Strategies of Eliciting Young People’s Affective and Quick Participation in a Youth Magazine’s Instagram Community

2022

Traditional media have merged with social media and pursue to produce engaging content and form relationships with online audiences. At the same time, social media has allowed young people a venue to practice their basic needs of interaction, identity, and self-expression, and provides communities of shared issues and social/political aspirations. By analysing the Instagram post caption data of the largest Finnish (girls’) youth magazine, this case study investigated what posting strategies used by the magazine elicited youth participation, and how do the strategies and participation align with young people’s media and online communication preferences. The study found the magazine to use va…

Snapshot liver transcriptome in hepatocellular carcinoma

2012

Lately, advances in high throughput technologies in biomedical research have led to a dramatic increase in the accessibility of molecular insights at different levels of cancer biology such as genome, epigenome, transcriptome, proteome, and others. Among the diverse biological layers, the transcriptome has been most extensively studied especially due to the successful and broad introduction of the microarray technology. The future prospect of broad disposability of deep sequencing technology will furthermore lead to a more sensitive detection of lowly expressed transcripts and to an increase in the number of newly identified transcripts, but also to increase the discovery and characterizati…

Genomic architecture and sexually dimorphic expression underlying immunity in the red mason bee, Osmia bicornis

2021

AbstractInsect pollinators provide crucial ecosystem services yet face increasing environmental pressures. The challenges posed by novel and reemerging pathogens on bee health means we need to improve our understanding of the immune system, an important barrier to infections and disease. Despite its importance, for certain ecologically important species, such as solitary bees, our understanding of the genomic basis and molecular mechanisms underlying immune potential, and how intrinsic and extrinsic factors may influence immune gene expression is lacking. Here, to improve our understanding of the genomic architecture underlying immunity of a key solitary bee pollinator, we characterised put…

Boolean Functions with a Low Polynomial Degree and Quantum Query Algorithms

2005

The complexity of quantum query algorithms computing Boolean functions is strongly related to the degree of the algebraic polynomial representing this Boolean function. There are two related difficult open problems. First, Boolean functions are sought for which the complexity of exact quantum query algorithms is essentially less than the complexity of deterministic query algorithms for the same function. Second, Boolean functions are sought for which the degree of the representing polynomial is essentially less than the complexity of deterministic query algorithms. We present in this paper new techniques to solve the second problem.

Small-molecule affinity capture of DNA/RNA quadruplexes and their identification in vitro and in vivo through the G4RP protocol

2019

International audience; Guanine-rich DNA and RNA sequences can fold into higher-order structures known as G-quadruplexes (or G4-DNA and G4-RNA, respectively). The prevalence of the G4 landscapes in the human genome, transcriptome and ncRNAome (non-coding RNA), collectively known as G4ome, is strongly suggestive of biological relevance at multiple levels (gene expression , replication). Small-molecules can be used to track G4s in living cells for the functional characterization of G4s in both normal and disease-associated changes in cell biology. Here, we describe biotinylated biomimetic ligands referred to as Bio-TASQ and their use as molecular tools that allow for isolating G4s through aff…

Pain fingerprinting using multimodal sensing: pilot study

2021

Abstract Pain is a complex phenomenon, the experience of which varies widely across individuals. At worst, chronic pain can lead to anxiety and depression. Cost-effective strategies are urgently needed to improve the treatment of pain, and thus we propose a novel home-based pain measurement system for the longitudinal monitoring of pain experience and variation in different patients with chronic low back pain. The autonomous nervous system and audio-visual features are analyzed from heart rate signals, voice characteristics and facial expressions using a unique measurement protocol. Self-reporting is utilized for the follow-up of changes in pain intensity, induced by well-designed physical …

Kernel manifold alignment for domain adaptation

2016

The wealth of sensory data coming from different modalities has opened numerous opportu- nities for data analysis. The data are of increasing volume, complexity and dimensionality, thus calling for new methodological innovations towards multimodal data processing. How- ever, multimodal architectures must rely on models able to adapt to changes in the data dis- tribution. Differences in the density functions can be due to changes in acquisition conditions (pose, illumination), sensors characteristics (number of channels, resolution) or different views (e.g. street level vs. aerial views of a same building). We call these different acquisition modes domains, and refer to the adaptation proble…

Contextualized project-based learning for training chemical engineers in graphic expression

2021

Abstract This paper describes the planning of a computer-aided design (CAD) laboratory for training chemical engineers in graphic expression. The CAD laboratory was organised into four projects following a project-based learning method. Flipped classroom and contextualised learning were used to motivate the students and promote meaningful learning. The laboratory mainly focused on engaging the students by replicating 2D and 3D plans of common industrial engineering equipment and piping and instrumentation diagrams of industrial facilities. Two surveys carried out before and after the course showed that the student’s perception of their graphic expression skills significantly increased. Gend…
