High-density polyethylene facial implants show surface oxidation in SEM and EDX examination: a pilot study.

Previous histopathological studies on explanted Medpor high-density polyethylene (HDPE) facial implants indicated signs of material destruction and claimed to observe phagocytized HDPE particles within the tissue samples beside the usual type IV reaction with severe fibrosis. We examined new and explanted Medpor material with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The implant surface of three patient-derived specimens showed significantly higher oxygenation in EDX analysis and morphological changes in SEM compared to the new unused material directly after opening of the package and after 1 year of exposure to air. Abstract In an attempt to investigate cellular fibronectin synthesis and deposition during acute liver damage and fibrogenesis, we used the presence of the additional type III-related ED-A domain of cellular fibronectin as a characteristic for distinguishing it from the plasma form. Using site-specific antibodies, we localized cellular fibronectin deposition in the necrotic pericentral areas of acutely damaged liver tissue after a single CCl 4 -gavage, whereas in control liver only trace amounts of cellular fibronectin were detectable along the sinusoids. ABSTRACT We report the isolation of thymidine-dependent small-colony variants (TD-SCVs) of Staphylococcus aureus from unusual infection sites of patients with chronic soft tissue infection, tympanitis, bronchitis, peritonitis, and septicemia. Furthermore, we provide evidence that the essential growth factor for TD-SCVs, i.e., thymidine, and its metabolite dTMP are present in various human specimens.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE MYELOFIBROSIS: is an infrequent chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm. We aimed to describe the clinico-biological characteristics, treatment, and evolutive course of myelofibrosis patients in Spain.; MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 1,000 patients from the Spanish Registry of Myelofibrosis diagnosed with primary (n=641) or secondary (n=359) myelofibrosis were analysed.; RESULTS: Median age was 68 years. The frequency of constitutional symptoms, moderate to severe anaemia (Hb<10g/dL), and symptomatic splenomegaly was 35%, 36%, and 17%, respectively.
