QUANTITATIVE CONVERGENCE RATES FOR SUBGEOMETRIC MARKOV CHAINS

2015

We provide explicit expressions for the constants involved in the characterisation of ergodicity of subgeometric Markov chains. The constants are determined in terms of those appearing in the assumed drift and one-step minorisation conditions. The results are fundamental for the study of some algorithms where uniform bounds for these constants are needed for a family of Markov kernels. Our results accommodate also some classes of inhomogeneous chains.

Editor's Choice – Follow-up of Patients After Revascularisation for Peripheral Arterial Diseases: A Consensus Document From the European Society of C…

2019

International audience; Peripheral arterial diseases comprise different clinical presentations, from cerebrovascular disease down to lower extremity artery disease, from subclinical to disabling symptoms and events. According to clinical presentation, the patient's general condition, anatomical location and extension of lesions, revascularisation may be needed in addition to best medical treatment. The 2017 European Society of Cardiology guidelines in collaboration with the European Society for Vascular Surgery have addressed the indications for revascularisation. While most cases are amenable to either endovascular or surgical revascularisation, maintaining long-term patency is often chall…

Proposer des révisions intersessions aux étudiants de 1ère année : quelles relations avec la réussite aux examens ?

2013

This paper assesses a revision programme proposed to unsuccessful students between the two examination sessions within the framework of the "Plan réussite en Licence" in first year at the University of Burgundy, both in terms of student participation and links with achievement. The low participation of students is not associated with particular student profiles. An analysis of the students' future shows that student participation in the revision programme led to a lower drop-out risk during the second examination session and greater success, but only as regards the examinations of the 2nd semester. It should also be noted that student participation also has positive effects in the mid-term …

Images and Preimages of Null Sets

2013

In this chapter we study conditions that guarantee that our mapping maps sets of measure zero to sets of measure zero. We start with the problem in general Sobolev spaces, after which we establish a better result for mappings of finite distortion. Then we introduce a natural class of counterexamples to statements of this type and finally we give a weak condition under which the preimage of a set of measure zero has measure zero for mappings of finite distortion.

A New Methodology to Construct a Database of World University Exams

2020

Since the final decades of the 20th century, university education has witnessed rapid growth. However, the quality of the education has varied a lot within the different programs around the world. How can we measure quality in university education? A number of institutions release annual global rankings of universities according to academic fields. One of the most respected lists, the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities, uses a complex methodology to rank world universities, including six objective indicators, i.e. the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of articles published in prestigious journals, the number of Highly Cited Researcher…

Double-Blind Study on the Effects of Steroids on Severe Closed Head Injury

1976

The results of a double-blind study on the effects of a low dose and a high dose of dexamethasone on severe closed head injury are presented. The steroid, particularly in high dose, reduced mortality, improved the neurologic course and the final outcome. Timing of steroid administration is of great importance.

Intraoperative dexamethasone intravitreal implant in diabetic macular edema patients undergoing phacoemulsification: The CataDex study

2021

Purpose To assess the impact of preoperative intravitreal dexamethasone implant (DexI) on functional and anatomic outcomes in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) who underwent phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Methods Prospective and non-comparative study conducted on consecutive DME patients undergoing cataract surgery. DexI was administered 15 days before surgery and in a pro re nata regime after surgery. Main outcome measures were mean change in central retinal thickness (CRT), central subfield thickness (CST), total macular volume (TMV), and central subfield volume (CSV) from baseline to month-12. Secondary outcome was mean change in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Resul…

Induction of Drug Transporters Alters Disposition of Risperidone - A Study in Mice

2010

Pharmacokinetic interactions, e.g. modulation of drug transporters like P-glycoprotein at the blood-brain barrier, can be a reason for treatment non-response. This study focuses on the influence of induction of drug transporters on the disposition of the antipsychotic drugs risperidone and 9-hydroxyrisperidone. Brain and serum concentrations of risperidone and its active metabolite 9-hydroxyrisperidone, which are known P-glycoprotein substrates, were measured after drug transporter induction with rifampicin, dexamethasone or 5-pregnene-3beta-ol-20-on-16alpha-carbonitrile using high performance liquid chromatography. Disposition of risperidone and 9-hydroxyrisperidone was dramatically decrea…

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Peripheral Arterial Vascular Disease

2016

Background In peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD), arterial stenosis or occlusion impairs perfusion in the territory of the distal portion of the aorta and the iliac and leg arteries. In Germany, the prevalence of PAOD rises with age, reaching 20% among persons over age 70. Methods This guideline was prepared by a collaboration of 22 medical specialty societies and two patient self-help organizations on the basis of pertinent publications that were retrieved by a systematic search in PubMed for articles that appeared from 2008 to April 2014, with a subsequent update to May 2015. Results 294 articles were assessed, including 34 systematic reviews and 98 randomized controlled trials …
