The UWB-OFDM Channel Analysis in Frequency

2009

In this paper, the ultra-wideband channel with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (UWB-OFDM) is analyzed in the frequency domain. For UWB-OFDM channels with log-normal fading in the time domain, we show that the amplitude of each subcarrier can be approximated by a Nakagami-m random variable, where the fading parameter, the mean power and the correlation coefficient are expressed in terms of the following parameters: time arrival of the clusters, inter-arrival time of rays inside clusters, and power decay constants of rays and clusters.

Geometry-Based Statistical Modeling of Non-WSSUS Mobile-to-Mobile Rayleigh Fading Channels

2017

In this paper, we present a novel geometry-based statistical model for small-scale non-wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (non-WSSUS) mobile-to-mobile (M2M) Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed model builds on the principles of plane wave propagation to capture the temporal evolution of the propagation delay and Doppler shift of the received multipath signal. This is different from existing non-WSSUS geometry-based statistical channel models, which are based on a spherical wave propagation approach, that in spite of being more realistic is more mathematically intricate. By considering an arbitrary geometrical configuration of the propagation area, we derive general expressions …

Rateless codes mitigation technique in a turbulent indoor Free Space Optics link

2014

Free Space Optics (FSO) links are affected by several impairments and, among them, optical turbulence is the most important factor that can degrade the link quality. Due to the presence of this phenomenon, the signal irradiance detected by the receiver fluctuates, thus causing erasure errors and fading events. In this work, we present an indoor Free Space Optics link, in which several turbulence conditions are generated by using two heating elements. We show that the generated turbulence causes erasure errors and packet losses during the data transmission, and we also compare the statistical distribution of the samples with the theoretical models. Moreover, we demonstrate how the applicatio…

Apparent remote synchronization of amplitudes: A demodulation and interference effect

2018

A form of "remote synchronization" was recently described, wherein amplitude fluctuations across a ring of non-identical, non-linear electronic oscillators become entrained into spatially-structured patterns. According to linear models and mutual information, synchronization and causality dip at a certain distance, then recover before eventually fading. Here, the underlying mechanism is finally elucidated through novel experiments and simulations. The system non-linearity is found to have a dual role: it supports chaotic dynamics, and it enables the energy exchange between the lower and higher sidebands of a predominant frequency. This frequency acts as carrier signal in an arrangement rese…

The Wigner Distribution of Sum-of-Cissoids and Sum-of-Chirps Processes for the Modelling of Stationary and Non-Stationary Mobile Channels

2016

This paper concerns the time-frequency analysis of stationary and non-stationary multipath flat fading channels. For the modelling of stationary multipath fading channels, we use a sum-of-cisoids (SOCi) process, while the non-stationary channel is modelled by a sum-of-chirps (SOCh) process that captures the time-variant Doppler effect caused by speed variations of the mobile station. For the time-frequency analysis, we apply the concept of the Wigner distribution. Closed-form solutions are provided for the Wigner distribution of SOCi and SOCh processes. It is shown that the obtained Wigner distributions can be expressed by the sum of an auto-term representing the true Doppler power spectral…

A Non-Stationary Mobile-to-Mobile Channel Model Allowing for Velocity and Trajectory Variations of the Mobile Stations

2017

In mobile-to-mobile (M2M) communication systems, both the transmitter and the receiver are moving with a certain velocity, which is usually assumed to be constant over time. However, in realistic propagation scenarios, the velocity of the mobile stations (MSs) is subject to changes resulting in a non-stationary fading process. In this paper, we develop a non-stationary narrow-band M2M multipath fading channel model, where the transmitter and the receiver experience changes in their velocities and trajectories. For this model, we derive expressions for the local autocorrelation function (ACF), the Wigner-Ville spectrum, the local average Doppler shift, and the local Doppler spread under isot…

Rateless Codes Performance Tests On Terrestrial FSO Time-Correlated Channel Model

2012

Free Space Optics (FSO) links are affected by several impairments: optical turbulence, scattering, absorption, and pointing. In particular, atmospheric optical turbulence generates optical power fluctuations at the receiver that can degrade communications with fading events, especially, in high data rate links. A way to mitigate FSO link outages can be to add a coding to communications. Nevertheless, in order to study innovative solutions (software or hardware) and to improve the FSO link performance it needs accurate testing models. In this paper we describe an accurate time-correlated channel model able to predict random temporal fluctuations of optical signal irradiance caused by optical…

Diagonal space time hadamard codes with erasure decoding algorithm

2005

A major challenge in the area of space time (ST) codes is to find codes suitable for efficient decoding, thus overcoming the problem of many existing ST code designs which require maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding. A solution could be to apply single-input single-output (SISO) channel codes and theory over temporal channel fading to the multi-input single-output (MISO) code construction and classical suboptimum decoding methods. For these purposes, an ST code construction which allows the use of efficient decoding algorithms is described. We propose a concatenated code, where the inner code is the diagonal ST Hadamard (D-STH) code with Paley constructions and the outer code is an algebraic b…

Design and Simulation of Measurement-Based Correlation Models for Shadow Fading

2011

This paper deals with the design of measurement-based correlation models for shadow fading. Based on the correlation model, we design a simulation model using the sum-of-sinusoids (SOS) method to enable the simulation of spatial lognormal processes characterizing real-world shadow fading scenarios. The model parameters of the simulation model are computed by applying the Lp-norm method (LPNM). This method facilitates an excellent fitting of the simulation model’s autocorrelation function (ACF) to that of measured channels. Our study includes an evaluation of all important statistical quantities of the proposed measurement-based simulation model, such as the probability density function (PDF…

An experimental testbed of an Internet of Underwater Things

2020

A number of critical features have so far slowed down the realization of an Internet of Underwater Things. The most relevant of these aspects are related to the unreliability of the communication channel, the long propagation delay and the effect of severe multi-path and fading. This paper presents the design and development of a hybrid underwater-terrestrial IoT where different underwater sensors collect heterogeneous data and use marine acoustic modems to send information to a gateway device; this is able to set up a long distance link, implemented through a LoRaWAN connection, to forward data to a remote cloud for further processing. Performance of this system has been tested in a real s…
