Osseous fixation of a penile prosthesis after transsexual phalloplasty: a case report.

1993

AbstractWe report on a patient who had undergone female-to-male transsexual surgery and subsequent phalloplasty by means of a free latissimus dorsi muscle graft with pudendal nerve coaptation elsewhere 10 years ago. The surgical strategy for implantation and osseous fixation of a penile prosthesis is described. We discuss whether the primary implantation of a penile prosthesis during 1-stage surgical phalloplasty is more advantageous in comparison with the currently favored secondary implantation. Phalloplasty should be represented by a 1-stage surgical procedure encompassing the creation of a neourethra, restoration of tactile and possibly erogenous sensibility, and implantation of a penil…

The effect of visual focus on spatio-temporal and kinematic parameters of treadmill running

2017

The characteristics of a treadmill and the environment where it is based could influence the user’s gaze and have an effect on their running kinematics and lower limb impacts. The aim of this study was to identify the effect of visual focus on spatio-temporal parameters and lower limb kinematics during treadmill running. Twenty six experienced runners ran at 3.33 m s−1 on a treadmill under two visual conditions, either looking ahead at a wall or looking down at the treadmill visual display. Spatio-temporal parameters, impact accelerations of the head and tibia, and knee and ankle kinematics were measured for the final 15 s of a 90 s bout of running under each condition. At the end of the te…

Imaging the visual autokinetic illusion with fMRI

2005

During fixation of a stationary, dim light-emitting diode (LED) in complete darkness, a subtle, apparent motion is perceived which is called autokinesis. This autokinetic illusion increases with increasing fixation time. Eleven healthy subjects were examined by fMRI while fixating an LED in darkness for 35 s. BOLD signal changes of the first and the second half of the fixation period were compared. While the stimulus was the same for both periods, perception differed in that autokinesis was more pronounced in the second half. This second half of the period was associated with bilateral activations in the motion-sensitive middle occipito-temporal area known as MT/V5. Our finding suggests tha…

Fixation suppression of optokinetic nystagmus modulates cortical visual-vestibular interaction.

2005

Water activation positron emission tomography and statistical group analysis were used to evaluate differences in activation-deactivation patterns during small-field visual motion stimulation, eliciting rightward optokinetic nystagmus and its fixation suppression in 12 healthy volunteers. Bilateral patterns of activation in the visual cortex, including the motion-sensitive area MT/V5, and deactivations in an assembly of vestibular areas (posterior insula, thalamus, anterior cingulate gyrus) during optokinetic nystagmus was markedly diminished or totally absent during its fixation suppression. This finding agrees with the concept of a reciprocal inhibitory interaction between the visual-opto…

Survival trends and predictors of mortality in severe pelvic trauma: estimates from the German Pelvic Trauma Registry Initiative.

2010

Abstract Study objective To determine longitudinal trends in mortality, and the contribution of specific injury characteristics and treatment modalities to the risk of a fatal outcome after severe and complex pelvic trauma. Methods We studied 5048 patients with pelvic ring fractures enrolled in the German Pelvic Trauma Registry Initiative between 1991 and 1993, 1998 and 2000, and 2004 and 2006. Complete datasets were available for 5014 cases, including 508 complex injuries, defined as unstable fractures with severe peri-pelvic soft tissue and organ laceration. Multivariable mixed-effects logistic regression analysis was employed to evaluate the impact of demographic, injury- and treatment-a…

Clavicle aseptic nonunion: is there a place for cortical allogenic strut graft?

2017

Abstract We investigated functional and radiological outcome in 57 cases of midshaft clavicle nonunion treated with open reduction and internal fixation with plate and screws over a 13 year-period. Intercalary bone graft was used in 42 patients; opposite autologous strut graft was used in 31 cases to provide mechanical support to the host bone. Patients were analysed using chart and radiological review and assessed with DASH questionnaire obtained at the latest follow-up. 37 patients were male while 20 were females, with a mean age of 35 years (63–17). All cases were of nonunion, 35 atrophic and 22 hypertrophic. The dominant side was injured in 32 cases and the non dominant in 25 cases. Pri…

Mentalizing eye contact with a face on a video : Gaze direction does not influence autonomic arousal

2018

Recent research has revealed enhanced autonomic and subjective responses to eye contact only when perceiving another live person. However, these enhanced responses to eye contact are abolished if the viewer believes that the other person is not able to look back at the viewer. We purported to investigate whether this "genuine" eye contact effect can be reproduced with pre-recorded videos of stimulus persons. Autonomic responses, gaze behavior, and subjective self-assessments were measured while participants viewed pre-recorded video persons with direct or averted gaze, imagined that the video person was real, and mentalized that the person could see them or not. Pre-recorded videos did not …

Relation between fixation disparity and the asymmetry between convergent and divergent disparity step responses

2007

Abstract The neural network model of Patel et al. [Patel, S. S., Jiang, B. C., & Ogmen, H. (2001). Vergence dynamics predict fixation disparity. Neural Computation, 13 (7), 1495–1525] predicts that fixation disparity, the vergence error for a stationary fusion stimulus, is the result of asymmetrical dynamic properties of disparity vergence mechanisms: faster (slower) convergent than divergent responses give rise to an eso (exo) fixation disparity, i.e., over-convergence (under-convergence) in stationary fixation. This hypothesis was tested in the present study with an inter-individual approach: in 16 subjects we estimated the vergence step response to a 1 deg disparity stimulus with a subje…

Benefits of Direct Colposcopic Vision for Optimal LLETZ Procedure: A Prospective Multicenter Study.

2015

International audience; Objective The aim of the study was to assess whether direct colposcopic ă vision (DCV) of the cervix during large loop excision of the ă transformation zone (LLETZ) is associated with a decrease in the volume ă and dimensions of specimens or affects margin status at histology. ă Materials and Methods A prospective multicenter observational study of ă 216 women who underwent LLETZ for grades 2 and 3 cervical ă intraepithelial neoplasia was conducted. The volume and dimensions ă (circumference, length, and thickness) of the surgical specimens were ă measured before fixation. Data were compared according to the use of ă colposcopy during LLETZ. The following 3 groups we…
