Dynamics of the transition from polarization disorder to antiphase polarization domains in vector fiber lasers

2014

We demonstrate that nonlinear polarization coupling in a fiber ring laser without polarization-selective elements, subject to the effects of average anomalous dispersion, Kerr effect, and nonlinear gain saturation, can lead to the antisynchronization of spatiotemporal chaos into a wide variety of ordered laminar states of orthogonal polarization temporal domains. These antiphase polarization domains include stable lattices of soliton trains with high duty cycle at repetition rates of hundreds of MHz, as well as sparse trains of coupled dark and bright solitary waves.

Statistical characterization of the internal structure of noiselike pulses using a nonlinear optical loop mirror

2016

Abstract In this work we study statistically the internal structure of noiselike pulses generated by a passively mode-locked fiber laser. For this purpose, we use a technique that allows estimating the distribution of the amplitudes of the sub-pulses in the bunch. The technique takes advantage of the fast response of the optical Kerr effect in a fiber nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). It requires the measurement of the energy transfer characteristic of the pulses through the NOLM, and the numerical resolution of a system of nonlinear algebraic equations. The results yield a strongly asymmetric distribution, with a high-amplitude tail that is compatible with the existence of extreme-inte…

Coherent effects in the multimode dynamics of inhomogeneously broadened ring lasers

2004

We investigate under which conditions coherent effects manifest in the multimode dynamics of inhomogeneously broadened ring lasers. In particular, we demonstrate that for long enough cavities standard rate equations for class-B lasers fail in describing the multimode dynamics.

One-Loop Effective Lagrangian in QED

2020

Our main goal in this section is the derivation of an expression for the effective Lagrangian in one-loop approximation. So let’s start with the vacuum persistence amplitude in presence of an external field: $$\displaystyle \langle 0_+\vert 0_-\rangle ^A = e^{ iW^{(1)}[A]} = e^{i \int d^4x\mathcal {L}^{(1)}(x)} $$

Light-by-light polarization control for telecommunication applications

2010

In this work, we report for the first time the experimental achievement of an all-fibered polarization attraction, which can occur in optical fibers at telecommunication wavelengths. More precisely, we have experimentally shown that is possible to all-optically control and stabilize the state of polarization of a 10 Gbit/s telecommunication signal through the injection of a counter-propagating control pump wave. Eye diagrams recordings and bit error rate measurements have shown that this new type of all-optical function, almost lossless and instantaneous has a promising potential for telecommunication applications.

Experiments on optical fiber interferometers and laser modes

1992

Three experiments on optical fiber interferometers, suitable for a teaching laboratory, are described. The guiding characteristics of single mode optical fibers enable simple interferometry experiments with large path differences to be carried out easily. These experiments show that the fringe visibility exhibits a periodic dependence on the path difference when using a multilongitudinal mode HeNe laser. A simple model can be used to explain this dependence in terms of the mode spectrum of the laser.

Vector description of higher-order modes in photonic crystal fibers

2000

We extensively study the propagation features of higher-order modes in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Our analysis is based on a full-vector modal technique specially adapted to accurately describe light propagation in PCF's. Unlike conventional fibers, PCF's exhibit a somewhat unusual mechanism for the generation of higher-order modes. Accordingly, PCF's are characterized by the constancy of the number of modes below a wavelength threshold. An explicit verification of this property is given through a complete analysis of the dispersion relations of higher-order modes in terms of the structural parameters of this kind of fiber. The transverse irradiance distributions for some of these high…

Observation of induced modulational polarization instabilities and pulse-train generation in the normal-dispersion regime of a birefringent optical f…

1998

Four-photon mixing in a low-birefringence fiber is strongly influenced by the orientation of the pump and signal waves with respect to the fiber axes. We experimentally investigated the dependence of the modulational gain spectra on pump power and polarization by mixing orthogonal pump and probe light beams in a birefringent optical fiber. With a pump on the fast fiber axis, a cascade of sidebands was generated in the regime of normal fiber dispersion. These sidebands are shown to correspond to 0.2–0.3-THz trains of pulses with complex polarization profiles. The analysis reveals that, at particular values of the input pump and probe powers and signal frequency detuning, trains of dark-solit…

Self-referenced phase reconstruction proposal of Ghz bandwidth non-periodical optical pulses by in-fiber semi-differintegration

2011

Abstract We propose two new techniques able to retrieve the phase profile of a given temporal optical pulse based on the use of in-fiber semi-differintegral operators, where by semi-differintegration we mean either a 0.5th-order differentiation or integration. In both cases, the signal's temporal phase can be obtained by simple dividing two temporal intensity profiles, namely the intensities of the input and output pulses of a spectrally shifted semi-differintegral operator. In both cases, we obtained simple analytical expressions for the phase profile. The techniques are self-referenced and well-suited for real-time applications. We numerically prove the viability of these proposals.
