The respiratory gas values of the fetal and maternal blood in cartesian nomograms

Respiratory gas values of maternal and fetal blood taken at delivery are represented in two Cartesian nomograms. They are based on data, published by vogel, fischer und thews (1965) and Fischer, Vogel und Thews (1965). The nomograms depict the interdependence of O2 pressure, O2 content, CO2 pressure and CO2 content, established by the O2 and CO2 dissociation curves, as well as by the Bohr effect and the Haldane effect. If two of the values are known, the remaining ones can be read from the nomograms.

Pollutant concentrations in placenta.

Unborn children are exposed to environmental pollutants via the placenta, and there is a causal relationship between maternal intake of pollutants and fetal exposure. Placental examination is an effective way for acquiring data for estimating fetal exposure. We analyzed the concentrations of 104 congeners of persistent organic pollutants, seven organotin compounds, five heavy metals, and methylmercury in 130 randomly selected placentas. Additionally, we examined similarities between pollutant concentrations by analyzing correlations between their placental concentrations. Oxidative stress in asphyxiated term infants resuscitated with 100% oxygen

Although room air is adequate for resuscitating asphyxiated newborn infants, guidelines recommend using 100% oxygen. Hyperoxemia, as has been noted in animal studies, could cause delayed breathing, increased oxygen consumption, and disordered cerebral circulation. In addition, 100% oxygen has caused prolonged oxidation of blood glutathione in neonates. In this study, 51 asphyxiated neonates born at term were randomly assigned to resuscitation with room air (RAR) and 55 to resuscitation with 100% oxygen (OxR). Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stromal cells (WJ-MSCs) have been recently exploited as a feeder layer in coculture systems to expand umbilical cord blood–hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (UCB-HSPCs). Here, we investigated the role of WJ-MSCs in supporting ex vivo UCB-HSPC expansion either when cultured in direct contact (DC) with WJ-MSCs or separated by a transwell system or in the presence of WJ-MSC–conditioned medium. Atrial Natriuretic Peptide presence in parotid gland of human fetus at 13th week of development and in adult man

Our immunohistochemical study shows that atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is present in both human fetal and adult parotid gland. In the fetuses ANP is localized in cell clusters, while in adult parotid gland, the ANP is seen only in the wall of intra- and extralobular ducts. The results suggest that ANP might play a role in the differentiation of the parotid gland similarly as in brain and that during fetal growth ANP may play a role in the regulating the secretion of primitive salivary fluid, even if acini are still not developed.
