pcaExplorer: an R/Bioconductor package for interacting with RNA-seq principal components

2019

AbstractBackgroundPrincipal component analysis (PCA) is frequently useentirely written ind in genomics applications for quality assessment and exploratory analysis in high-dimensional data, such as RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) gene expression assays. Despite the availability of many software packages developed for this purpose, an interactive and comprehensive interface for performing these operations is lacking.ResultsWe developed the pcaExplorer software package to enhance commonly performed analysis steps with an interactive and user-friendly application, which provides state saving as well as the automated creation of reproducible reports. pcaExplorer is implemented in R using the Shiny fra…

A Musical Pattern Discovery System Founded on a Modeling of Listening Strategies

2004

Music is a domain of expression that conveys a paramount degree of complexity. The musical surface, composed of a multitude of notes, results from the elaboration of numerous structures of different types and sizes. The composer constructs this structural complexity in a more or less explicit way. The listener, faced by such a complex phenomenon, is able to reconstruct only a limited part of it, mostly in a non-explicit way. One particular aim of music analysis is to objectify such complexity, thus offering to the listener a tool for enriching the appreciation of music (Lartillot and SaintJames, 2004). The trouble is, traditional musical analysis, although offering a valuable understanding …

Dynamic Channel Aggregation Strategies in Cognitive Radio Networks with Spectrum Adaptation

2011

In cognitive radio networks, channel aggregation techniques which combine several channels together as one channel have been proposed in many MAC protocols. In this paper, spectrum adaptation is proposed in channel aggregation and two strategies which dynamically adjust channel occupancy of ongoing traffic flows are further developed. The performance of these strategies is evaluated using continuous time Markov chain models. Moreover, models in the quasi-stationary regime are analyzed and the closed-form capacity expression is derived in this regime. Numerical results demonstrate that the capacity of the secondary network can be improved by using channel aggregation with spectrum adaptation.

Stress-Strain Law for Confined Concrete with Hardening or Softening Behavior

2013

This paper provides a new general stress-strain law for concrete confined by steel, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), or fiber reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM), obtained by a suitable modification of the well-known Sargin’s curve for steel confined concrete. The proposed law is able to reproduce stress-strain curve of any shape, having both hardening or softening behavior, by using a single closed-form simple algebraic expression with constant coefficients. The coefficients are defined on the basis of the stress and the tangent modulus of the confined concrete in three characteristic points of the curve, thus being related to physical meaningful parameters. It will be shown that if the v…

MicroRNA-Based Therapeutic Perspectives in Myotonic Dystrophy

2019

Myotonic dystrophy involves two types of chronically debilitating rare neuromuscular diseases: type 1 (DM1) and type 2 (DM2). Both share similarities in molecular cause, clinical signs, and symptoms with DM2 patients usually displaying milder phenotypes. It is well documented that key clinical symptoms in DM are associated with a strong mis-regulation of RNA metabolism observed in patient’s cells. This mis-regulation is triggered by two leading DM-linked events: the sequestration of Muscleblind-like proteins (MBNL) and the mis-regulation of the CUGBP RNA-Binding Protein Elav-Like Family Member 1 (CELF1) that cause significant alterations to their important functions in RNA processing. It ha…

The Convention For Choosing The Applicable Law – A Construction Specific For The Relationships Of Private Law With Foreign Element

2017

The legal relationships with foreign element generate the need to designate the law applicable in the conflict of laws. The national conflictual right and the European regulations govern the two complementary mechanisms for determining the law of the cause. Choosing the law by the parties gives expression to the subjective determination that, for some matters, is the rule, and for others, is the subsidiary solution. The recourse to the localization criteria of the applicable law signifies the objective determination of the law and contains variants that always lead to the identification of the lex causae. The method of concretizing the will of the parties is the choice convention of the app…

Emotional intelligence intervention in older adults to improve adaptation and reduce negative mood.

2020

AbstractObjectives:Emotional intelligence (EI) is a strong predictor of negative mood. Applying emotional skills correctly can help to increase positive emotional states and reduce negative ones. This study aims to implement EI intervention designed to improve clarity, repair EI dimensions and coping strategies, and reduce negative mood in older adults.Design:Participants were randomly assigned to the treatment or control group.Setting:Participants were evaluated individually before and after the intervention.Participants:Participants included 111 healthy older adults; 51 in the treatment group and 60 in the control group.Intervention:An EI program was implemented. The program was administe…

2014

Background Coping plays an important role for emotion regulation in threatening situations. The model of coping modes designates repression and sensitization as two independent coping styles. Repression consists of strategies that shield the individual from arousal. Sensitization indicates increased analysis of the environment in order to reduce uncertainty. According to the discontinuity hypothesis, repressors are sensitive to threat in the early stages of information processing. While repressors do not exhibit memory disturbances early on, they manifest weak memory for these stimuli later. This study investigates the discontinuity hypothesis using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fM…

The Effects of Mindfulness and Self-Compassion on Improving the Capacity to Adapt to Stress Situations in Elderly People Living in the Community

2015

ABSTRACTObjectives: This study aimed to show the effectiveness of mindfulness and self-compassion therapy in improving coping ability and adaptation to stressful situations in the elderly. Methods: Forty-five elderly non-institutionalized adults were randomized to either treatment or a treatment waiting list. A pre- and post-treatment assessment was performed, consisting of the Brief Resilient Coping Scale (BRCS), Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS), and Coping Strategies Questionnaire. The program was developed over 10 sessions lasting 120 minutes each. Results: Analysis of variance for repeated measures showed significant differences in the time-group interaction for the treatment’s eff…
