Effects of combined hormone replacement therapy or its effective agents on the IGF-1 pathway in skeletal muscle.
2010
Objectives To investigate the effects of combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and its effective agents on the IGF-1 signaling pathway. Design and methods To examine the effects of HRT on skeletal muscle in vivo, we utilized pre- and post-intervention samples from a randomized double blinded trial with 50–57-year-old women. The intervention included the year-long use of either HRT preparation (2 mg 17β-estradiol, E2; 1 mg norethisterone acetate, NETA, n = 10) or placebo (CO, n = 9). Microarray technology and quantitative PCR (qPCR) were used to study the expression of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-1) and its splice variants as well as IGF-1 receptor, Akt1, mTOR, FOXO1, FOXO3, atrog…
Influence of Oral Contraceptive Use on Adaptations to Resistance Training
2019
Introduction: The majority of young women use oral contraceptives (OCs). Use of OCs has been associated with lower myofibrillar protein and tendon collagen synthesis rates, but it is unknown whether OCs will limit the adaptive response of myotendinous tissue to resistance training. Design and Methods: Fourteen healthy untrained young regular OC users (24 +/- 1 years, fat% 32 +/- 1, 35 +/- 2 ml.min(-1).kg(-1)) and 14 NOC users (non-OC, controls) (24 +/- 1 years, fat% 32 +/- 2, 34 +/- 2 ml.min(-1).kg(-1)) performed a 10-week supervised lower extremity progressive resistance training program. Before and after the intervention biopsies from the vastus lateralis muscle and the patellar tendon we…
Spectroscopic Properties of Holmium-Aluminum- Germanium Co-doped Silica Fiber
2020
We report the basic spectroscopic properties of a home-made holmium-aluminum-germanium co-doped silica fiber, designed for laser applications. We present the ground-state and excitedstate absorption spectra of the fiber along with the upconversion emission spectrum under laser action, which served for making an energy levels’ diagram of Ho3+ ion. We discuss the ways to assess the kinetics of Ho3+ 2-μm fluorescence, focusing on measuring fluorescence lifetime from 5I7 level and nonradiative decay time from 5I6 level. The simple analytical formulae, applicable for fitting of the fluorescence decay curve, are derived, which can be useful for precise modeling of holmiumdoped fiber lasers. PID20…
Experimental Analysis of the Thermal Performance of Wood Fiber Insulating Panels
2023
During the last decades, attention to energy and environmental problems has significantly grown, along with the development of international and national policies addressing sustainability issues. In the construction sector, one of the most widespread energy efficiency strategies consists of thermal insulation of buildings thanks to external insulating panels. Among these, wood fiber is an insulating material characterized by a natural, eco-sustainable and biodegradable structure, coming from the recycling of waste wood from sawmills. The present study aimed to characterize small test building insulated with wood fiber panels from the thermal point of view, comparing the results with those …
Some recent results on the compressive and flexural behaviour of composite members
2005
Experiemntal results from compression and flexural tests on steel tubulare columns having circular or rectangular transverse cross-section and infilled with plain or fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) are analysez. for composite members differenti lengths and different dimensions of transverse cross-section were considered in order to assess the influence on behavior in flexure and in compression. The fiber investigated with different percentage were syntetic, carbon and deformed steel fibers. The constituent materials were characterised through compressive and split tests on conconcrete cylinders. Load.shortning and load-delection curves were determined including the sotnening response. Simpli…
Socioemotional wealth in family business research: A systematic literature review on its definition, roles and dimensions
2022
This study aims to depict the current state of research on socioemotional wealth (SEW) in family businesses considering its definitions, roles, and dimensions. Using the SPAR-4-SLR protocol (Paul, Lim, O’Cass, Hao, & Bresciani, 2021), we develop a systematic review of literature on SEW covering 74 studies published between 2007 and 2022. We propose a comprehensive definition of SEW based on four nonfinancial aspects and an association model that reviews the roles of SEW as an antecedent, a consequence, or a moderator. We also offer a new conceptual model for SEW comprising a general dimension and ten specific dimensions to facilitate empirical inquiries into areas beyond those considered by…
Characterisation of Fibre Glass Panels for Naval Use
2004
This work examines the characteristic of fiber glass composite panels constructed by Cantieri Arturo Stabile in Trapani (Italy): composite materials are very used in the naval applications, where high stiffness and resistance are required with reduced weight. Experimental tests are executed following ASTM or UNI EN rules, in particular the shear test is executed using a rig constructed to the purpose, designed following the rule ASTM D 4255-83. Besides the tests were simulated by analytical methods, by means of Cadec software and numerically by FEM software as Altair Hyperworks and Ansys, to evidence the error range of the experimental test and to obtain the configuration that can give suit…
Soliton solutions for an higher order nonlinear Schroedinger equation in optical fiber
2008
The new improvements to increase the bit rate in optical fiber require the propagation of pulse whose temporal width is always lesser. This causes the presence of further terms, linear and nonlinear, in the evolution equation of the pulse. The analysis on the complete integrability of the evolution equation, in a fiber optics with local properties and achieved in a previous paper, is improved dealing with the normal dispersion case, which allows the dark soliton propagation. In the last section special efforts are made to propose some interesting soliton solutions both bright and dark.

Performance analysis of dual-pump nonlinear amplifying loop mirror mode-locked all-fibre laser
2019
We numerically characterise, in the three-dimensional space of adjustable cavity parameters, the performance of a recently reported layout of a flexible figure-8 laser having two independently pumped segments of active fibre in its bidirectional ring (Smirnov et al 2017 Opt. Lett. 42 1732–5). We show that this optimisation problem can be efficiently addressed by applying a regression model based on a neural-network algorithm.
