Alcohol, tobacco and drug use among young people: a study of recent Spanish teen series (2015-2021)

2022

2018

Quite often fantastic literature has been studied using ideas from theoretical physics in order to verify how the development of the latter modifies the reader's perception of the former. Instead, this article proposes the opposite: this article will explore theoretical physics using the ideas from the fantastic. The core principle here is that both reflect on the reality and fracture it, changing the reader's reality paradigm. While physics changes it from reality, using to it the principles of the mathematics, the fantastic does this using (and fracturing) a fictional space.

A Dominant Global Translation Strategy in Thai Translated Novels : The Translations of Religious Markers in Dan Brown’s Thriller Novels

2020

When translation is considered as an integral part of larger social systems (Even-Zohar 1990), the ways in which translations are produced to serve readers’ specificity could be affected. This paper examines whether there is a preference for a specific global translation strategy due to a readership that is specialized in terms of education level. Adopting Venuti’s (1995/2008) division of global translation strategies into exoticizing and domesticating translation, it examines the frequency of local translation strategies, which are part of a global translation strategy, used in translating English-Thai religious markers in Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, …

The Monster Analogy: Why Fictional Characters are Frankenstein's Monsters

2019

The Unwritten (2009–2015), a Vertigo comics series created by Mike Carey and Peter Gross, demonstrates through metafictional storytelling that all fictional characters share important features with Victor Frankenstein’s infamous creature: they are simultaneously synthetic and mimetic, human and nonhuman, textual and transtextual, crafted to serve specific functions, yet difficult to control. This article explores how structuralist, cognitivist and emerging transtextual theories of literary characters have attempted to grasp and reconcile these paradoxical qualities. This allegorical cross-reading highlights previously ignored points of connection between different theories, forming a basis …

SULLA FIABA E SULLA LETTERATURA PER L'INFANZIA A PROPOSITO DI ALCUNI LIBRI

2023

Introduction: Uncertain Biographies? A Focus on Migrants’ Life Courses

2018

This book focuses on the uncertainties revealed by migrants’ biographies whose shapes are less conventional or patterned, while their family, work, and educational careers are simultaneously more fragmented and intermingled. As Gardner (Age, Narrative and Migration: The Life Course and Life Histories of Bengali Elders in London. Oxford: Berg Publishers, 2002) contends, there is a more pressing need to address the meaning and shape of life course in migrants’ case. The chapters ask therefore: What challenges migrants and returnees face when trying to make sense of their life courses after years of experience in other countries with different age norms and cultural values? How can they reconc…

Intentional Engagement in the Transition to Adulthood

2018

Abstract. During the transition to adulthood, young people need to choose their career and overall life pathway and cope successfully with the transitions they face. The theories of personal identity development ( Luyckx, Goossens, Soenens, & Beyers, 2006 ; Luyckx et al., 2008 ), career development ( Savickas, 2005 ), and goal developmental regulation ( Nurmi, 2004 ; Salmela-Aro, 2009 ) address the question of how people commit and engage in the changes faced during the transition from adolescence to adulthood, and particularly how they deal with educational and occupational transitions. We reviewed how each of these theories discusses both adaptive and maladaptive processes during the…

The coupling between face and emotion recognition from early adolescence to young adulthood

2020

Abstract In the present study, we investigated whether differentiation occurs between identity and emotion processing as development in both domains proceeds across adolescence and during the transition into young adulthood. A sample of 343 participants between 11 and 24 years performed the Glasgow Face Matching Task ( Burton, White, & McNeill, 2010 ) for identity-based face recognition and the Cambridge Face-Battery ( Golan, Baron-Cohen, & Hill, 2006 ) for complex emotion recognition. Our results show adult levels of face recognition by the end of early adolescence, while complex emotion recognition continues to develop into young adulthood. Although each ability matures at different rate,…
