Perspectives and challenges of small scale plant microalgae cultivation. Evidences from Southern Italy
2020
Abstract In recent years, the cultivation of algae has achieved attention of scientists and practicioniers due to the great variety of products that can be obtained, among which biofuels. The aim of this work is twofold. The first is to perform a profitability analysis of food and biofuel production from microalgae, in a small-scale setting. The second is to assess the economic impact of algae production systems on the dairy farms potentially interested in Southern Italy. The analysis was performed using financial and economic indicators and considering two system management scenarios, namely single and collective. Our results confirm that current microalgae production technology favors bio…
Legal Scholars Communities and Academic Conferences
2012
Many scientific communities – including those devoted to the study of law – regularly organize academic conferences to which all members of the considered community are called to attend. After describing the goals of these conferences, their types, their social costs and the positive externalities they may produce, this paper analyzes which type of academic conference could be most appropriate in order to maximize social welfare, which the practices of the Spanish legal scholars in this respect are and why such practices do not always seem to be the best ones from a public interest point of view.
Human-Animal Relationships in Supported Housing: Animal Atmospheres for Mental Health Recovery
2021
Being in a relationship with an animal can promote the well-being of people. For many individuals, this usually takes place at home. This study reports about homes for people with mental health problems (with or without co-occurring substance use), who live in supported housing operated by public landlords, entailing tenancies that are usually stricter regarding their pet policies than ordinary homes. We thus addressed the following research questions through ethnographic fieldwork at seven distinct places: which types of human–animal relationships occur in supported housing, and how do they affect the tenants? We analyzed the collected data informed by the Grounded Theory approach and foun…
Hidden Markov Random Field model and BFGS algorithm for Brain Image Segmentation
2016
Brain MR images segmentation has attracted a particular focus in medical imaging. The automatic image analysis and interpretation became a necessity. Segmentation is one of the key operations to provide a crucial decision support to physicians. Its goal is to simplify the representation of an image into items meaningful and easier to analyze. Hidden Markov Random Fields (HMRF) provide an elegant way to model the segmentation problem. This model leads to the minimization problem of a function. BFGS (Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno algorithm) is one of the most powerful methods to solve unconstrained optimization problem. This paper presents how we combine HMRF and BFGS to achieve a good seg…
Agroecology as a challenge for the competitiveness of small scale agriculture
2018
Monitoring the issue arenas of the swine‐flu discussion
2013
PurposeThis paper seeks to describe the changing organizational environment and stakeholder debate currently taking place in various “issue arenas” during a crisis. Organizations today need to find and monitor these arenas before being able to communicate with their stakeholders.Design/methodology/approachCommunications of authorities and discussions by citizens are studied and analyzed in a case study related to the 2009 swine flu or influenza A (H1N1) episode in Finland. The organizational point of view is studied through media releases of the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), and the citizen point of view through a content analysis of popular discussion online forums throu…
Application of polymeric nanoparticles in immunotherapy.
2012
Purpose of review The purpose of the present review is to underline the importance of nanoparticulate carriers, such as polymeric nanoparticles, in the future development of safe and effective formulation in the field of immunotherapy against infectious diseases and cancer. Recent findings Polymeric nanoparticles can modulate the immune response, that is, by targeting antigens to dendritic cells that possess a crucial role in initiating immune responses, and might be potentially useful in immunotherapy. Summary In the last decades, significant progress in research and clinics has been made to offer possible innovative therapeutics for the management of infectious diseases and cancer. Polyme…
Altruism in business – an empirical study of philanthropy in the small business context
2012
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine corporate philanthropy from the perspective of small business owner‐managers to find out whether there is room for altruism in business life.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on 25 thematic interviews with small business owner‐managers. The data analysis is based on a method of qualitative content analysis.FindingsBased on the analysis, it is shown that reactivity, an emphasis on personal interests, the willingness to utilize philanthropy as part of marketing and lack of planning are typical of philanthropy in the small business context. Small businesses often emphasize strategic business reasons as the main motive for their philan…
