Modelling by Statistic in Research of Mathematics Education
2008
Summary. The aim of this paper is to study the quantitative tools of the research in didactics. We want to investigate the theoretical-experimental relationships between factorial and implicative analysis. This chapter consists of three parts. The first one deals with the didactic research and some fundamental tools: the a priori analysis of a didactic situation, the collection of experimental data and the statistic analysis of data. The purpose of the second and the third section is to introduce the experimental comparison between the factorial and the implicative analysis in two researches in mathematics education.
Design Of Experiments for the optimization the process parameters of thixotropic aluminum alloy
2006
The success of the thixoforming process depends on the possibility to confer to material, when it is found in the semisolid state, a microstructure characterized by globular particles of solid phase surrounded by a continuous film of liquid phase; such microstructure is obtainable through particular thermo-mechanical treatments. In the present research, in order to optimize the influence of process parameters in the step in which the thixotropic properties are conferred to the AA7075 aluminum alloy, the statistic technique of the Design Of Experiments (DOE) has been used. The advantages in the application of such technique are expressible in terms of reduction the times of development of pr…
Comment on ?Measuring the flow resistance of submerged grass? by C. A. M. E. Wilson and M. S. Horritt,Hydrological Processes 16: 2589-2598
2005
In this short note, the experimental data of Wilson and Horritt (2002. Hydrological Processes16: 2589–2598), jointly with the measurements by Kouwen et al. (1969. Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Division, ASCE95: 329–342) and by Raffaelli et al. (2002 In Proceedings XXVIII Convegno di Idraulica e Costruzioni Idrauliche, Cosenza, Italy; 223–230), are firstly used to test Kouwen's approach. All experimental data are then used to calibrate a flow resistance equation that was theoretically deduced by dimensional analysis and self-similarity theory. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Independent friction-restitution modeling of two-disk collisions
2021
[EN] The oblique collisions between two axisymmetric disks moving on a flat horizontal surface are described in terms of impact modeling based on the assumption that normal and tangential restitution mechanisms operate independently of friction. Describing these mechanisms in terms of the usual Coulomb formulation, the model allows for an interpretation of some ¿anomalous¿ experimental data reported in the literature. These experimental data, corresponding to the variation of the coefficients of friction and tangential restitution with the impact angle, remained unexplained in classic formulations, are understood within the framework of the independent friction-restitution closure. Experime…
Context-Aware Visual Exploration of Molecular Datab
2006
Facilitating the visual exploration of scientific data has received increasing attention in the past decade or so. Especially in life science related application areas the amount of available data has grown at a breath taking pace. In this paper we describe an approach that allows for visual inspection of large collections of molecular compounds. In contrast to classical visualizations of such spaces we incorporate a specific focus of analysis, for example the outcome of a biological experiment such as high throughout screening results. The presented method uses this experimental data to select molecular fragments of the underlying molecules that have interesting properties and uses the res…
Visco-elastic behavior through fractional calculus: an easier method for best fitting experimental results
2011
In capturing visco-elastic behavior, experimental tests play a fundamental rule, since they allow to build up theoretical constitutive laws very useful for simulating their own behavior. The main challenge is representing the visco-elastic materials through simple models, in order to spread their use. However, the wide used models for capturing both relaxation and creep tests are combinations of simple models as Maxwell and/or Kelvin, that depend on several parameters for fitting both creep and relaxation tests. This paper, following Nutting and Gemant idea of fitting experimental data through a power law function, aims at stressing the validity of fractional model. In fact, as soon as rela…
Experimental and Numerical Study on the Flow Field and Friction Factor in a Pressurized Corrugated Pipe
2015
An experimental campaign including measurement of pressure drops and velocity profiles was conducted on the pressurized flow in a commercial corrugated pipe. The results show that the empirical graphs suggested by Morris in the fifties may produce inaccurate assessments of the friction factor, in particular, for low Reynolds numbers. The experimental data was then reproduced by means of a numerical model with the large eddy simulation (LES) technique. The friction factor behavior for low and relatively high Reynolds numbers was thus investigated. The numerical simulations were in good agreement with the experimental results, showing the LES suitability to predict the effect of the pipe wall…
Model to Assess the Quality of Magmatic Rocks for Reliable and Sustainable Constructions
2017
Geomechanical assessment of rocks requires knowledge of phenomena that occur under the influence of internal and external factors at a macroscopic or microscopic scale, when rocks are submitted to different actions. To elucidate the quantitative and qualitative geomechanical behavior of rocks, knowing their geological and physical–mechanical characteristics becomes an imperative. Mineralogical, petrographical and chemical analyses provided an opportunity to identify 15 types of igneous rocks (gabbro, diabases, granites, diorites, rhyolites, andesites, and basalts), divided into plutonic and volcanic rocks. In turn, these have been grouped into acidic, neutral (intermediate) and basic magmat…
Analysis of a full-scale integral test in PERSEO facility by using TRACE code
2017
Over the last decades a lot of experimental researches have been done to increase the reliability of passive decay heat removal systems implementing in-pool immersed heat exchanger. In this framework, a domestic research program on innovative safety systems was carried out leading the design and the development of the PERSEO facility at the SIET laboratories. The configuration of the system consists of an heat exchanger contained in a small pool which is connected both at the bottom and at the top to a large water reservoir pool. Within the frame of a national research program funded by the Italian minister of economic development, the DEIM department of the University of Palermo in coopera…
Firefly optimization used to identify hysteresis parameter on rotational MR-damper
2014
In his paper the physical properties and mathematical models of a semi-active magnetorheological (MR) damper is studied. The considered models are the Dahl model and Bouc-Wen model. The parameters for these models are found by using a firefly optimization algorithm that minimizes the difference between experimental and simulated data. The objective of his paper is to compare different mathematical MR-damper models with the experimental data. The simulation results illustrate he effectiveness of he proposed optimization algorithm.
