Abstract Aims The objective of the present study is to assess the prognostic value of acute kidney injury (AKI) in the evolution of patients with heart failure (HF) using real‐world data. Methods and results Patients with a diagnosis of HF and with serial measurements of renal function collected throughout the study period were included. Procalcitonin for the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis: what is the evidence?

Abstracts Procalcitonin is a widely used marker for the evaluation of infection and sepsis and to guide antibiotic therapy. During the last decade, several studies evaluated its role and diagnostic performance as a surrogate marker for the identification of Candida spp. in suspected invasive candidiasis. A low serum level and a favorable negative predictive value are the main findings for procalcitonin in this setting. The aim of this report is to provide an updated brief summary of the evidence supporting the use of PCT for the management of invasive candidiasis.

This review covers the role of ultrasonography as an essential non-invasive diagnostic approach when facing patients with anemia, a common clinical problem. Abdomen ultrasound is well recognized as a first-line examination in the setting of blood loss, both acute and chronic. Less is clear about the additional opportunities, given by ultrasound in anemia, due to the many other possible causes.

Although speech perception is also known to play a role in reading development, it is not clear which processes underlie this connection.
