Das Analogieproblem in seiner Bedeutung für die Naturerkenntnis
1951
Neglect of the problem of analogy in the modern study of the natural sciences has been partly responsible for quite far-reaching misconceptions, as is seen particularly in the attempt to introduce conceptions of life and freedom into the inorganic sphere. A critical examination of these trends of thought shows that the apparently life-like behaviour of inorganic objects (atoms, molecules) and the apparent freedom of atomic happenings, are not ontic similarities (homologues) but analogies, that is similarities which are based on no true relationship in the nature of the phenomena. An exact differentiation is possible by the “Schichtenlehre”, which is also suitable for the treatment of those …
In vivo activity of pseudoguaianolide sesquiterpene lactones in acute and chronic inflammation.
2000
The pseudoguaianolide sesquiterpene lactones 4-alpha-O-acetyl-pseudoguaian-6beta-olide (1), hymenin (2), ambrosanolide (3), tetraneurin A (4), parthenin (5), hysterin (6) and confertdiolide (7) were evaluated for their ability to affect the inflammation responses induced by different agents. All the compounds showed activity against the 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-induced mouse ear edema. The ethyl phenylpropiolate (EPP)-induced mouse ear edema was inhibited by compounds 3, 5 and 7. However, when sesquiterpene-lactones were assayed on the arachidonic acid (AA)-induced mouse ear edema, none of them were active. The only sesquiterpene lactone orally active against the paw mouse…

Efficacy of three drugs for protecting against gentamicin-induced hair cell and hearing losses
2012
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Exposure to an ototoxic level of an aminoglycoside can result in hearing loss. In this we study investigated the otoprotective efficacy of dexamethasone (DXM), melatonin (MLT) and tacrolimus (TCR) in gentamicin (GM)-treated animals and cultures. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Wistar rats were divided into controls (treated with saline); exposed to GM only (GM); and three GM-exposed groups treated with either DXM, MLT or TCR. Auditory function and cochlear surface preparations were studied. In vitro studies of oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory cytokine mRNA levels, the MAPK pathway and caspase-3 activation were performed in organ of Corti explants from 3-day-old rats. KEY RESU…
Zum Einfluss von Angiotensin II auf die Nebennierenrinde unter chemischer adrenostase mit SU 4885 (Metopiron)
1964
The inhibition of 11-β-hydroxylase in the adrenal cortex with SU 4885 (metopiron) increases the ACTH-secretion. Val5-angiotensin II blocks the reaction of the anterior pituitary gland similarly as does dexamethasone. Mode and intensity of this action of angiotensin II, and the influence on rats treated as described, are studied.
The ‘Perfected System of Criticism’: Schopenhauer's Initial Disagreements with Kant
2012
AbstractI would like to know who of mycontemporaries should be more competent inKantian philosophy than me.(Schopenhauer in a letter to Rosenkranz and Schubert, 18371)In this paper the attempt is made to show how Schopenhauer's critique of Kant leads from initial disagreements to a fundamental modification, even a new formation, of the Kantian concepts of understanding, reason, imagination, perception, idea and thing-in-itself. The starting point and the core of his critique is the demand for the appreciation of intuitive knowledge which is apart from and independent of reason. The intuitive knowledge goes back to images and its highest form is aesthetic contemplation. Without a participati…
WHEN DEDUCTION LEADS TO BELIEF
1995
The paper questions the common assumption that rational individuals believe all propositions which they know to be logical consequences of their other beliefs: although we must acknowledge the truth of a proposition which is a deductive consequence of our beliefs, we may not genuinely believe it. This conclusion is defended by arguing that some familiar counterexamples to the claim that knowledge is justified true belief fail because they involve propositions which are not really believed. Beliefs guide conduct or issue in assertion by answering questions which arise in the course of deliberation and conversation, but the troublesome cases present propositions which do not present the agent…
Synchrotron-based Fourier transform spectra of the ν23 and ν24 IR bands of hexamethylenetetramine C6N4H12
2015
Abstract Hexamethylenetetramine (HMT), C6N4H12 is a spherical top with nine IR-active modes. Because of its relevance for astrophysics, we recorded the absorption spectra in the full range of its fundamental bands. In total, we detected eight fundamental bands and recently published the rotational analysis of the four most intense bands ( ν 19 , ν 20 , ν 21 , ν 22 ) located in the 1000–1500 cm−1 range as a support for astronomical searches (Pirali et al., 2014). While the CH stretch modes are unresolved broad features, in this article we report the analysis of the two remaining fundamental bands exhibiting rotationally resolved structures: ν 23 –GS and ν 24 –GS located at about 820 cm−1 and…
