L'ESPLORAZIONE DEI LINFONODI REGIONALI NEL NEUROBLASTOMA LOCALIZZATO: Compliance alle Direttive Chirurgiche nello Studio Nazionale NB 85

1993

Accurate staging of patients with Neuroblastoma is essential for prognosis and for determining the most appropriate treatment. The neoplastic involvement of regional lymph-nodes (l.n.) is an important prognostic feature; the surgical exploration of these L.n. is mandatory for localized neuroblastoma (NBL) (stage I and II) in wich surgery represent the main treatment. The Authors have carried out a retrospective analysis of the cases registered in Italy between 1985 and 1989

Radiation Hardness Assurance Through System-Level Testing: Risk Acceptance, Facility Requirements, Test Methodology, and Data Exploitation

2021

International audience; Functional verification schemes at a level different from component-level testing are emerging as a cost-effective tool for those space systems for which the risk associated with a lower level of assurance can be accepted. Despite the promising potential, system-level radiation testing can be applied to the functional verification of systems under restricted intrinsic boundaries. Most of them are related to the use of hadrons as opposed to heavy ions. Hadrons are preferred for the irradiation of any bulky system, in general, because of their deeper penetration capabilities. General guidelines about the test preparation and procedure for a high-level radiation test ar…

Relationships Between Ethnic Identity, Ethnic Attitudes, and Acculturative Stress in Tunisian Individuals in Early and Middle Adolescence

2016

Framed from an integrative approach, the current article examined the associations between ethnic identity exploration (EIE), ethnic identity commitment (EIC), and acculturative stress by investigating the mediating role of ethnic attitudes (i.e., in-group favoritism and out-group derogation) in these relationships. Additionally, the moderating role of age was analyzed. A multiple-group path analysis was performed on data collected from 256 Tunisians in early and 248 in middle adolescence living in Italy, which is an interesting and understudied immigrant group characterized by similarities and differences with the host population. In younger adolescents, EIE and EIC were indirectly and po…

The space age and the origin of space research

2001

The exploration of space is one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century. In the ideal photo album of this century one could hardly avoid including such pictures as our blue planet seen from space and the human footprint on the Moon’s surface; the close-up images of a comet’s nucleus and the rough landscape of Mars; the floating of astronauts in the black vacuum around a space station and the rings of Saturn photographed from an approaching spacecraft.

The Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) Mission: From Spectral Measurements to High-Level Science Products

2021

The Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) mission was selected in 2015, by the European Space Agency (ESA), as an Earth Explorer mission, with a launch planned for 2024. The key scientific objective of the mission is the quantitative global mapping of actual photosynthetic activity of terrestrial ecosystems, as a function of variable vegetation health status and environmental stress conditions. The measurements will have a spatial resolution of 300 m, adequate to resolve land surface processes associated to vegetation dynamics at a global scale. To be able to accomplish such objective, the FLEX mission carries the FLORIS spectrometer, specially optimized to map vegetation fluorescence with a spectra…

Field-portable Mössbauer spectroscopy on Earth, the Moon, Mars, and beyond

2011

ABSTRACT Iron occurs naturally as Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , and, to a lesser extent, as Fe 0 . Many fundamental (bio)geochemical processes are based on redox cycling between these oxidation states. Mossbauer spectroscopy provides quantitative information about the distribution of Fe among its oxidation states, identification of Fe-bearing phases, and relative distribution of Fe among those phases. Portable, miniaturised Mossbauer spectrometers were developed for NASA9s Mars Exploration Rovers (in operation since 2004) and provide a means for non-destructive, in-situ field investigations. On Mars, these instruments provided evidence for aqueous activity with implications for habitability, were applied…

Finding near-perfect parameters for hardware and code optimizations with automatic multi-objective design space explorations

2012

Summary In the design process of computer systems or processor architectures, typically many different parameters are exposed to configure, tune, and optimize every component of a system. For evaluations and before production, it is desirable to know the best setting for all parameters. Processing speed is no longer the only objective that needs to be optimized; power consumption, area, and so on have become very important. Thus, the best configurations have to be found in respect to multiple objectives. In this article, we use a multi-objective design space exploration tool called Framework for Automatic Design Space Exploration (FADSE) to automatically find near-optimal configurations in …

Automatic multi-objective optimization of parameters for hardware and code optimizations

2011

Recent computer architectures can be configured in lots of different ways. To explore this huge design space, system simulators are typically used. As performance is no longer the only decisive factor but also e.g. power usage or the resource usage of the system it became very hard for designers to select optimal configurations. In this article we use a multi-objective design space exploration tool called FADSE to explore the vast design space of the Grid Alu Processor (GAP) and its post-link optimizer called GAPtimize. We improved FADSE with techniques to make it more robust against failures and to speed up evaluations through parallel processing. For the GAP, we present an approximation o…

Using neural networks to obtain indirect information about the state variables in an alcoholic fermentation process

2020

This work provides a manual design space exploration regarding the structure, type, and inputs of a multilayer neural network (NN) to obtain indirect information about the state variables in the alcoholic fermentation process. The main benefit of our application is to help experts reduce the time needed for making the relevant measurements and to increase the lifecycles of sensors in bioreactors. The novelty of this research is the flexibility of the developed application, the use of a great number of variables, and the comparative presentation of the results obtained with different NNs (feedback vs. feed-forward) and different learning algorithms (Back-Propagation vs. Levenberg&ndash

On Interacting with Collective Knowledge of Group Facilitation

2013

Group decision process design is a well-known class of ill-structured, dynamic, and going-concerns problem. The paper presents a human-computer interaction engineering approach to design a software prototype that provides personalized, contextual and actionable recommendations for this problem. The approach emphasizes the computational aspects of collective intelligence to structure these recommendations based on the collective knowledge that reflects not only the design space per se, but the collective experience in exploiting it as well. It is demonstrated by: 1) detailing the engineering issues of an implemented prototype for the group decision process design; and 2) explaining its funct…
