Ring diameter effects on determination of field-saturated hydraulic conductivity of different loam soils

2017

Abstract Establishing ring diameter effects on the field-saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Kfs, determined with ponding infiltrometer methods can help to find a compromise between the need to sample a large area with an individual measurement and the impracticality of using large rings in the field. Five ring sizes (diameter, D = 5.5, 10.9, 16.0, 27.8 and 31.8 cm) were used to determine Kfs by the simplified falling head (SFH) technique in four loamy soils with different salinity (electrical conductivity of saturated extract, ECe = 0.9–29.4 dS/m) and sodicity (exchangeable sodium percentage, ESP = 2.7–81.3%) levels. According to USDA classification, two soils were non-saline, non-sodic…

The Fall of Rome and the Decay of our Present Civilisation – A Repetitive Process? – The Decay of “Gods”

2014

Abstract Attacked and weakened, especially in the last three centuries, both from inside and outside, Rome and the Western Roman Empire will fall in 476 A.D. Actually, what were the causes? Hit and weakened by the present global economic-financial crises – and not only – our European civilisation faces some of the highest risks. Often, people say it is a real collapse. Are the causes of these falls – of the European-type civilisation – similar? And being familiar with Roman experience, how can we prevent such harmful processes? Further, we try to provide a few answers in this respect.

Dades massives i estadística: La perspectiva d'un estadístic

2014

Daily streamlow prediction with uncertainty in ephemeral catchments using the GLUE methodology

2009

Abstract The Generalised Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) approach is presented here as a tool for estimating the predictive uncertainty of a rainfall–runoff model. The GLUE methodology allows to recognise the possible equifinality of different parameter sets and assesses the likelihood of a parameters set being acceptable simulator when model predictions are compared to observed field data. The results of the GLUE methodology depend greatly on the choice of the likelihood measure and on the choice of the threshold which determines if a parameters set is behavioural or not. Moreover the sampling size has a strong influence on the uncertainty assessment of the response of a rainfall–…

Somali Contract Law: Constitutional and Comparative Perspectives

2019

The Somali legal system had a very peculiar development. After colonisation, the independent country adopted a Civil law based legal system largely influenced by Italian law. The Civil Code adopted in 1973 was modeled on the Egyptian homologue enriched with other influences, mainly Italian. From the constitutional perspective, the country had three constitutions before the collapse of the state, followed recently by a provisional constitution that introduces a federal system to try to keep the unity of the State under the federal umbrella. The 1973 Somali Civil Code is formally still in force, as after the fall of Siad Barre the state failure brought with it the lack of any authority capabl…

Identification of Potential Locations for Run-of-River Hydropower Plants Using a GIS-Based Procedure

2019

The increasing demand for renewable and sustainable energy sources has encouraged the development of small run-of-river plants. Preliminary studies are required to assess the technical and economic feasibility of such plants. In this context, the identification of optimal potential run-of-river sites has become a key issue. In this paper, an approach that is based on GIS tools coupled with a hydrological model has been applied to detect potential locations for a run-of-river plant. A great number of locations has been analyzed to identify those that could assure the achievement of different thresholds of potential power. The environmental and economic feasibility for small hydropower projec…

A PCA-based clustering algorithm for the identification of stratiform and convective precipitation at the event scale: an application to the sub-hour…

2021

AbstractUnderstanding the structure of precipitation and its separation into stratiform and convective components is still today one of the important and interesting challenges for the scientific community. Despite this interest and the advances made in this field, the classification of rainfall into convective and stratiform components is still today not trivial. This study applies a novel criterion based on a clustering approach to analyze a high temporal resolution precipitation dataset collected for the period 2002–2018 over the Sicily (Italy). Starting from the rainfall events obtained from this dataset, the developed methodology makes it possible to classify the rainfall events into f…

How physical parameterizations can modulate internal variability in a regional climate model

2012

Abstract The authors analyze to what extent the internal variability simulated by a regional climate model is sensitive to its physical parameterizations. The influence of two convection schemes is quantified over southern Africa, where convective rainfall predominates. Internal variability is much larger with the Kain–Fritsch scheme than for the Grell–Dévényi scheme at the seasonal, intraseasonal, and daily time scales, and from the regional to the local (grid point) spatial scales. Phenomenological analyses reveal that the core (periphery) of the rain-bearing systems tends to be highly (weakly) reproducible, showing that it is their morphological features that induce the largest internal …

Influence of the Madden-Julian Oscillation on East African rainfall. Part I: Intraseasonal variability and regional dependency

2006

The influence of the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) on rainfall amounts over Equatorial East Africa (Kenya and northern Tanzania) is analysed for the period 1979–95 at the intraseasonal (pentad) time-scale. The two rainy seasons (March to May and October to December) are considered. Intraseasonal wet events in East Africa are embedded in large-scale zonal circulation anomaly patterns along the equator, showing distinct eastward propagation. It is further found that these ‘wet’ events display a clear phasing with respect to the MJO cycle. This phasing is expressed as out-of-phase variations between the Highland and the coastal areas. Such a pattern is suggested to reflect different rain-cau…
