A special body: Exposure ritual of a Bronze Age seated cadaver from the cemetery of Humanejos (Parla, Madrid, Spain)

2020

Abstract Seated positions are extraordinarily exceptional in prehistoric graves and despite the increasing number of new cases its social meaning remains uncertain. This paper presents a new finding of a Bronze Age seated burial discovered in the prehistoric cemetery of Humanejos (Parla). Such a unique burial is carefully analyzed in the context of the IInd millennium cal BC burial rituals. Firstly, the different phases of the inhumation were described through an archaeothanatological approach, which showed that the body was originally bound in a sitting position and then the upper part, which was exposed, naturally collapsed after the decomposition process. Furthermore, the biological feat…

Aesthetics of Nutrition, Ethics of Animality: the Packaging of Vegan and Vegetarian Products in the Italian Organised Distribution Market

2018

The topic of this paper concerns the packaging of vegan and vegetarian products in the Italian organised distribution market. Large-scale organised distribution and vegetarianism's choice of packaging is related to current dietary trends which, as is often the case with eating choices and habits, intertwine as they massively spread. Which are the visual and verbal strategies that are adopted to give meaning, in the Italian culinary landscape, to vegan and vegetarian foods sold through large-scale distribution? The aim is to outline, through the methodology of Semiotics, the sensorial mechanisms and cultural grids that shape this food universe, and the way it interacts with other categories …

Product Meaning, Affective Use Evaluation, and Transfer:

2005

The first part of this investigation explored the multidimensional nature of product meaning, referring to the variety of connotations and functions a consumer associates with a particular product category. The subsequent experiment examined the moderation effects of product meaning and other attributes of the user on (a) the affective evaluation of an obstructed use interaction, and (b) the transfer of emotion between devices presented as being either of the same or a different brand. Although the failure experience essentially caused frustration, this reaction varied substantially among consumers depending on product meaning, age, and gender. The results also showed that the emotion dimen…

Singular quasisymmetric mappings in dimensions two and greater

2018

For all $n \geq 2$, we construct a metric space $(X,d)$ and a quasisymmetric mapping $f\colon [0,1]^n \rightarrow X$ with the property that $f^{-1}$ is not absolutely continuous with respect to the Hausdorff $n$-measure on $X$. That is, there exists a Borel set $E \subset [0,1]^n$ with Lebesgue measure $|E|>0$ such that $f(E)$ has Hausdorff $n$-measure zero. The construction may be carried out so that $X$ has finite Hausdorff $n$-measure and $|E|$ is arbitrarily close to 1, or so that $|E| = 1$. This gives a negative answer to a question of Heinonen and Semmes.

T cell-independent joint destruction

1998

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic disorder of unknown etiology. Although, early and late stages of the disease may be driven by different processes, affected joints are characterized by inflammation, synovial hyperplasia, and abnormal immune responses [1]. The abundance of T cells within the rheumatoid synovium as well as the association of certain major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules with RA [2] implied a central role for T cells in the pathophysiology of the disease. However, recent advances in molecular biology have fostered new concepts for the pathogenesis of RA. Specifically, the investigation of early stages of disease, the development of novel anim…

Enfermedad y caída en Albert Camus

2016

DIONYSIAN BIOPOLITICS: KARL KERÉNYI’S CONCEPT OF INDESTRUCTIBLE LIFE

2014

Scholar of religion Karl Kerenyi's last book, Dionysos, is a grand attempt at reinterpreting ζωη (zoe), the Greek concept of indestructible life, which he distinguishes from βίος (bios), finite life. In Kerenyi's view, the meaning and sensual experience of zoe was expressed in its richest form in the Cretan beginnings of the cult of Dionysos. The major characteristics of this cult, as Kerenyi describes, were beyond the cultural, political, and sexual limits of the Christian interpretations of life and nature. Searching for modern analogies to zoe, Kerenyi explains the idea in relation to molecular biology's minimum definition of life. Despite the fact that Kerenyi's book contains only minor…

Psychosis, symbol, affectivity 2: another perspective on the treatment of psychotic disorder

2021

This is the second of two papers concerning our study into an integrated approach to psychotic disorders conducted at the University Psychiatry Unit of Palermo's Polyclinic over approximately 15 years; this paper concentrates on the clinical phenomena. The study aimed to find the best possible treatment and to improve the prognosis of this patient group. We have explored the efficacy of a range of psycho-therapeutic (cognitive-behavioural, systemic-relational, psychodynamic, group and others), psycho-pharmaceutical, psychiatric rehabilitative and psycho-educational treatments, with a hermeneutic approach instead of a systematic one. The study's conclusions, described in the paper, are that …
