High-order services and spatial change in the central and eastern European countries

2004

This paper examines the level of high-order services in the CEECs. These services are of growing strategic importance across the whole range of production sectors in developed economies (Bailly and Coffey, 1994). They are both the cause and the consequence of globalization, in a cumulative process. It is through high-order services that large cities, and the regions around them, become closely interconnected within global networks. These services are fundamental features both in the changing pattern of regional disparities across an enlarged EU and in the process of metropolization (Bourdeau-Lepage, 2004a and Bourdeau-Lepage Huriot, 2002 and 2004). The development of high-order services wil…

Retuning the Nordic Welfare Municipality: Central Regulation of Social Care under Change in Finland

2011

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyse the changes that have taken place in the central regulation of social care in Finland since the 1970s. The changes in vertical central‐local relations are discussed in the context of economic and welfare state development.Design/methodology/approach – The paper is a case study, applying the concept of “the Nordic welfare municipality” to the case of Finland. With this concept, the author refers to the inherently contradictory character of the Nordic model of welfare governance: to a system that emphasises local self‐government but that, at the same time, perceives regional harmonisation as imperative.Findings – After strong central control d…

Presidentialisation on the executive arena at the local level? The case of Norway 1992–2012

2016

It is empirically contested whether the phenomenon of presidentialisation, i.e. the concentration of power around the leading political positions in non-presidential systems, is taking place or not. This study sets out to investigate whether presidentialisation on the executive arena takes place in a collegial political system, more specifically in Norwegian municipalities. Using several independent empirical data in the period from 1992 to 2012, the main conclusion is that there are few traces of presidentialisation on the Norwegian local level. However, there are tendencies towards political concentration in the sense that political power is centralised in the political elite. Rather than…

Aggregate Behavior and Microdata

2004

Abstract It is shown how one can effectively use microdata in modelling the change over time in an aggregate (e.g. mean consumption expenditure) of a large and heterogeneous population. The starting point of our aggregation analysis is a specification of explanatory variables on the micro-level. Typically, some of these explanatory variables are observable and others are unobservable. Based on certain hypotheses on the evolution over time of the joint distributions across the population of these explanatory variables we derive a decomposition of the change in the aggregate which allows a partial analysis: to isolate and to quantify the effect of a change in the observable explanatory variab…

Microfinance

2013

This chapter gives the reader an introduction to microfinance and reports how the industry has moved from generally being praised to increasingly being criticized. Particularly, the chapter addresses the concern that microfinance institutions chase profits and are moving away from the poor-customer segments. The authors' findings indicate that rather than being an industry with high profits, the industry struggles with high costs and low earnings. They also find that the focus on serving poor customers did not change over time. Thus, the ‘mission drift’ claim cannot be confirmed.

Exchange rates expectations and chaotic dynamics: a replication study

2018

Abstract In this paper the author analyzes the behavior of exchange rates expectations for four currencies, by considering a re-calculation and an extension of Resende and Zeidan (Expectations and chaotic dynamics: empirical evidence on exchange rates, Economics Letters, 2008). Considering Lyapunov exponent-based tests results, they are not supportive of chaos in exchange rates expectations, although the so-called 0–1 test strongly supports the chaos hypothesis.

Contagion in Bitcoin Networks

2019

12 pages, 6 figures. Paper accepted in 2nd Workshop on Blockchain and Smart Contract Technologies (BSCT 2019), workshop satellite of 22nd International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2019); International audience; We construct the Google matrices of bitcoin transactions for all year quarters during the period of January 11, 2009 till April 10, 2013. During the last quarters the network size contains about 6 million users (nodes) with about 150 million transactions. From PageRank and CheiRank probabilities, analogous to trade import and export, we determine the dimensionless trade balance of each user and model the contagion propagation on the network assuming that a user go…
