Evidence of a complex phylogeographic structure in the common dormouse, Muscardinus avellanarius (Rodentia: Gliridae)

Contact: amouton@ulg.ac.be; International audience; This is the first mitochondrial phylogeography of the common dormouse, Muscardinus avellanarius (Linnaeus, 1758), a hibernating rodent strictly protected in Europe (Habitat Directive, annex IV; Bern Convention, annex III). The 84 individuals of M. avellanarius, sampled throughout the distributional range of the species, have been sequenced at the mitochondrial DNA gene (cytochrome b, 704 base pairs). The results revealed two highly divergent lineages, with an ancient separation around 7.7 Mya and a genetic divergence of 7.7%. ABSTRACT Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans has been shown to produce a soluble cytotoxic factor(s) distinct from leukotoxin. We have identified in A. actinomycetemcomitans Y4 a cluster of genes encoding a cytolethal distending toxin (CDT). This new member of the CDT family is similar to the CDT produced by Haemophilus ducreyi . The CDT from A. actinomycetemcomitans was produced in Escherichia coli and was able to induce cell distension, growth arrest in G 2 /M phase, nucleus swelling, and chromatin fragmentation in HeLa cells. The three proteins, CDTA, -B and -C, encoded by the cdt locus were all required for toxin activity. Antiserum raised against recombinant CDTC completely inhibited …
Chimerism and genetic diversity within the cultivar group of pinots

Three clones of Vitis vinifera cv. pinot gris were analysed at 50 microsatellite loci to assess the presence of intra-varietal genetic variability. Two clones revealed a polymorphism expressed by the presence of three alleles at 5 loci instead of the two expected for a diploid species. By sequencing the three alleles amplified at two loci, we confirm that they correspond to different allelic states of the same locus but differ in their number of repeat units. Such tri-allelic profiles could reveal periclinal chimeras in which the two cell layers of the apical meristem are genetically different. Cloning of Rac and Rho-GDI from tobacco using an heterologous two-hybrid screen.

International audience; To examine whether molecular similarities exist between the animal and plant Rho GTPase signaling pathways, we have developed a heterologous two-hybrid screening method. By this technique, we have cloned a cDNA encoding a tobacco Rac-like protein able to interact with a mammalian Rho-GDI. In a second screen this tobacco Rac was used as a bait and a tobacco homologue of Rho-GDI was identified. These results show that some components of the animal and plant Rac signaling pathways are similar enough to allow their interaction in an heterologous approach. Moreover these data suggest a similar regulation of Rho GTPases in animals and plants.

The variation in evaporative fraction and actual evaporation is examined for three sample days in the HAPEX-Sahel Intensive Observation Period (IOP), including data from all the vegetation types and sites. The trends in evaporative fraction over the IOP are also presented for eight sites. The high rate of evaporation from bare soil in the days following rainfall produces a variability in evaporation which makes differences between sites difficult to interpret on a day-to-day basis, but over the whole IOP it is shown that the millet uses a smaller proportion of the available energy for evaporation than the tiger bush or fallow savannah.
