Flow cytometric kinetic assay of the activity of Na+/H+ antiporter in mammalian cells.

Background The Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE) of mammalian cells is an integral membrane protein that extrudes H+ ion in exchange for extracellular Na+ and plays a crucial role in the regulation of intracellular pH (pHi). Thus, when pHi is lowered, NHE extrudes protons at a rate depending of pHi that can be expressed as pH units/s. Methods To abolish the activity of other cellular pH-restoring systems, cells were incubated in bicarbonate-free Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium buffered with HEPES. Evaluation of advanced silica packings for the separation of biopolymers by high-performance liquid chromatography

Abstract The linear solvent strength model of Snyder was applied to describe fast protein separations on 2.1-μm non-porous, silica-based strong anion exchangers. It was demonstrated on short columns packed with these anion exchangers that (i) a substantially higher resolution of proteins and nucleotides was obtained at gradient times of less than 5 min than on porous anion exchangers; (ii) the low external surface area of the non-porous anion exchanger is not a critical parameter in analytical separations and (iii) μg-amounts of enzymes of high purity and full biological activity were isolated.

Effect of perspiration on skin temperature measurements by infrared thermography and contact thermometry during aerobic cycling

[EN] The aim of the present study was to compare infrared thermography and thermal contact sensors for measuring skin temperature during cycling in a moderate environment. Fourteen cyclists performed a 45-mM cycling test at 50% of peak power output. Skin temperatures were simultaneously recorded by infrared thermography and thermal contact sensors before and immediately after cycling activity as well as after 10 min cooling-down, representing different skin wetness and blood perfusion states. Experimental and numerical investigation of heat transfer and fluid flow were conducted for classic heat exchanger elements (flat plate with fin-tubes in-line, staggered and with vortex generators) and corrugated-undulated ducts under transitional and weakly turbulent conditions. Innovative Compact Solar Air Conditioner based on Fixed and Cooled Adsorption Beds and Wet Heat Exchangers

Abstract In this work, a new all-in-one compact solar air conditioner concept is presented. The system is mainly based on a new DEC process which utilises fixed and cooled adsorption beds operating in a batch process and two wet heat exchangers. The proposed innovative adsorption bed is a fin and tube heat exchanger commonly used in the air conditioning sector, wherein the spaces between the fins are filled with silica gel grains. Abstract This work proposes a correlation for the specific capital cost of multi-effect distillation (MED) plants, considering their main design options and parameters, such as the number of effects, size/capacity, and heat source temperature. These parameters are varied within a large range to cover as many different cases as possible. The cost correlation decouples the evaporator cost and includes in the expression the ratio of the heat exchanger area to a reference one. Two relaxation times and thermal nonlinear waves along wires with lateral heat exchange

Abstract We propose a model for studying several nonlinear waves for heat transport along a cylindrical system with lateral non-linear heat transfer to the environment. We consider relaxational equations, each with its own relaxation time, for longitudinal heat transfer and for lateral heat transfer across the wall. We consider two kinds of nonlinear lateral heat transport: radiative heat transport, and flux-limited heat transport.
