Measurement of the Fluctuations in the Number of Muons in Extensive Air Showers with the Pierre Auger Observatory
2021
The successful installation, commissioning, and operation of the Pierre Auger Observatory would not have been possible without the strong commitment and effort from the technical and administrative staff in Malargue. We are very grateful to the following agencies and organizations for financial support: Argentina-Comision Nacional de Energia Atomica, Agencia Nacional de Promocion Cientifica y Tecnologica (ANPCyT), Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Tecnicas (CONICET), Gobierno de la Provincia de Mendoza, Municipalidad de Malargue, NDM Holdings and Valle Las Lenas; in gratitude for their continuing cooperation over land access; Australia-the Australian Research Council; Brazil…
„Ekumenizm cierpienia” na przykładzie historii procesji suplikacyjnej do Sanktuarium Matki Bożej „na Pólku” pod Bralinem w XIX i XX wieku
2018
Trudne historyczne wydarzenia związane z pojawieniem się reformacji na ziemi bralińsko-kępińskiej były przyczyną wielu cierpień i uprzedzeń. Kościoły katolicki i ewangelicki zwalczały się nawzajem, zamykały świątynie, wypędzały duchownych. Taki stan rzeczy istniał do doświadczenia klęski żywiołowej związanej z dwukrotnym całkowitym pożarem miasteczka Bralin w latach 1807 i 1808. To doświadczenie wspólnego cierpienia doprowadziło do zorganizowania przez ocalałych z pożarów wiernych Kościoła Rzymskokatolickiego i Ewangelicko-Augsburskiego procesji suplikacyjnej. Wspólna procesja suplikacyjna doprowadziła do pogodzenia się wiernych obu Kościołów i wspólnej odbudowy miasteczka. To doświadczenie…
Charge radii of exotic potassium isotopes challenge nuclear theory and the magic character of N = 32
2020
Nuclear charge radii are sensitive probes of different aspects of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and the bulk properties of nuclear matter; thus, they provide a stringent test and challenge for nuclear theory. The calcium region has been of particular interest, as experimental evidence has suggested a new magic number at $N = 32$ [1-3], while the unexpectedly large increases in the charge radii [4,5] open new questions about the evolution of nuclear size in neutron-rich systems. By combining the collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy method with $\beta$-decay detection, we were able to extend the charge radii measurement of potassium ($Z =19$) isotopes up to the exotic $^{52}$K ($t_{1…
Proces starzenia się ludności a możliwości kreowania miejsc pracy i nowych kierunków kształcenia na podstawie badania sytuacji osób starszych, któryc…
2016
EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF DILUTE SOLID-LIQUID SUSPENSION IN AN UNBAFFLED STIRRED VESSELS BY A NOVEL PULSED LASER BASED IMAGE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE
2009
The availability of experimental information on solid distribution inside stirred tanks is a topic of great importance in several industrial applications. The measurement of solid particle distribution in turbulent multiphase flow is not simple and the development of suitable measurement techniques is still in progress. In this work a novel non-intrusive technique for measuring particle concentration fields in solid-liquid systems is employed. The technique makes use of a laser sheet, a high sensitivity digital camera for image acquisition and a Matlab procedure for post-processing the acquired images. Experimental data are here obtained for the case of an unbaffled stirred tank. Stable tor…
Impact of Farmland Abandonment on Water Resources and Soil Conservation in Citrus Plantations in Eastern Spain
2019
Due to the reduction in the prices of oranges on the market and social changes such as the ageing of the population, traditional orange plantation abandonment in the Mediterranean is taking place. Previous research on land abandonment impact on soil and water resources has focused on rainfed agriculture abandonment, but there is no research on irrigated land abandonment. In the Valencia Region&mdash
Searches for lepton number violation and resonances in K± → πμμ decays
2017
The NA48/2 experiment at CERN collected a large sample of charged kaon decays to final states with multiple charged particles in 2003–2004. A new upper limit on the rate of the lepton number violating decay K±→π∓μ±μ± is reported: B(K±→π∓μ±μ±)<8.6×10−11 at 90% CL. Searches for two-body resonances X in K±→πμμ decays (such as heavy neutral leptons N4 and inflatons χ ) are also presented. In the absence of signals, upper limits are set on the products of branching fractions B(K±→μ±N4)B(N4→πμ) and B(K±→π±X)B(X→μ+μ−) for ranges of assumed resonance masses and lifetimes. The limits are in the (10−11,10−9) range for resonance lifetimes below 100 ps.
Polarization of the spontaneous magnetic field and magnetic fluctuations in s+is anisotropic multiband superconductors
2018
We show that multiband superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry can produce spontaneous currents and magnetic fields in response to the local variations of pairing constants. Considering the iron pnictide superconductor Ba1−xKxFe2As2 as an example we demonstrate that both the point-group symmetric s+is state and the C4-symmetry-breaking s+id states produce, in general, the same magnitudes of spontaneous magnetic fields. In the s+is state these fields are polarized mainly on an ab crystal plane, whereas in the s+id state their ab-plane and c-axis components are of the same order. The same is true for the random magnetic fields which are produced by the order parameter fluctuations …
Somatosensory evoked fields after exercise induced pain
2017
The amount of research utilizing magnetoencephalography (MEG) has increased within the last few decades because of the development and better availability of equipment. With MEG, different areas of brain functionality can be studied in a variety of tasks and pathologies. Somatosensory evoked fields (SEF) are magnetic fields generated by tens of thousands of neurons firing in the primary somatosensory cortex. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to study the modulation of SEFs after exercise induced pain. The study was carried out in Jyväskylä Centre for Interdisciplinary Brain Research (CIBR). The study subjects (N=18, male 10, female 8) were healthy and suitable for MEG measurements. Dat…
Assessing the case of Dengue in Argentina 2009: discrimination and fear
2010
After almost a decade, the re-appearance of Dengue in Argentina caused panic and fears. Unlike Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay where policies of preventions have been followed, the future of dengue is uncertain for Argentina; this paper does not have any political affiliation but emphasizes the role that mass media play in the coverage of epidemics. The question as to whether a newspaper or mass media corporation should maintain a minimum of objectivity is too complex to be resolved in this short article. However, we have so far set forth a model which will help other researchers to interpret topics of this nature in the future. In moments of disorder, uncertainty or disaster, societies experi…
