history
2012
Romanticism is the starting point of modern scientific historiography in the field of Greek ethnography. Muller, steeped in the intellectual climate of his time, wrote of the “spiritual nature of a people,” in reference to the Dorians, and attempted an approach to the literary sources that in certain respects foreshadowed the positivist school. Keywords: cultural history; ethnicity; exploration; race and ethnicity
Come pensiamo noi antropologi? Per nugoli di polvere e brezze d’aria
2015
In front of my window, at home, I am dusting some books and, by doing it, I think of some possible ways to capture my stream of consciousness. What is my ambition? By connecting a simple and daily life action (dusting) to the general and pervading act of thinking, I try to do an anthropology of daily life and of thinking.
Interprofessional collaboration during an emergency ward’s rounds
2015
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore interprofessional collaboration during ward rounds on a Finnish emergency and infection ward from the viewpoint of three central professional groups: physicians, nurses and secretaries. The data comprise ten interviews with staff members and ten hours of observations. The data were analysed using qualitative thematic analysis. Developmental dynamics of achievement strategies, reading performance, and parental beliefs
2002
This study investigates the developmental dynamics between children's achievement strategies, reading performance, and parental beliefs, by using longitudinal data. The reading performances of 111 six- to seven-year-old children were tested four times during their first year of primary school. In the same time, the children's use of a task-avoidant versus a task-focused achievement strategy in the classroom context was rated by their teachers. Parents filled in questionnaires measuring their general beliefs about their children's school performance and their reading-specific beliefs at the beginning and at the end of the school year. The results showed thatparents' beliefs in their children…

With children in their lived place: children's action as research data
2012
Abstract This article discusses theory and methods of researching the everyday experiences of children in the city environment combined with the question of giving a voice to children. The article is organised into three parts. Part one provides a conceptual background, theorising the relational as well as intergenerational character of the concept of environment. The cultural-geographical theory and the concept of Thirdspace are used. Part two illustrates the theoretical and methodological themes with reference to my study with children. I explored the encounter between children and the urban environment. I applied ethnographic tours around a city block with children and the children's spo…
The early childhood care and development mission and the institutional circuit of evidence
2019
Early childhood care and development has increasingly become a part of the global development agenda. Fueled by a threefold rationale, rooted in development psychology, social economy, and human rights, the arguments for investing in early childhood care and development are virtually unassailable. However, this rationale is somehow at odds with insights developed within the sociology of childhood, emphasizing childhood as a social construction amendable to context and children’s own agency. Inspired by the methodological approach known as institutional ethnography, we explore how development aid workers respond to and enact the early childhood care and development mission. Building on inter…
