Estrogenic effects of food wrap packaging xenoestrogens and flavonoids in female Wistar rats : a comparative study

International audience; The objective of this study was to compare the estrogenicity of xenoestrogens found in food wrap packaging and phytoestrogen flavonoids. Uterotrophic and vaginal cornification assays were performed on immature and ovariectomized rats. Genistein, bisphenol F, and octylphenol were identified as estrogenic only in immature rats. Using vaginal cornification as a more specific estrogenic parameter, all tested compounds except tangeretin were active in immature rats. While apigenin and kaempferol appeared to have low estrogenic activity, they potentialized the uterotrophic effect of 17β-estradiol in immature rats. Nevertheless, phytoestrogens can target other organs and may disrupt cell proliferation, or could modify endogenous steroid hormone metabolism. Positive effects of pistachio nut consumption on plasma inflammatory biomarkers have been described; however, little is known about molecular events associated with these effects. We studied the anti-inflammatory activity of a hydrophilic extract from Sicilian Pistacia L. (HPE) in a macrophage model and investigated bioactive components relevant to the observed effects. Flavonoids, widespread in edible plants, have been studied extensively for their anticarcinogenic properties. However, only few studies have been done with these constituents being administered by the dietary route. In our research, the effects of feeding rats with flavone, flavanone, tangeretin, and quercetin were investigated on two steps of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis (initiation and promotion). Antioxidant Profile of Mono-and Dihydroxylated Flavone Derivatives in Free Radical Generating Systems

Abstract A number of free radical generating systems were used to investigate the antioxidant properties and structure-activity relationships of a series of monohydroxylated and dihydrox­ylated flavones. Ortho-dihydroxylated flavones showed the highest inhibitory activity on en­ zymic and non-enzymic microsomal lipid peroxidation as well as on peroxyl radical scaveng­ing. Most flavones were weak scavengers of hydroxyl radical, while ortho-dihydroxylated flavones interacted with superoxide anion generated by an enzymic system or by human neutrophils. The effects of a water-soluble extract (WSE) of rosemary and its purified antioxidant rosmarinic acid (RA) on xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes (XME) were studied in rat liver after dietary administration. The modulation of phase I enzymes such as cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A, 2B, 2E1, 3A, and phase II enzymes such as glutathione S-transferase (GST), quinone reductase (QR) and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) was evaluated by measuring enzyme activities with specific substrates.
