Ensuring Diverse User Experiences and Accessibility While Developing the TeSLA e-Assessment System
2019
The TeSLA project, with its new, innovative approaches for e-assessment, offers a great possibility for increasing the educational equality and making higher education studies available for all. It has been estimated that 10–15% of students in higher education institutions have some disabilities or special educational needs. At online universities or in online programmes, the number is even higher. These numbers emphasise the importance of the universal design for learning as a leading principle while developing the digital learning environments and e-assessment procedures. In this chapter, we describe the key elements of ensuring the accessibility of the TeSLA e-assessment system during th…
The Patras blended strategy model for deep and meaningful learning in quality life-long distance education
2019
Life‑long learning is currently being embraced as a central process that could disrupt traditional educational paths. Apparently, the (ideal) type of learning often promoted is deep and meaningful learning, though it is not always required to be so. Deep learning goes beyond superficial knowledge assimilation of unlinked facts; it aims at developing deep disciplinary understanding, transformative knowledge, personal meaning, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, creativity and metacognitive skills. Meaningful learning occurs when learning is active, constructive, intentional, authentic, and cooperative. Technology enhanced teaching and learning methods should prove their potential to t…

Digital media in blended coaching : interaction and distance presence in adult education
2011
In this study were studied the dimensions and advantages of the digital media in the adult education and distance presence. The point of view and limiting of the study was coaching and the significance of face-to-face interaction in it. The study was partly based on my three earlier reports about the digital media in the direction of teaching training. Main question of the three reports was would the digital media supply some new dimensions and benefits for teaching training guidance? It was seen, in the reports, as the biggest disadvantage that the distance presence is not a genuine situation because there is lack of (quick) interactivity. The need for a flexible two-way communication chan…
Using recorded audio feedback in multi-cultural higher e-education : How do academics experience? A thematic network analysis
2020
The aim of our study is to shed light on how academics experience using recorded audio feedback (RAF) as a feedback method in multi-cultural higher e-Education context. We adopted a qualitative content analysis approach, applying thematic network analysis to the data received from three academics (a case study). This approach proposes graphical networks as an aid for analyzing and synthesizing qualitative data into basic, organizing and global themes. The thematic network analysis produced two global, six organizing and 48 basic themes. The two global themes were named “Speaking style” and “Culture neutrality/sensitivity”. Based on our analysis, academics can, by using RAF in multi-cultural…
Yliopisto-opiskelijoiden näkemyksiä etäopetuksen pienryhmätilanteista
2023
Aineisto analysoitiin laadullisella …

Raising Awareness of Students’ Self-Directed Learning Readiness (SDLR)
2021
This paper describes the mapping of self-directed learning readiness (SDLR) for adult students applying for a master’s degree program delivered entirely as distanced learning. Since SDLR is strongly linked to both adult learning and online education, developing of self-directed learning (SDL) skills should be taken into consideration in our degree program. Making future students aware of SDLR is the first stage in introducing self-directed learning methods and practices in learning environments. The easiest way to do this is to have students answer an SDLR self-assessment questionnaire and give them feedback regarding their SDLR level. This paper presents how this is realized and provides t…
Self-directed Learning in Distance Education
2022
This full research paper studies the significance of self-directed learning (SDL) in distance education. A literature review revealed many characteristics related to SDL that are important to success in distance education. The self-directed learning readiness (SDLR) levels of 124 students were gathered for this research, and the results were compared between contact and distance learners. The effect of gender on SDLR and the relationship between SDLR and preference for distance education were examined. There was no statistical difference in SDLR levels between women and men but indicators of self-directed learners’ preferences for distance learning were found. In addition, the SDLR scale sc…
Review of the 10 Most Challengings Aspects of Making Hybrid Education Efficient and Enjoyable for Learners
2022
Our goal was to describe the 10 most challenging aspects that need to be considered when making hybrid education efficient and enjoyable for children. In this context, by hybrid education we refer to both emergency online education that took place in the COVID-19 outbreak in spring 2020 and to various forms of providing education combining online and onsite environments during the pandemic years. nonPeerReviewed
