Reaction of lithium enediolates with perfluoroketene dithioacetals. Synthesis of α-trifluoromethyl γ-dicarboxylic acid derivatives

2004

The reaction of perfluoroketene dithioacetals with dianions of carboxylic acids proceeds through the substitution of the vinylic fluoride. The preparative value of this reaction depends strongly on the reaction and work-up conditions, the optimisation of which led to use LDA as a base and multiple extraction techniques. The overall process may be considered as a formal synthesis of α-trifluoromethyl γ-dicarboxylic acid derivatives.

Quantitative Comparison of Free and Bound Volatiles of Two Commercial Tomato Cultivars (Solanum lycopersicumL.) during Ripening

2009

The changes in the profile of both free and glycosidically bound volatiles were studied in Moneymaker and Raf tomato cultivars during fruit ripening. The concentrations of 20 of 24 and of 27 of 30 compounds detected in the free volatile fraction (FVF) and glycosidically bound fraction (GBF), respectively, differed significantly between cultivars during ripening. Most free and bound volatiles increased during ripening in both cultivars. The contribution of each free volatile compound to the overall aroma was estimated by calculating its log U value, which indicated that only 11 compounds seem to exert a strong influence. Nine volatiles were detected exclusively in the GBF, among them geranio…

Extraction of amino acids with emulsion liquid membranes using industrial surfactants and lecithin as stabilisers

2000

Abstract Industrial surfactants (being the mixtures of several individual compounds) were used as stabilisers of emulsion liquid membranes (ELMs). Although, some impurities present in technical formulations of these compounds were extracted to aqueous solutions of amino acids, most of the used surfactants well served to this purpose. In the case of amino acid transport, they do not act as carriers and application of additional carrier (such as D2EHP) was required in order to facilitate the transport. Interestingly, the same properties were found for lecithin, industrially important natural surfactant. Lecithin applied as a chiral discriminator, used either as an emulsion stabiliser or carri…

Concentration of amino acids using supported liquid membranes with di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid as a carrier

1997

Abstract Basic studies of a procedure for extraction of amino acids using a supported liquid membrane containing di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid are presented. The extractions are made from an aqueous donor phase with pH 3 to a more acidic acceptor phase and the mass transfer is driven by the proton gradient between these phases. For 0.01 mM tryptophan and with 1 M HCl as acceptor phase, an extraction efficiency of 60% is obtained, constant up to at least 12 h. This permits concentration enrichment factors linearly increasing with time up to values of at least 150. For higher amino acid concentrations, the extraction efficiency is constant only over shorter time intervals.

A New Steroidal Saponin from Dioscorea cayenensis

2004

The new 26-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3beta,26-dihydroxy-20,22-seco-25(R)-furost-5-en-20,22-dione-3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->4)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->4)-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), along with the known methyl protodioscin (2), asperoside (3) and prosapogenin A of dioscin (4) were isolated from the rhizomes of Dioscorea cayenensis LAM.-HOLL (Dioscoreaceae). Their structures were established mainly on the basis of 600 MHz 2D-NMR spectral data. 4 exhibited antifungal activity against the human pathogenic yeasts Candida albicans, C. glabrata and C. tropicalis (MICs of 20.8, 6.25, 25 microg/ml, respectively), whereas saponins 1-3 were inactive.

Separation of amino acid enantiomers using supported liquid membrane extraction with chiral phosphates and phosphonates

1999

A series of dialkyl and monoalkyl phosphates, phosphites and phosphinates based on (−)-menthol and (−)-nopol were synthesized and used as carriers for transport of aromatic amino acids through supported liquid membranes. Although all the compounds were found to be effective carriers (with transport rate dependent on their structure) the enantioselectivity of the process obtained was low or moderate. Aromatic amino acids were enantioselectively transported through supported liquid membranes containing chiral phosphates, phosphites and phosphinates as carriers. Download full-size image

Distribution of volatile organic compounds in Sicilian groundwaters analysed by head space-solid phase micro extraction coupled with gas chromatograp…

2008

This work presents the results of an assessment of the existence and concentration of 13 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in groundwaters from 14 hydrological basins in Sicily (25,710km (2)). On the basis of hydrological, hydrogeochemical and geological studies, 324 sampling points were selected. All groundwater sampled were collected twice, from October to December 2004 and from February to May 2005, and were analysed to determine the concentration and spatial distribution of the VOCs in the aquifers. The need to analyze a large number of samples in a short space of time so as to obtain quantitative analyses in trace concentration levels spurred us to create a new analytical method, both …

Abstract. Here we present a sensitive method to analyze lignin oxidation products (LOPs) in speleothems and cave drip water to provide a new tool for paleo-vegetation reconstruction. Speleothems are valuable climate archives. However, compared to other terrestrial climate archives, such as lake sediments, speleothems contain very little organic matter. Therefore, very few studies on organic biomarkers in speleothems are available. Our new sensitive method allows us to use LOPs as vegetation biomarkers in speleothems. Our method consists of acid digestion of the speleothem sample followed by solid-phase extraction (SPE) of the organic matter. The extracted polymeric lignin is degraded in a m…

CMPO-substituted calix[6]- and calix[8]arene extractants for the separation of An3+/Ln3+ from radioactive waste

2006

Abstract Three calix[6]arene derivatives ( 1a – c ) and two calix[8]arene derivatives ( 2a , b ), with six and eight CMPO residues, respectively, attached to the narrow/lower rim via ether links, were synthesised. Preliminary liquid–liquid extraction studies for Eu(III) and Am(III) from aqueous nitric acid to o -nitrophenylhexyl ether reveal remarkable properties with respect to efficiency and selectivity, especially for the tert -butylcalix[6]arene derivative with a –(CH 2 ) 3 – spacer.
