2020

The war that during 1429 and 1430 put face to face the Crowns of Castilla and Aragon, makes a maravellous experimental ground for investigators. Though perfectly well-documented, this fact has been paradoxically negliged because of its lack of political impact. If we follow punctually the events, it is nevertheless possible to prepare a valuable comparative analysis of the characteristics and capacities of the societies in conflict. All this is possible thanks to a better knowledge of the strategies of which public powers dispose to manage a rapid and adequat supply of armament, in a preindustrial context caracterised by the incompetence of the suppliers (craftsmen and traders) to cover, w…

Illicit trades and smuggling activities on the island of Stromboli, 1808–1816: gender roles during a commercial crisis

2020

This article examines the impact of the Continental Blockade upon a local fishing and agricultural economy in the Mediterranean by focusing on the illicit trades that flourished on Stromboli. The island became a strategic location for smuggling between the warring kingdoms of British allied Naples and French ruled Sicily. This paper argues that the Blockade allowed Stromboli to join the network of maritime traffic that had been dominated by the two biggest islands in the archipelago. Although equally integrated into agriculture and fishing, women participated in the fraudulent sale of prize goods but were excluded from large-scale smuggling operations. L'étude examine l'impact du Blocus con…

The fragility of Finnish parliamentary democracy at the moment when Prussianism fell

2019

The Finnish case is in many ways illustrative of the complexities of democratisation after World War I. Finland found itself at the nexus of a Swedish constitutional tradition, legalism and ideological controversies adopted from Imperial Germany, the radicalised Russian Revolution, and Western parliamentary democracy. After having been a model for reformers demanding women’s suffrage, for instance, the country found itself in autumn 1918 going in the opposite direction to almost all other European countries. This article analyses the fragility of Finnish parliamentary democracy then, contrasting it with longer-term trends supportive of democratisation. ‘Democracy’ had been the goal for mos…

The time course of face matching by internal and external features: Effects of context and inversion.

2010

AbstractEffects of context and inversion were studied in face matching tasks by measuring proportion correct as a function of exposure duration. Subjects were instructed to attend either internal features (task A) or external features (task B) and matched two consecutive face stimuli, which included either congruent, incongruent, or no facial context features. In congruent contexts matching performance rose fast and took very similar courses for both types of facial features. With no contexts internal and external features were found to be matched at an equal speed, while incongruent contexts seriously delayed matching performance for internal, but not for external features. Analysing the e…

Microstratigraphy of the Magdalenian sequence at Cendres Cave (Teulada-Moraira, Alicante, Spain): Formation and diagenesis

2013

Abstract This microstratigraphic study of the Magdalenian sequence in the Cendres Cave (Teulada-Moraira, Alicante, Spain) shows the detailed evolutionary history of the deposit, revealing a wide variety of pedosedimentary (formation and diagenesis), biogenic and anthropic processes. The sequence begins with Cendres XII, culturally attributed to the Early and Middle Magdalenian, with high probability (95%) dating placing it between 19,270 and 16,530 cal BP with some chronological hiatus. It was formed from biogenic sedimentation associated with bat guano mainly of an insectivorous type, and from anthropic sedimentation related to occupation floors made up of highly complex plant beds with tr…

The N Variscan margin of the Ruhr coal district (Western Germany): structural style of a buried thrust front?

1988

The Ruhr coal district represents part of an external fold and thrust belt of the Variscan orogen in central Europe. Extensive mining exposed molasse-type, coal-bearing clastic sequences of Upper Carboniferous age, deformed by folding and thrusting. Thrusts range in scale from decameters to 40 kilometers along strike but displacements are below 2.5 km. They are distributed in various stratigraphic levels and no regional detachment horizon is exposed. Displacement is mainly towards NW (towards the foreland) but also towards SE. The thrusts are bound to stockwerk-tectonics and die out towards depth frequently antithetic to the exposed strata. Folds vary in wavelength from decameters to more t…

Influence of basement heterogeneity on the architecture of low subsidence rate Paleozoic intracratonic basins (Ahnet and Mouydir basins, Central Saha…

2018

Abstract. The Paleozoic intracratonic North African Platform is characterized by an association of arches (ridges, domes, swells or paleo-highs) and low subsidence rate syncline basins of different wavelengths (75–620 km). The structural framework of the platform results from the accretion of Archean and Proterozoic terranes during the Pan-African orogeny (750–580 Ma). The Ahnet and Mouydir basins are successively delimited from east to west by the Amguid El Biod, Arak-Foum Belrem, and Azzel Matti arches, bounded by inherited Precambrian sub-vertical fault systems which were repeatedly reactivated or inverted during the Paleozoic. Major unconformities are related to several tectonic events …

Comparison between Different Techniques for Volatiles Analyses in Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.)

2011

Although many papers have been devoted to the study of Coriander fruits aromatic pattern, many differences show up according not only to the provenience of seeds, but also to the analytical methods chosen. In our work, samples from one Coriander small-seeded biotype has been analysed, verifying the differences between (1) the oil extracted by means of a Soxhlet apparatus (2) the same oil sampled by means of HS-SPME and (3) the HS-SPME on the roughly ground seeds, all analysed by direct injection in the GC-MS. The volatile composition detected by means of HS-SPME on oil resembles tightly that performed on Soxhlet extract. With respect to the direct injection, the HS-SPME shows a higher sensi…

Ocean acidification and elevated temperature negatively affect recruitment, oxygen consumption and calcification of the reef-building Dendropoma cris…

2019

Expected temperature rise and seawater pH decrease may affect marine organism fitness. By a transplant experiment involving air-temperature manipulation along a natural CO2 gradient, we investigated the effects of high pCO(2) (similar to 1100 mu atm) and elevated temperature (up to +2 degrees C than ambient conditions) on the reproductive success, recruitment, growth, shell chemical composition and oxygen consumption of the early life stages of the intertidal reef-building vermetid Dendropoma cristatum. Reproductive success was predominantly affected by temperature increase, with encapsulated embryos exhibiting higher survival in control than elevated temperature conditions, which were in t…
