CT exposure in adult and paediatric patients: a review of the mechanisms of damage, relative dose and consequent possible risks.

2014

An increase has been observed not only in the absolute number of CT examinations but also in the length of coverage and number of scanning phases, with the result that exposure to ionising radiation from CT is becoming an increasingly serious problem. The extent of the problem is not entirely known and cannot be adequately addressed without proper knowledge of all the phases that leads to the effective dose calculation. In light of the growing awareness of the issue of ionising radiation dose and the possible risk for the individual and the population, there is a need for radiologists, medical physicists and radiographers to play an active role in dose management. In this review, the author…

Pharmacological interventions for somatoform disorders in adults

2014

BACKGROUND: Somatoform disorders are characterised by chronic, medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS). Although different medications are part of treatment routines for people with somatoform disorders in clinics and private practices, there exists no systematic review or meta-analysis on the efficacy and tolerability of these medications. We aimed to synthesise to improve optimal treatment decisions.OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of pharmacological interventions for somatoform disorders (specifically somatisation disorder, undifferentiated somatoform disorder, somatoform autonomic dysfunction, and pain disorder) in adults.SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Depression, Anxi…

Evidence-Based Practice Needs Stronger Prognostic Scores for the Prediction of Recurrent Stroke

2010

To the Editor: The article by Weimer et al1 is of great interest for internists and neurologists that have to prognostically stratify patients with acute or subacute cerebrovascular disease based on risk scores. However, we have to comprehend the actual and pragmatic value of the study findings for clinical practice. We previously underscored the …

2019 revised algorithm for the management of knee osteoarthritis: the Southeast Asian viewpoint

2021

Abstract Background Since 2014, the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO) algorithm for the management of knee osteoarthritis (OA) is available worldwide. Aim Based on this document, a Southeast Asia Working Group (SEAWG) wished to see how the new ESCEO algorithm developed in 2019 was perceived by Southeast Asian experts and how it was integrated into their clinical practice. Methods A SEAWG was set up between members of the international ESCEO task force and a group of Southeast Asian experts. Results Non-pharmacological management should always be combined with pharmacological management. In step 1, symptoma…

Annoyance due to residential road traffic and aircraft noise: Empirical evidence from two European cities

2021

Based on a study in two European cities, Mainz in Germany and Zurich in Switzerland, the article investigates both acoustical and non-acoustical factors affecting indoor annoyance due to residential road traffic and aircraft noise. We specifically focus on three factors: (1) the role of windows as a feature of the building where people live; (2) the role of individual environmental concern as a general attitude; and (3) the role of household income as an indicator of socioeconomic resources. Empirical results show that closed windows in general and closed high-quality windows in particular are an important barrier against outdoor road traffic and aircraft noise, as well as a helpful subject…

Analisi comparativaSettore SECS-P/07 - Economia AziendaleAmministrazioni pubbliche territorialiCiclo di gestione della performanceThe literature has shown that the focus on performance management is shifting from collecting and reporting data to actually using them for decision making. The comparative case-study analysis presented in this article aims to identify the critical factors for adopting and implementing relevant performance management systems in regional governments. The evidence emerging from this casestudy analysis finds that certain variables are essential to advancing our progress in performance management including the role of legislation the need for leadership and the characteristics of performance indicators. The hope of this research is to encourage regional administrators to embrace leadership roles in interpreting and applying legal frameworks for realizing the benefits of performance management.

Typy kryminalistycznej analizy informacji

2022

Beyond the grave: variability in Neolithic diets in Southern Germany?

2006

Abstract Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses were undertaken on human and faunal remains from two Neolithic sites in Southern Germany; the LBK settlement at Herxheim and the middle Neolithic cemetery at Trebur. Stable isotope data were used to reconstruct the diets of individuals buried at these sites and to look at dietary variation between groups classified by their sex, age, grave goods and cultural affiliation. Overall there was surprisingly little variation in the diet between the groups, as described by the stable isotope analysis, despite significant differences in the composition of grave goods. Also surprising, considering the archaeological evidence for extensive grain cul…

Real-life assessment of chronic rhinosinusitis patients using mobile technology: the mySinusitisCoach project by EUFOREA

2020

Abstract Background Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with a substantial personal and socioeconomic burden. Monitoring of patient‐reported outcomes by mobile technology offers the possibility to better understand real‐life burden of CRS. Methods This study reports on the cross‐sectional evaluation of data of 626 users of mySinusitisCoach (mSC), a mobile application for CRS patients. Patient characteristics of mSC users were analysed as well as the level of disease control based on VAS global rhinosinusitis symptom score and adapted EPOS criteria. Results The mSC cohort represents a heterogeneous group of CRS patients with a diverse pattern of major sy…
