Friction Stir Knead Welding of steel aluminium butt joints

2008

To develop steel aluminium-tailored hybrids in a butt joint for sheets in a thickness of about 1 mm conventional Friction Stir Welding is not feasible due to a high distortion of the welded specimen. Contrary to Friction Stir Welding the tool used for Friction Stir Knead Welding has no pin wherefore higher welding speeds can be realised. Due to the fact that this is a newer process, applied for patent in 2005, the cut contours of the edges and their variations have to be optimised by numerical analysis to transfer a maximum of load in order to improve the formability. The examined materials in this paper are steel DC04, as well as the aluminium alloys AA5182 and AA6016 in sheet thicknesses …

Unsteadiness and transition to turbulence in woven spacer filled channels for Membrane Distillation

2017

To characterize the performance of Membrane Distillation (MD) modules, channels filled with woven spacers were investigated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (including Direct Numerical Simulations and the use of the SST k-ω turbulence model) and by parallel experiments with Thermochromic Liquid Crystals. The cases considered here regard mutually orthogonal filaments with a spacer pitch to channel height ratio P/H=2, two spacer orientations θ with respect to the main flow (0° and 45°), and bulk Reynolds numbers Re from ∼200 to ∼2000, an interval of great interest in practical MD applications. For both values of θ, CFD predicted steady-state flow for Re up to ∼300, and chaotic flow …

Flexural properties of the epoxy resin filled with single and hybrid carbon nanofillers

2020

Abstract The aim of this paper was to estimate the effect of moisture and temperature on the flexural properties of the epoxy filled with single and hybrid carbon nanofillers (CNTs and CNFs) and to reveal the most environmentally stable NC. Water absorption at 70 °C until equilibrium moisture content and heating at 70 °C for 4 weeks were followed by freezing at -20 °C for 8 weeks. Microstructural characterization of optical images revealed homogeneous dispersion of all carbon nanofillers in the epoxy resin at microscale. Positive nanofiller effects were found for sorption, flexural and thermophysical characteristics of the epoxy resin. The most environmentally stable NC was epoxy filled wit…

Experimental investigation of two-side heat transfer in spacer-filled channels

2020

Abstract In Membrane Distillation (MD), spacers support the membranes and promote mixing, thus reducing temperature polarization. Their efficient design requires a knowledge of the distribution of the local heat transfer coefficient h and of its dependence on Reynolds number, spacer geometry and flow-spacer relative orientation. In previous work, we applied Thermochromic Liquid Crystals (TLC) and digital image processing to the measurement of h distributions for different spacer configurations; data were used to validate CFD simulations and select turbulence models. For constructive reasons, the test section allowed only one-side heat transfer, while in most MD configurations (e.g. spiral-w…

Infilled frames: Developments in the evaluation of cyclic behaviour under lateral loads

2005

In order to consider the modified seismic response of framed structures in the presence of masonry infills, proper models have to be formulated. Because of the complexity of the problem, a careful definition of an equivalent diagonal pin-jointed strut, able to represent the horizontal force-interstorey displacement cyclic law of the actual infill, may be a solution. In this connection the present paper, continuing a previous work in which a generalised criterion for the determination of the ideal cross-section of the equivalent strut was formulated, analizes some models known in literature for the prediction of the lateral cyclic behaviour discussing their field of validity. As a support of…

Effect of fillers on the properties of recycled polymers

2003

The main problems in post-consumer plastics recycling are due to the degradation undergone during lifetime and during processing steps. Moreover, for heterogeneous recycling, the incompatibility among the different polymeric phases give rise to secondary materials with low mechanical and thermomechanical properties. The properties-reprocessing relationships are an important tool for determining not only the properties of the recycled polymers but also the strategies to apply (processing conditions, stabilisers, fillers, compatibilizers, etc) in order to obtain recycled polymers with good mechanical properties. In this work the effect of adding inert fillers and modifier agents to recycled p…

Analysis of local shear effects in brick masonry infilled RC frames

2013

Masonry infills panels placed among framed structures meshes have a relevant influence in presence seismic actions in terms of strength stiffness and global displacement capacity. In the case of RC structures, the modifications of internal forces due to infill-frame interaction may be not compatible with surrounding frame members strength especially considering additional shear forces arising at the ends of beams and columns in contact with the panel under lateral actions. Such effects may be in many cases the cause of unexpected brittle collapse mechanisms which compromise the safety of the entire structure. In this paper by means of a double (micromodeling and macromodeling) procedure reg…

Empirical Equations for the Direct Definition of Stress–Strain Laws for Fiber-Section-Based Macromodeling of Infilled Frames

2018

Equivalent strut macromodels are largely used to model the influence of infill walls in frame structures due to their simplicity and effectiveness from a computational point of view. Despite these advantages, which are fundamental to carrying out seismic simulation of complex structures, equivalent struts are phenomenological models and therefore have to conventionally account for the influence of really large amounts of geometrical and mechanical variables with a relatively simple inelastic response. Mechanical approaches, generally used to evaluate the force-displacement curve of a strut, are based on hypothesizing the damage mechanism that will occur for an infill-frame system subject to…

Definition of a fiber macro-model for nonlinear analysis of infilled frames

2017

A common way to model infill-frame interaction is the use equivalent strut macromodels. In most cases these are compression only resistant truss elements defined with a multi-linear axial-force / axial-displacement law. The main difficulty in using this approach is to correctly calibrate such a force-displacement curve (slope of ascending and post-peak branches, critical yielding, peak and residual forces) because of the large number of variables (mechanical and elastic properties of materials) and the different possible damage mechanisms activated for the frame-infill system. Another possible way is using fiber-section elements as diagonal struts. In this case the force-displacement law is…

Macroelement Model for the Progressive-Collapse Analysis of Infilled Frames

2021

A new multistrut macromodel for the analysis of the progressive-collapse response of infilled reinforced concrete (RC) frames is presented in this paper. The model consists of three struts: two outer infinitely rigid and resistant struts and one inner fiber-section strut. The inclination of the struts as well as the stress-strain response are modulated by two parameters that are obtained by means of analytical correlations provided in the paper. The latter link the geometric and mechanical properties of an infilled frame to the geometric configuration and mechanical response of the equivalent strut model. This confers the model the capability to adapt to consider different collapse configur…
