Peer to Consumer Lending
2022
Peer to consumer lending represents an alternative form of financing characterized, within the crowdfunding genus, by the collecting of credit offers to be matched with borrowing demand through a digital platform. The essay focuses on legal analysis of some aspects of the structure and the functioning of lending marketplaces operating in the sector at stake. The Author argues how this business model – especially when the phenomenon involves consumers and, more generally, non-professionals counterparts – may be critical as regards to the classical cathegories and concepts ruling the lending/borrowing discourse.
Frequency-modulated atomic force microscopy operation by imaging at the frequency shift minimum: the dip-df mode.
2014
In frequency modulated non-contact atomic force microscopy, the change of the cantilever frequency (Delta f) is used as the input signal for the topography feedback loop. Around the Delta f(z) minimum, however, stable feedback operation is challenging using a standard proportional-integral-derivative (PID) feedback design due to the change of sign in the slope. When operated under liquid conditions, it is furthermore difficult to address the attractive interaction regime due to its often moderate peakedness. Additionally, the Delta f signal level changes severely with time in this environment due to drift of the cantilever frequency f(0) and, thus, requires constant adjustment. Here, we pre…
Online Black-Markets: An Investigation of a Digital Infrastructure in the Dark
2021
AbstractThis paper investigates the functioning of Online Black-Markets (OBMs), i.e. a digital infrastructure operating in the Dark Net that enables the exchange of illegal goods such as drugs, weapons and fake digital identities. OBMs exist notwithstanding adverse conditions such as police interventions, scams and market breakdowns. Relying on a longitudinal case study, we focus on the dynamics of interactions among actors and marketplace technologies and we identify three mechanisms explaining OBMs operations. In particular, we show that OBMs infrastructure is the result of commoditization, platformization and resilience processes. Our contribution relies on the identification of communit…
Setpoints compensation in industrial processes via multirate output feedback control
2013
This paper investigates the setpoints compensation for a class of complex industrial processes. Plants at the device layer are controlled by the local regulation controllers, and a multirate output feedback control approach for setpoint compensation is proposed such that the subsystems can reach the dynamically changed setpoints and the given economic objective can also be tracked via certain economic performance index (EPI). First, a sampled-data multivariable direct output feedback proportional integral (PI) controller is designed to regulate the performance of the subsystems. Second, the outputs and control inputs of the plants at the device layer are sampled at operation layer sampling …
Monitoring soft tissue coagulation by optical spectroscopy
2017
Laser tissue welding (LTW) or laser tissue soldering (LTS) is investigated since many years for treatment of incisions, wound closure and anastomosis of vessels [1, 2]. Depending on the process, a certain temperature in the range between 65 °C to 85 °C must be reached and held for a few seconds. Care has to be taken not to overheat the tissue, otherwise necrosis or tissue carbonization may occur and will impair wound healing. Usually the temperature is monitored during the process to control the laser power [3]. This requires either bulky equipment or expensive and fragile infrared fibers to feed the temperature signal to an infrared detector. Alternatively, changes in tissue morphology can…
The marketplace of ideas and its externalities: Who pays the cost of online fake news?
2023
Since the nineteenth century, thanks to J.S. Mill, an argument against limiting the freedom of expression has been gaining ground, namely that the truth of an argument is the result of free competition between different ideas in a “marketplace of ideas” and that this competition can yield an approximate form of the truth or a robust argument. In this paper I will argue that Mill’s model of the marketplace of ideas is an “idealised” model because it assumes that there is a subject who seeks to know in a detached manner, without being influenced by his or her expectations, needs, ideologies, or biases. However, the metaphor of the marketplace of ideas is still relevant because it also harbour…
eNOS Activation by HDL Is Impaired in Genetic CETP Deficiency.
2014
Mutations in the CETP gene resulting in defective CETP activity have been shown to cause remarkable elevations of plasma HDL-C levels, with the accumulation in plasma of large, buoyant HDL particles enriched in apolipoprotein E. Genetic CETP deficiency thus represents a unique tool to evaluate how structural alterations of HDL impact on HDL atheroprotective functions. Aim of the present study was to assess the ability of HDL obtained from CETP-deficient subjects to protect endothelial cells from the development of endothelial dysfunction. HDL isolated from one homozygous and seven heterozygous carriers of CETP null mutations were evaluated for their ability to down-regulate cytokine-induced…
VASCULOPROTECTIVE FUNCTION OF HDL FROM CETP-DEFICIENT SUBJECTS
2011
Objective. Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is a plasma glycoprotein that catalyses the transfer of cholesteryl esters from HDL to the other plasma lipoproteins. Genetic deficiency of CETP is one of the known causes of primary hyperalphalipoproteinemia and represents a unique tool to evaluate how structural HDL alterations impact on HDL atheroprotective activity. Aim of the present study was to assess the vasculoprotective activity of HDL isolated from carriers of genetic CETP deficiency. Subjects and Methods. HDL and HDL subfractions were isolated from carriers of the R37X, Q165X and IVS7+1 CETP mutations. HDL and HDL subfractions from carriers were tested for their protein/lipid …
