The Double-Door Tongue Flap for Total Cheek Muscosa Defects

Lining of total cheek mucosa defects can be accomplished by opening the tongue along its lateral border and preparing two myomucosa flaps that can be swung upward and downward like a double door to be sutured into the defect. The tongue is released 3 weeks later in a second-stage operation. The operation is quick and easy compared with other methods to achieve lining for such defects. Tongue function is not impaired after healing of the second-stage operation.

Mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) that lack p53 are hypersensitive to the cytotoxic and genotoxic effect of ultraviolet (UV-C) light. They also display a defect in the recovery from UV-C-induced DNA replication inhibition. An enzyme involved in processing stalled DNA replication forks is flap endonuclease 1 (Fen1). Gene expression profiling of UV-C-irradiated MEFs revealed fen1 to be upregulated, which was confirmed by RT-PCR and Western blot experiments. Anatomic basis for the dorsal radial flap of the thumb: clinical applications

The pattern of the dorsal arterial supply of the thumb was studied by the dissection of 25 thumbs of fresh cadavers. A constant vascular axis was found, originating at the radial a. and communicating at the level of the middle third of the proximal phalanx with the arterial palmar circuit. The constant presence of this vascular axis and its connection with the palmar circuit permits the mobilisation of a dorsal metacarpal skin flap, with a distal pedicle and a reversed flow, that can be used for covering dorsal and palmar losses of substance in the thumb.
