Regional frequency analysis of extreme rainfall in Sicily (Italy)

Extreme rainfall events have large impacts on society and are likely to increase in intensity under climate change. For design and management decisions, particularly regarding hydraulic works, accurate estimates of precipitation magnitudes are needed at different durations. Undersea cables for telecommunications are put out after 20 to 25 years of service in order to be replaced by new type ones that can yield a better service. As a rule, decommissioned cables are retrieved for the part stretching from the shoreline to the line (-30 m). This operation is useful from the environmental standpoint, as at the price of an energy expenditure of about 3 MJ/m an amount of materials having embodied energy as high as 72 times of it are recovered. Theoretical prediction of rainfall intensity for a small rainfall simulator

In this contribution, a theoretical approach was developed for predicting rainfall intensity for a small rainfall simulator. The developed equation was tested for two different devices and different pressure head and water temperature values. The proposed relationship was found to have a good predictive ability of rainfall intensity. The proposed theoretical approach could be usable with other devices that operate on the same principles of the simulator considered in this investigation.

Business Cycle Affiliations in the Context of European Integration

We study affiliations for the countries of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) with Germany and the USA, using various business cycle measures derived from quarterly real GDP. These measures are Hodrick-Prescott and Baxter-King filtered series and annual growth rates. By using rolling contemporaneous and maximum (over a short lead/lag interval) correlations, we document increasing correlations of EMU countries with Germany, with these typically being largest during the 1990s.
