Anticoagulation with Factor Xa Inhibitors Is Associated with Improved Overall Response and Progression-Free Survival in Patients with Metastatic Mali…

2021

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) significantly improved the prognosis of advanced melanoma patients. However, many patients do not derive long-term benefit from ICI therapy due to primary and acquired resistance. In this regard, it has been shown that coagulation factors contribute to cancer immune evasion and might therefore promote resistance to ICI. In particular, recent observations in murine systems demonstrated that myeloid-derived factor Xa (FXa) impedes anti-tumor immunity in the tumor microenvironment and that the oral FXa inhibitor (FXa-i) rivaroxaban synergizes with ICI. The synergistic effect of FXa inhibitors with clinical ICI therapy is unknown. We performed a retrospective …

State-of-the-Art Review : Chemotherapy and Thrombosis in Gynecologic Malignancy

1999

Thromboembolism is a severe and frequent problem in gynecologic malignancy. The average DVT incidence during chemotherapy of 5% might represent the lower range of incidence because < 55% of thrombotic complication manifest clinical signs. However, it seems likely that in addition to chemotherapy other risk factors such as menopausal status, BMI of patients, or type of preceding surgery must coincide before thrombosis manifests. While monitoring of patients using sophisticated coagulation tests did not identify patients' risk for DVT during chemotherapy, an evaluation of the coagulation status before initiating chemotherapy is recommended. Patients with a venous access device (e.g., indwelli…

Does chemotherapy prevent HCV-related hepatocellular carcinoma? Cons.

2010

The accuracy and the reliability of well-recognized clinical, virologic, histologic, and molecular risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are still insufficient. Thus, accurate risk prediction of cancer development in individual patients with the aim of selecting high risk cohorts of patients for HCC chemoprevention programs remains an elusive goal. Future directions in chemoprevention of HCC will be in the development of molecular risk models and of new chemopreventive agents. Studies examining multiple genes and proteins (genomics and proteomics) in the same HCCs will be required to evaluate this possibility thoroughly. A strategy aiming at preventing chronic liver disease of any…

Evaluation of Treatment Integrity: The Treatment Specificity Index

2015

Objective To differentiate between treatments in a randomized controlled trial (RCT), therapies need to display not only high purity but also high specificity. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the benefits of calculating a treatment specificity index for the evaluation of treatment differentiation. Method Based on an RCT of relapse prevention in depression, comparing a cognitive with a psychoeducational treatment, the specificity and the purity index were calculated. Results As indicated by the specificity index, both conditions differed in their levels of implemented specific and common interventions. A significant relationship was found between symptom change before a therapy sess…

An Ordinal Joint Model for Breast Cancer

2017

We propose a Bayesian joint model to analyze the association between longitudinal measurements of an ordinal marker and time to a relevant event. The longitudinal process is defined in terms of a proportional-odds cumulative logit model and the time-to-event process through a left-truncated Cox proportional hazards model with information of the longitudinal marker and baseline covariates. Both longitudinal and survival processes are connected by a common vector of random effects.

Therapeutic patient education in oncology: pedagogical notions for women's health and prevention.

2007

Therapeutic patient education has been defined by the World Health Organization as a comprehensive approach to support patients and their families to better understanding of their diseases. In oncology, the contribution of therapeutic education may enable the patients to have adequate information of the illness, to actively participate in the management of the disease, to understand how to live with the illness, to learn how to face the critical moments of the clinical course, and to live in harmony with all health professionals. In addition, there may be several advantages for health professionals: a reduction in emotional labour, increased professional satisfaction, and a reduction in the…

0112: Major improvement in one-year mortality in elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction in relation with early PCI and recommended medicat…

2016

Background and aimOutcomes of AMI patients have substantially improved over the past 2 decades. Whether similar trends are observed in elderly (≥75 years of age) and younger patients has not been extensively studied.MethodsWe analysed one-year mortality of elderly vs younger patients in 4 nationwide French survey carried out 5 years apart from 1995 to 2010. Consecutive STEMI and NSTEMI patients (≤48 hours from onset) were recruited over one-month periods. Among 10610 patients included in the 4 surveys, 3389 (32%) were aged 75+.ResultsFrom 1995 to 2010, the proportion of 75+remained stable in NSTEMI (1995: 36%, 2010: 38%), but decreased in STEMI patients (1995: 30%, 2010: 25.5%, P=0.006). The BaBar detector: Upgrades, operation and performance

2013

The BABAR detector operated successfully at the PEP-Il asymmetric e(+) e(-) collider at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory from 1999 to 2008. This report covers upgrades, operation, and performance of the collider and the detector systems, as well as the trigger, online and offline computing, and aspects of event reconstruction since the beginning of data taking.

Pricing Policies of Excess Capacity in Make to Order Production Systems

2014

The research concerns a make to order manufacturing environment and two classes of customers who submit orders. The core customers have a contract with the firm at fixed services level (price and due date). The short-term customers submit the orders based on the price set by the firm. In this paper, it is proposed a pricing policy based on fuzzy logic to set the price for the short-term customers. The fuzzy approach captures the state of the manufacturing systems in terms of congestion in order to set the price. The policy proposed is compared to a fixed price, and to a state-dependent policy based on three levels of price. A discrete event simulation environment is used to test the propose…
