Security Threats in ZigBee-Enabled Systems: Vulnerability Evaluation, Practical Experiments, Countermeasures, and Lessons Learned

2013

In this paper, two practical attacks against ZigBee security are proposed and the latter one is also carried out in our laboratory environment. The attack scenarios are based on utilizing several vulnerabilities found from the main security components of ZigBee technology. The first attack is based on sabotaging the ZigBee End-Device by sending a special signal that makes it wake-up constantly until the battery runs out. The second attack is based on exploiting the key exchange process in ZigBee when using the Standard Security level defined by the ZigBee specification: we also demonstrate with experimental figures that attacks against ZigBee-enabled devices become practical by using our at…

The rationale for and practice of EIA follow-up: an analysis of Finnish road projects

2015

Follow-up is often considered to be a weak or even missing element in environmental impact assessment (EIA). Though it is recognized that follow-up practices could provide useful opportunities to learn from projects’ actual consequences, the practice is criticized for not achieving this goal. In this paper, we aim to clarify the relationship between the theoretical rationale for EIA follow-up and the actual practices carried out in a Finnish EIA context. An empirical analysis was performed with follow-up documents. The findings indicate that follow-ups focused on dealing with environmental impacts related to the physical environment, e.g., flora, fauna, and ground and surface waters. Social…

Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma on Gingiva, Edentulous Ridge, and Retromolar Pad: A Case Series

2021

(1) Background: Gingival cancer has a significant incidence and is often diagnosed at advanced stages. The aim of this paper is to highlight its clinical aspects on the basis of a case series analysis in order to promote awareness and improve the diagnosis process. (2) Methods: Oral cancers diagnosed and treated at three Italian University Hospitals over ten years were retrospectively investigated. Cancer location on the gingiva, edentulous ridge, and retromolar pad was addressed. Data regarding clinical features, stage at the diagnosis, and time from presenting symptoms to first medical consultation were retrieved. (3) Results: Thirty-three cancers located on the gingiva, edentulous ridge,…

IS evolution benefit assessment: Challenges with economic investment criteria

2007

Maintenance and system evolution activities have a significant role in the information system (IS) life cycle. It has been estimated that approximately 80% of the total IT expenses are allocated for maintenance activities [20]. According to Lehman’s first law, maintenance is necessary, because software needs to be continuously improved or it will get out of date and cannot respond to the requirements of its environment [19]. Despite the importance of IS evolution investments, there is a gap between the IT related costs and company profitability [27]. Brynjolfssen [10] described this as a productivity paradox: information technology utilization has increased since the 70’s but simultaneously…

Trust and mistrust when students read multiple information sources about climate change

2011

Abstract The present study investigated how undergraduates judged the trustworthiness of different information sources that they read about climate change. Results showed that participants ( N  = 128) judged information from textbook and official documents to be more trustworthy than information from newspapers and a commercial agent. Moreover, participants put most emphasis on content and least emphasis on date of publication when judging document trustworthiness. When judging the trustworthiness of the textbook, they emphasized criteria differently than when evaluating other types of documents. Results also indicated that readers low in topic knowledge were more likely to trust less trust…

Evaluation des simulations spatiales

2006

The general topic is the evaluation of prospective scenarios for urban planning, especially for the management of urban built up areas. Several models of land-use and land-cover change (LUCC), based on different assumptions, allow producing realistic simulations of urban growth. Three ways can be distinguished for measuring the quality of modelings: 1. The choice of a model and its calibration; 2. The validation (showing if results are realistic); 3. The evaluation (showing if results respect defined planning goals). Measurement methods must be associated to these three steps.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of antimalarial and antileukemic activity of new C-10 modified artemisinin derivatives

2021

Abstract Several non-acetal artemisinin derivatives were synthesized and their antimalarial activity against chloroquine-resistant parasites as well as their antileukemic activity were investigated. The azide 10 was proved to have slightly better activity than the current antimalarial drugs such as artesunate and chloroquine. In addition, the azide 10 and the aldehyde 7 were found to be effective in decreasing cell proliferation in leukemia cells.
