Improved Maximum Strength, Vertical Jump and Sprint Performance after 8 Weeks of Jump Squat Training with Individualized Loads

2016

The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of 8 weeks of jump squat training on isometric half squat maximal force production (Fmax) and rate of force development over 100ms (RFD100), countermovement jump (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ) height, and 50 m sprint time in moderately trained men. Sixty eight subjects (~21 years, ~180 cm, ~75 kg) were divided into experimental (EXP; n = 36) and control (CON, n = 32) groups. Tests were completed pre-, mid- and post-training. EXP performed jump squat training 3 times per week using loads that allowed all repetitions to be performed with ≥90% of maximum average power output (13 sessions with 4 sets of 8 repetitions and 13 sessions with 8 sets o…

Teacher Feedback to Writing of Secondary School Learners of English in the Polish Classroom Context

2023

Since 1960s, process-oriented methodology in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) writing has been thoroughly studied, researched, and successfully incorporated into pedagogy due to its repeatedly proven effectiveness. One of the procedures associated with this methodology is the provision of teacher feedback that goes beyond the form and grammatical aspects of written work. Nevertheless, while several decades of research conducted on writing instruction and teacher feedback situated within the tenets of process theories emphasize its positive influence on the development of EFL students’ writing skills, it appears that in Polish secondary school education EFL writing is largely mar…

Automated Checking of Flexible Mathematical Reasoning in the Case of Systems of (In)Equations and the Absolute Value Operator

2021

We present an approach and a tool for automatically providing feedback on solutions that involve complicated reasoning patterns. Currently the tool supports linear systems of equations and inequations that may also contain the absolute value operator and a restricted form of rational functions. This suffices for designing problems that are laborious to solve with standard mechanical procedures, but much easier using short-cuts that students may find by creative thinking. Earlier research has found that struggling with important mathematics promotes conceptual development. Our goal is to encourage students to such struggling. A crucial feature is to give them great freedom to choose the path…

Processing and effectiveness of formative feedback to increase comprehension and learning of conceptual knowledge in digital environments

2019

Active disturbance rejection control of linear induction motor

2017

This paper proposes the theoretical framework and the experimental application of the active disturbance rejection control to linear induction motors. Such a nonlinear control (ADRC) technique can be viewed as a particular kind of input-output linearization control, where the nonlinear transformation of the state is not computed by means of the model, but it is estimated online. Such an approach permits to cope with unmodelling dynamics, as well as uncertainty in the knowledge of the model parameters and exogenous disturbances. The effectiveness of the proposed ADRC control law has been verified both by numerical simulations and experimentally on a suitably developed test setup. Moreover, t…

Engaging with feedback: How do students remediate errors on their weekly quiz

2018

International audience; Maths for Business is a first-year mathematics module for approximately 500 non-mathematics specialists. It has continuous assessment consisting of ten weekly quizzes, worth 40% of the final mark. In 2016/17, students who did not receive the maximum five marks on their weekly quiz were offered the opportunity to resubmit their quiz, with correction(s) and an explanation of their error(s), for one additional mark. We refer to this process as ‘remediation'. In this paper, we examine how students remediate their errors in order to identify features of a ‘good' remediation. These features are identification, description, and correction of errors. By analysing a subset of…

Återbesök till feedback : en fallstudie av fokus och form på webbkursen Hjälpis

2017

Tämän maisterintutkielman tutkimuskohteena on palaute Jyväskylän yliopiston Kielikeskuksen valinnaisella ruotsin Hjälpis-verkkokurssilla. Tutkintovaatimuksiin pakollisena kuuluvan toisen kotimaisen kielen, ruotsin taitojen osoittamisen KORU-arviointikriteerien B1-tasolla on aikaisemmissa tutkimuksissa arvioitu olevan haaste riittämättömien taitojen takia jopa puolelle yliopisto-opiskelijoista.

2021

Reading and understanding what we read is an essential demand of our society nowadays. Everywhere we go we are meant to understand information set all around us in very different formats and displays with also very different purposes. For example, some daily activities that require reading and understanding are checking a pay sheet, verifying the terms and conditions of a promotion or searching for information about a recent news. As we can see, reading comprehension requires not only understanding single words and sentences but moreover implies constructing and understanding language representations at different levels (phonological, semantic, syntactic, and thematic) (Graesser, 2007). The…

ICAnDoiT: the impact of computerised adaptive corrective feedback on L2 English learners

2016

The present dissertation examines the impact of (computerised) adaptive corrective feedback, that is, feedback dynamically adapting to learners’ abilities, in English as a second/foreign language (L2) and explores the ways to maximise this impact. The study was inspired by the sociocultural perspective on development, which had implications for the interpretation of the results, including those obtained through statistical data analyses. The dissertation comprises five articles and a synthesis. In the first article, a positive effect of adaptive corrective feedback on the learners’ ability to formulate L2 English wh-questions is established. The second article explores how learners’ beliefs…
