Dietary cholate increases plasma levels of apolipoprotein B in mice by posttranscriptional mechanisms

2001

To induce atherogenesis in mice, a high fat (HF) diet is supplemented with cholic acid (CA), which increases apoB-containing particles and lower apoA-I-containing particles. HF diet without CA increases levels of both HDL and LDL, suggesting that CA may be responsible for the elevation of LDL and lowering of HDL. The mechanism of dietary CA-induced lowering of apoA-I-containing particles has recently been reported. In this study, we examined the mechanism of CA- and HF-induced elevation of apoB-containing lipoproteins in mice. Mice were fed the following four diets: control chow (C), high fat high cholesterol, (HF), control and 0.5% cholate (CA), and HF + CA. Dietary CA increased the plasma…

Ofatumumab (OFA) in Combination with CHOP for Previously Untreated Follicular Lymphoma: Follow-up Results

2012

Abstract Abstract 1632 Background: OFA is a fully human monoclonal antibody that binds to both the large and small extracellular loops of CD20. OFA is currently approved for patients (pts) with refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia and has demonstrated activity in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, including follicular lymphoma (FL). We previously reported results of a phase II study of OFA in combination with CHOP (cyclophosphamide 750 mg/m2, doxorubicin 50 mg/m2, vincristine 1.4 mg/m2, prednisone 100 mg daily for 5 days) chemotherapy (O-CHOP) in pts with previously untreated FL (Czuczman et al. Br J Haematol. 2012;157:438). We now report updated efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetic (PK) follow-up…

Long-term, open-labeled extension study of idursulfase in the treatment of Hunter syndrome.

2011

Purpose: This study evaluated the safety and effectiveness of long-term enzyme replacement therapy with idursulfase (recombinant human iduronate-2-sulfatase) in patients with Hunter syndrome. Methods: All 94 patients who completed a 53-week double-blinded study of idursulfase enrolled in this open-labeled extension study and received intravenous idursulfase at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg weekly for 2 years, and clinical outcomes and safety were assessed. Results: No change in percent predicted forced vital capacity was seen, but absolute forced vital capacity demonstrated sustained improvement and was increased 25.1% at the end of the study. Statistically significant increases in 6-minute walking t…

Roentgenological observations on vocal fold length-changes with special reference to register transition and open/covered voice

1992

This paper examines the length-changes of the vocal folds as a function of voice pitch. Changes in normalized vocal fold elongation (strain) were measured indirectly from calcification points in several laryngeal structures from roentgenological exposures during singing. Changes in vocal fold strain are shown to occur mainly in the register transition area, i.e. the area within which all register changes take place. Changes in vocal fold strain appeared similar in male and female subjects. Evidence for different strain patterns in covered and open singing is presented for female subjects: Strain is higher in non-singers and (“incorrect”) open voice, lower in singers and (“correct”) covered …

Postprandial triglyceridaemia is modulated by insulin resistance but not by grade of obesity in abdominal and morbid obese subjects

2020

Background Obesity is associated with high cardiovascular risk. Postprandial lipidaemia has been associated with cardiovascular disease risk. Our aim was to identify whether anthropometric parameters, insulin resistance (IR) and/or fasting plasma triglycerides may determine postprandial changes in lipoprotein concentrations in abdominal and morbid obese subjects. Methods We have studied 20 non-diabetic, normolipidaemic subjects with abdominal obesity, 20 morbid obese subjects and 20 healthy individuals, that have similar age and gender. In all of them a standardised oral fat load test (OFLT) with unsaturated fat was performed. Results During the OFLT, the postprandial triglycerides response…

A tailored telephone and email based exercise intervention induced reductions in various measures of body composition in physically inactive adults: …

2018

Obesity prevalence has increased the past decades and has become a serious public health problem. The aim of this six-month assessor-blinded, parallel-group randomized controlled trial was to assess the effect of a tailored telephone and email-based exercise intervention on various measures of body composition in a sample of apparently healthy and physically inactive adults. A total of 111 volunteering adults (40–55 yr) in Southern Norway were randomly assigned to an intervention group (IG; n = 39) or a no-information control group (CG; n = 50), by random allocation numbering. The IG received feedback on their health-related physical fitness, information on guidelines and recommendations fo…

High-Intensity Interval and Resistance Training Improve Health Outcomes in Older Adults With Coronary Disease.

2021

Both high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and resistance exercises (R) are used in cardiac rehabilitation in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the combined effect of an HIIT + R exercise program in older adults with CAD is not well investigated. The study's purpose was to assess the changes in anthropometric parameters, physical activity, functional capacity, physiological parameters, and quality of life (QoL) in this population following a combined HIIT + R program. The study was a 2-group (n = 45 each) randomized controlled single-blinded trial. The study was done at a treatment clinic of a tertiary hospital. The mean age of participants was 69.23 ± 4.9 years. The HII…

Normative values for musculoskeletal- and neuromotor fitness in apparently healthy Norwegian adults and the association with obesity: a cross-section…

2016

Background Up-to-date research on musculoskeletal- and neuromotor fitness (MSMF) is lacking. The aims of the present paper were to a) establish normative values of MSMF by gender and age, and b) to assess how much of the variance in MSMF can be explained by obesity in adults. Methods A random selection of 726 Norwegians (20–65 years) participated in a national cross-sectional study. Muscular endurance, muscular strength, explosive power, flexibility and balance were assessed in addition to waist circumference (WC). Results Females displayed significantly higher scores compared to males on muscular endurance of the back extensors and on the flexibility tests (p < 0.001). Males displayed sign…

Effects of strength and endurance training on thigh and leg muscle mass and composition in elderly women

1995

The effects of 18 wk of intensive strength and endurance training on knee extensor, knee flexor, and lower leg muscle mass and composition were studied in 76- to 78-yr-old women. Muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), lean tissue CSA, and relative proportion of fat were determined using computed tomography. The strength-trained women increased their total muscle lean tissue CSA of the thigh (1.5%; P = 0.035), quadriceps CSA (4.5%; P = 0.021), quadriceps lean tissue CSA (5.8%, P = 0.009), and mean Hounsfield unit of the lower leg muscles (11.2%; P = 0.035) compared with the changes that occurred in the control group during the experiment. The change in quadriceps lean tissue CSA because of the …

Associations of physical activity, fitness, and body composition with heart rate variability–based indicators of stress and recovery on workdays: a c…

2014

Background. The purpose of this study was to investigate how physical activity (PA), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and body composition are associated with heart rate variability (HRV)-based indicators of stress and recovery on workdays. Additionally, we evaluated the association of objectively measured stress with self-reported burnout symptoms. Methods. Participants of this cross-sectional study were 81 healthy males (age range 26–40 y). Stress and recovery on workdays were measured objectively based on HRV recordings. CRF and anthropometry were assessed in laboratory conditions. The level of PA was based on a detailed PA interview (MET index [MET-h/d]) and self-reported activity class…
