Monetary Policy from a Circuitist Perspective

2007

As Arestis says, circuit theory is ‘a strong component of the endogenous money thesis’ (1996: 113). This notably means that circuitists endorse the original Post Keynesian dismissal of the orthodox Monetarist approach to monetary policy by which the quantity of money in the economy should be regulated so as to stifle inflationary pressures. From the endogenous view, money creation is, in Moore’s words (1988), ‘credit-driven’, meaning that money is demanded by the general public and firms to finance spending which is dependent upon prices and money wages. Hence it is prices and money wages that are factors determining the amount of money created and not the contrary. This led Post Keynesian …

Understanding the shortcomings of commodity-based technology in input-output models: an economic-circuit approach

2004

International audience; The Make-Use Model serves as a basis for most national accounting systems as the System of National Accounts (SNA) and is acknowledged as the most suitable model for interregional analysis. Two hypotheses are traditionally made featuring either industry-based technologies (IBT) or commodity-based technologies (CBT). While industry-based technologies can be easily interpreted in terms of a demand-driven economic circuit, it will be shown that: (1) commodity-based technologies cannot be interpreted as a demand-driven economic circuit because this involves computing the inverse of a matrix (the matrix of industry output proportions), which is either impossible or genera…

Job seeker's spatial equilibrium in a fuzzy mathematical framework

1990

This paper incorporates complex behavior in a job seeking strategy model. Since the state of information is imperfect, a job seeker faces an imprecise labor market. His behavior is fuzzy and variable. It is shown how this complex behavior can be described by fuzzy subsets theory and bifurcation analysis. The latter examines the discontinuous phenomena. Then it is proved that a job seeker’s fuzzy equilibrium with a spatial constraint exists.

Geographical economics and regional integration (what lessons for Central and Eastern European countries ?)

1998

THIS PAPER AIMS TO SHOW HOW EU-INTEGRATION OF THE CENTRAL AND ORIENTAL EUROPEAN COUNTRIES WOULD MODIFY THE GROWTH OF EUROPEAN REGIONS. WE DEMONSTRATE THAT « NEW ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY » AND « NEW GROWTH THEORIES » TOGETHER ARE WELL SUITED TO UNDERSTAND AND EXPLAIN VARIOUS PHENOMENA ASSOCIATED WITH EUROPEAN INTEGRATION POLICIES. WE SHOW THAT THESE POLICIES WILL BE PROFITABLE TO GROWTH BUT WILL REINFORCE THE UROPEAN CORE-PERIPHERY GEOGRAPHIC PATTERN. WE ALSO SHOW THAT SOME MECANISMS COULD COUNTERACT THIS PATTERN OF UNEVEN DEVELOPMENT.

Mobilités internationales des diplômés de l'enseignement supérieur français en phase d'insertion professionnelle : effets sur leurs débuts de carrièr…

2008

International mobility by French higher education graduates on entering the labour market: is it worth it once they return home? The construction of European graduate labour market, through increased international graduate mobility, cannot take place without it appearing beneficial forgraduates. Indeed, all types of mobility have a cost, even if the latter is not always financial (leaving family, adapting to a new environment, etc.). Moreover, we can wonder whether graduates employment prospects actually improve thanks to international mobility. Using the Céreq « Génération 98 » survey, our first results show that international mobility on entering the labour market appears to be rare. Final…

The impact of scale effects on the prevailing internet-based banking model in the US

2011

Internet-based banks use a technology-intensive production process that may benefit from scale effects as they grow larger. This article analyzes whether the predominant Internet-primary bank in the USA generates technology-based economies of scale in the period 2002–2010. There is evidence of both favorable and adverse technology-based scale effects. As the leading Internet-primary bank gets larger, the financial performance gap with traditional banks shrinks while some of its critical competitive advantages wear down. The results suggest that unless the prevailing Internet-primary bank preserves the distinctive advantages of the Internet-based business model as it improves financial perfo…
