Hands-On Math and Art Exhibition Promoting Science Attitudes and Educational Plans
2017
The current science, technology, engineering, art, math education (STEAM) approach emphasizes integration of abstract science and mathematical ideas for concrete solutions by art. The main aim was to find out how experience of learning mathematics differed between the contexts of school and an informal Math and Art Exhibition. The study participants (N=256) were 12-13 years old from Finland. Several valid questionnaires and tests were applied (e.g., SRQ-A, RAVEN) in pre- and postdesign showing a good reliability. The results based on General Linear Modeling and Structural Equation Path Modeling underline the motivational effects. The experience of the effectiveness of hands-on learning at s…
Exposer l’âge du Bronze
2021
Exhibitions about the Bronze Age in France are quire a recent affair and only eighteen temporary exhibitions, most with their own catalogue, have been curated since 1986. This conference has given us the opportunity to overviev, the exhibitions that have given eirher a regional perspective of the Bronze Age or have focused on a particular theme. ln the last few years, several exhibitions have highlighred non-funerary metal deposits. The museography and public ourreach have varied for each exhibition, but ail have dealt with the difficult question of recontextualisation and how we understand and interpret archaeological data. This is particularly relevant, as the public still knows lirrle o…

Pictorial meaning-making in a community project in Helsinki. Freirean interpretations of a dialogical process
2018
Participation in public discourse belongs to a democratic citizenship. However, part of the population is excluded from such communal discussion. This paper describes how the photography group Camera Obs., which principally contained unemployed people in Helsinki, created pictorial voices from their own everyday experiences through a dialogical process, rendering them also visible to other people. The research focuses on the group’s activity during the years 2004–6, from the beginning of the project to its first exhibition. As a theoretical background, Paulo Freire’s ideas of dialogue and voice creation, combined with Vygotsky’s and Mezirow’s concept of meaning-making, have been applied. T…
Simone Geraci. Echos
2019
The essay was made on the occasion of Simone Geraci's solo show at the Quam gallery in Scicli, where the artist presented a very refined selection of his most recent artistic production. Geraci, who prefers the definition of painter to that of artist, is firmly convinced of the condition of painting as a living language, not devoid of narrative implications, and as an expressive tool that is still current and capable of great fascination.

Animated Corpses: Communicating with Post Mortals in an Anatomical Exhibition
2006
‘Plastinates’ (i.e. corpses conserved through plastics) are lab created artifacts which since the nineties have been the subject of a cultural field experiment via an anatomical exhibition. Similarly to brain-dead or digitalized bodies, they constitute an ambiguous form of post-mortem existence. The article inquires after the ways in which the ontological status of these entities is constituted through the practices of body donors, anatomists and visitors. Plastinates owe their ambiguity to an oscillation between two different frames of perception. Their meaning is determined by the extent to which an anatomy exhibition can impose a ‘medical gaze’ over a non-professional way of perception, …
