Valutazione tra pari all’università: due approcci didattici a confronto

2020

Online detection and removal of eye blink artifacts from electroencephalogram

2021

Abstract The most prominent type of artifact contaminating electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are the eye blink (EB) artifacts, which could potentially lead to misinterpretation of the EEG signal. Online identification and elimination of eye blink artifacts are crucial in applications such a Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), neurofeedback, and epilepsy diagnosis. In this paper, algorithms that combine unsupervised eye blink artifact detection (eADA) with modified Empirical Mode Decomposition (FastEMD) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) are proposed, i.e., FastEMD-CCA2 and FastCCA, to automatically identify eye blink artifacts and remove them in an online setting. The average accuracy, …

Internal model-based feedback control design for inversion-free feedforward rate-dependent hysteresis compensation of piezoelectric cantilever actuat…

2018

Abstract This study proposes a new rate-dependent feedforward compensator for compensation of hysteresis nonlinearities in smart materials-based actuators without considering the analytical inverse model. The proposed rate-dependent compensator is constructed with the inverse multiplicative structure of the rate-dependent Prandtl–Ishlinskii (RDPI) model. The study also presents an investigation for the compensation error when the proposed compensator is applied in an open-loop feedforward manner. Then, an internal model-based feedback control design is applied with the proposed feedforward compensator to a piezoelectric cantilever actuator. The experimental results illustrate that the propo…

Validation of a food frequency questionnaire for use in Italian adults living in Sicily.

2015

The objective of this study was to validate two interviewer-led food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) of very different lengths: a medium-length FFQ (medium-FFQ) of 36 items and a short-length FFQ (short-FFQ) of 18 items, intending to measure levels of intakes in a local population. Both FFQs were validated against intakes derived from a 3-day dietary record (3-day DR). Sixty-five non-diabetic adults with no known cardiovascular, renal or other systemic diseases were included. High correlation coefficients between the FFQ and the 3-day DR (0.45-0.73) were observed for energy intake, carbohydrates and lipid and protein intake. Bland-Altman plots showed good agreement between the methods. Low …

Effects of ajugarins and related neoclerodane diterpenoids on feeding behaviour of Leptinotarsa decemlineata and Spodoptera exigua larvae

2001

Three naturally occurring ajugarins and seven semisynthetic derivatives of them, possessing different functionalities in the decalin part, together with two natural furoneoclerodane diterpenes, have been assessed as feeding behavior modifying agents of larvae of the generalist Spodoptera exigua and a specialist like Leptinotarsa decemlineata. Ajugarin I and some of its derivatives exhibited a significant antifeedant activity against larvae of S. exigua in both choice and no-choice assays. Conversely, the furoneoclerodane diterpenes only presented antifeedant activity against larvae of L. decemlineata. These results indicate that the biological action of the tested substances is strongly mod…

Evaluating free school fruit: results from a natural experiment in Norway with representative data

2014

AbstractObjectiveTo assess impacts of the nationwide Norwegian School Fruit Scheme (NSFS) using nationally representative data.DesignThe NSFS is organized such that primary-school children (grades 1–7) are randomly assigned to one of three school fruit arrangements: (i) the child receives one free fruit or vegetable per day; (ii) the child is given the option to subscribe to one fruit or vegetable per day at a subsidized price; and (iii) the child attends a school that has no school fruit arrangement.SettingData from an Internet survey are used to compare child and parental fruit and vegetable intakes across the three NSFS groups focusing mainly on groups (i) and (iii). The analysis was con…

Dissipative Solitons, a Novel Paradigm for Mode-locked Lasers

2013

The concept of a "dissipative soliton" provides an excellent framework for understanding complex mode-locked laser pulse dynamics from a unified picture. It has stimulated innovative laser cavity designs in the past few years. This tutorial lecture provides conceptual pictures illustrated with universal dynamics, highlights recent achievements and prospects for mode-locked laser development.

Effect of a Parent-Focused eHealth Intervention on Children’s Fruit, Vegetable, and Discretionary Food Intake (Food4toddlers): Randomized Controlled …

2021

Background In Western countries, children’s diets are often low in fruits and vegetables and high in discretionary foods. Diet in early life tends to track through childhood and youth and even into adulthood. Interventions should, therefore, be delivered in periods when habitual traits are established, as in toddlerhood when children adapt to their family’s diet. Objective In this study, we assessed the effect of the Food4toddlers eHealth intervention, which aimed to enhance toddlers’ diets by shaping their food and eating environment. Methods The Food4toddlers randomized controlled trial was conducted in Norway in 2017-2018. Parent-child dyads were recruited through social media. In total…
