High-efficiency Q-switched erbium fiber laser using a Bragg grating-based modulator
2002
Abstract In this work we analyze the behavior of an erbium-doped fiber laser which is based on a simple scheme. Excitation of the active medium is performed in the 980 nm pump band with a CW semiconductor laser source. Two fiber Bragg gratings acting as mirrors of the Fabry–Perot laser cavity were used. One of these gratings was mounted over a piezoelectric (PZT) element. By applying voltage pulses to the piezoelectric, the laser cavity was temporally modulated and Q-switched laser pulses up to 530 mW peak powers at 3 kHz were obtained. Typical laser emission of 2–3 μs temporal widths and 0.1 nm of optical bandwidth have been achieved when the system was operated at 18.5 kHz repetition rate…
Single-frequency active Q-switched Distributed Fiber Laser Using Acoustic Waves
2007
This letter presents a single mode, actively Q-switched distributed feedback fiber laser. Acoustic pulses are launched into an erbium-doped fiber Bragg grating, resulting in the introduction of a traveling defect. Thus, a transmission peak appears in the reflection band while the pulse travels along the grating. This effect allows the laser to operate in a Q-switched regime, providing optical pulses which repetition rate was continuously tuned up to 10 kHz. Pulses of 168 mW of peak power and 73 ns of temporal width were obtained at low repetition rate.
Dual-kind Q-switching of erbium fiber laser
2014
Two different regimes of Q-switching in the same implementation of an actively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser are demonstrated. Depending on the active fiber length and repetition rate of an intracavity Q-cell (acousto-optic modulator), the laser operates either in the regime of common, rather long and low-power, pulses composed of several sub-pulses or in the one of very short and powerful stimulated Brillouin scattering-induced pulses. The basic physical reason of the laser system to oscillate in one of these two regimes is the existence or absence of CW narrow-line “bad-cavity” lasing in the intervals when the Q-cell is blocked.
Nonlinear dynamics of a two-photon Fabry–Pérot laser
2000
Abstract The steady-state emission, stability and temporal dynamics of a single-mode two-photon laser with a Fabry–Perot cavity is investigated and compared with that of a ring-cavity laser. It is found that the Fabry–Perot cavity makes the laser less efficient than the ring cavity because of spatial hole burning, but the domain of stability is larger for the Fabry–Perot laser. The intensity and phase dynamics are numerically investigated and distinctive features are found in the phase dynamics as compared with one-photon lasers.
Polarization switchable Erbium-doped all-fiber laser
2008
We report an experimental study of an erbium-doped all-fiber laser with electrically switchable output polarization. Fiber Bragg grating written in a polarization maintaining optical fiber and attached to a piezo-ceramic actuator is used to commute the polarization state of the laser emission. The laser oscillates at one of two orthogonal polarizations depending on voltage applied to the actuator.
Tunable dual-wavelength thulium-doped fiber laser in the range from 2067 to 2073.5 nm
2017
A tunable dual-wavelength lineal cavity Tm-doped fiber laser is presented. The generation of the laser lines is based on the use of cascaded fiber Bragg gratings and a Hi-Bi fiber optic loop mirror.
Simple digital system for tuning and long-term frequency stabilization of a CW Ti:Sapphire laser
2015
We have implemented a simple digital system for long-term frequency stabilization and locking to an arbitrary wavelength of the single-frequency ring CW Ti:Sapphire laser. This system is built using two confocal Fabry-Perot cavities, one of which is used to narrow the short-term linewidth of the laser and the other to improve the long-term stability of the laser frequency. The length of the second cavity is stabilized using the radiation from an external-cavity diode laser locked to an atomic transition. Our system is an improvement of a commercial Tekhnoscan laser lock. This system has been successfully used in our experiments on high-resolution laser spectroscopy of ultracold rubidium Ryd…
All-fiber actively Q-switched Yb-doped laser
2006
Abstract An all-fiber actively Q-switched Yb-doped laser is presented. Q-switching is performed by modulating a fiber Bragg grating via a magnetostrictive rod which is fixed to the fiber at the position of the grating. By exposing the rod to a changing magnetic field, the rod is stretched and relaxed causing the Bragg wavelength of the grating to shift and thereby changes the Q-factor of the cavity. Using Yb-doped fiber, pulses at 1052 nm are obtained at repetition rates from 1 to 200 kHz. At 75 kHz, 0.5 μJ pulses with peak powers of 3 W can be produced when 180 mW of pump power is applied. To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first all-fiber actively Q-switched Yb-doped laser prese…
Fiber Ring Laser Operated by Dynamic Local Phase Shifting of a Chirped Grating
2009
An ultranarrow linewidth erbium-doped fiber ring laser is presented. It is based on the filtering properties of a phase-shifted chirped fiber Bragg grating, which is inserted inside the cavity of the laser. A dynamic control of the phase shifting, which is induced by a magnetostrictive transducer, permits both tunable continuous-wave and actively Q-switched operation. The use of a chirped grating overcomes the limitations imposed by the narrow spectra of uniform gratings observed in previously reported ring lasers based on intracavity transmission filters.
Q-switched all-fibre laser using a fibre-optic resonant acousto-optic modulator
2007
Abstract We report an actively Q-switched all-fibre laser using a fibre-optic resonant acousto-optic modulator as Q-switching element. The modulator consists of a short-length fibre Bragg grating modulated by a standing longitudinal elastic wave, being the grating length much shorter than the acoustic wavelength. Q-switch pulses were successfully obtained from an Er3+-doped fibre laser at repetition rates of 18 and 37 kHz.
