Adipose Stromal/Stem Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles: Potential Next-Generation Anti-Obesity Agents

2022

Over the last decade, several compounds have been identified for the treatment of obesity. However, due to the complexity of the disease, many pharmacological interventions have raised concerns about their efficacy and safety. Therefore, it is important to discover new factors involved in the induction/progression of obesity. Adipose stromal/stem cells (ASCs), which are mostly isolated from subcutaneous adipose tissue, are the primary cells contributing to the expansion of fat mass. Like other cells, ASCs release nanoparticles known as extracellular vesicles (EVs), which are being actively studied for their potential applications in a variety of diseases. Here, we focused on the importance …

Adipokines in obesity and metabolic diseases

2020

Adipose tissue secretes many adipokines that regulate important physiological functions. Growing studies have highlighted that these bioactive molecules may contribute to the development of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Adipokines exert systemic metabolic effects and independent activity on numerous cells of the cardiovascular system, including cardiomyocytes and vascular cell walls. Adiponectin shows anti-inflammatory and anti-atherosclerotic activity on blood vessels. Conversely, resistin is endowed with pro-inflammatory effects and stimulates the proliferation of smooth muscle cells, thus promoting the development of atherosclerotic plaque. Leptin plays an important role in card…

Preventive Impact of Long-Term Ingestion of Chestnut Honey on Glucose Disorders and Neurodegeneration in Obese Mice

2022

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the impact of long-term honey ingestion on metabolic disorders and neurodegeneration in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Three groups of mice were fed with a standard diet (STD), HFD or HFD supplemented with honey (HFD-H) for 16 weeks. Biochemical, histological, Western blotting, RT-PCR and Profiler PCR array were performed to assess metabolic parameters, peripheral and central insulin resistance and neurodegeneration. Daily honey intake prevented the HFD-induced glucose dysmetabolism. In fact, it reduced plasma fasting glucose, insulin and leptin concentrations and increased adiponectin levels. It improved glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivi…

Nutritional quality of extra virgin olive oil determined by the application of a new functional matematic index

2015

The extra virgin olive oil is very important in the Mediterranean diet. From the nutritional point of view, the high energy content and an optimal ratio between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, together with the presence of minor compounds such as phenols and tocopherols and the related antioxidant capacity, confer to this product a high healthy value. The extra-virgin oil’s nutritional properties depend on the pedoclimatic conditions, cultivar and the production process. In the last years many studies have been performed to remark and describe the safety and nutritional quality of the extra-virgin olive oils but it is difficult to compare different parameters representative of oil’s n…

Correlation of Metabolic Syndrome with Redox Homeostasis Biomarkers: Evidence from High-Fat Diet Model in Wistar Rats

2022

Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is an extremely complex disease. A non-balanced diet such as high-fat diet (HFD) induces metabolic dysfunction that could modify redox homeostasis. We here aimed at exploring redox homeostasis in male Wistar rats, following 8 weeks of HFD, correlating the eventual modification of selected biomarkers that could be associated with the clinical manifestations of MetS. Therefore, we selected parameters relative to both the glucose tolerance and lipid altered metabolism, but also oxidative pattern. We assessed some biomarkers of oxidative stress i.e., thiols balance, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant barriers, via the use of specific biochemical assays, individuating e…

THE ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES OF PHENOLIC MOLECULES IN RELATIONSHIP WITH THE pH OF ENVIRONMENT REACTION

2011

THE ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES OF PHENOLIC MOLECULES IN RELATIONSHIP WITH THE pH OF ENVIRONMENT REACTION Some epidemiological evidence suggests beneficial effects on human health from a diet rich in fruit, vegetables and certain types of beverages such as tea and wine (1,2). These compounds do not have nutritive properties but they have a functional role in the human organism. Some studies have investigated the effect of pH on the antioxidant properties of polyphenols (3,4) and have reported that the pH-dependent behaviour is related to hydroxyl deprotonation. However, these studies did not compare the antioxidant activity of various classes of polyphenols and did not take into account the acid…

Planning and executing sequential motor acts in Parkinson Disease

1997

Many experimental evidences highlighted that Parkinson Disease (PD) patients are particularly impaired in performing a sequence of movements. In the present experiment we focused to study how PD patients plan and execute an action constituted by the sequence of reaching-grasping an object (first motor act) and placing it on a second target (second motor act). We wished to determine whether properties of the target of the second motor act influenced the kinematics of first motor act. The results showed that PD patients modified, as the controls, the initial ballistic phase of reaching according to variation of second target position (object extrinsic properties). In particular, peak accelera…

POSTNATAL DEVELOPMENTAL CHANGES IN ENTERIC DOPAMINERGIC SYSTEM

2013

The postnatal period is a key period of life, characterized by the maturation of various organs and in particular of the gut. Currently, we have a poor understanding of the development of neurological and endocrine factors that control intestinal motility. Such knowledge can provide indications about the potency, efficacy, or therapeutic range of a drug in premature infants. Dopaminegic antagonists are often used as prokinetic drugs to treat impaired GI propulsion, although the role of the enteric dopaminergic system in the control of intestinal motility in neonatal vs adult has not been adequately addressed. In this view the aim of this study, was to examine, the functionality of the dopam…

Haptic Perception in Extreme Obesity: qEEG Study Focused on Predictive Coding and Body Schema

2020

Haptic perception (HP) is a perceptual modality requiring manual exploration to elaborate the physical characteristics of external stimuli through multisensory integrative cortical pathways. Cortical areas exploit processes of predictive coding that collect sensorial inputs to build and update internal perceptual models. Modifications to the internal representation of the body have been associated with eating disorders. In the light of this, obese subjects were selected as a valid experimental model to explore predictive coding in haptic perception. To this purpose, we performed electroencephalographic (EEG) continuous recordings during a haptic task in normally weighted versus obese subjec…
