A renewed interest in investigating the relationships existing between body size and environmental variables is pervading ecological studies. Phytoplankton has a long tradition as model system in studies of community ecology and several research concepts were developed using these organisms. Abstract An experimental investigation is presented regarding the compressive and shear strength of monolithic and PVB laminated glass elements connected by acrylic glue. Ultrasonic tests were also used to control the efficiency of glued surfaces of glass panels. Twenty-four triplets composed of three float glass elements glued with acrylic adhesive were prepared to perform bond tests. Of these twelve triplets were made with monolithic glass elements with a nominal thickness of 20 mm, while twelve were made with layered glass elements 20 mm thick. Compressed sparse row (CSR) is a frequently used format for sparse matrix storage. However, the state-of-the-art CSR-based sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV) implementations on CUDA-enabled GPUs do not exhibit very high efficiency. This has motivated the development of some alternative storage formats for GPU computing. Unfortunately, these alternatives are incompatible with most CPU-centric programs and require dynamic conversion from CSR at runtime, thus incurring significant computational and storage overheads. Experimental Investigation for Local Tank Inflow Model

In the present paper the effect of private roof tanks and of the float valve characteristics on apparent losses due to water meter errors was investigated via an experimental study. The tests were carried out at the Environmental Hydraulic Laboratory of the University of Enna (Italy), on a high-density polyethylene (HDPE 100 PN16) looped distribution network. The experimental results showed that network pressure plays an important role in the characterisation of the floating ball valve emitter law, but the tank operating condition is the most relevant aspect to be considered mainly for water meter error evaluation. Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of vitrectomy in patients with visually disturbing vitreous opacities. Patients and methods A retrospective analysis of the patient characteristics and the outcome of all pseudophacic eyes, which consecutively received in the decade 1996 to 2005 20 G pars plana vitrectomy for visually disturbing floaters, was carried out at the Mainz University Eye Clinic. Results Forty-one eyes of 32 patients (63 % university graduates, median age: 64 years) were included in the study. The mean axial length of the globe was 25.3 mm (range: 22.8 to 28.9 mm). Particle Detectors made of High Resistivity Czochralski Grown Silicon

We describe the fabrication process of fullsize silicon microstrip detectors processed on silicon wafers grown by magnetic Czochralski method. Defect analysis by DLTS spectroscopy as well as minority carrier lifetime measurements by µPCD method are presented. The electrical and detection properties of the Czochralski silicon detectors are comparable to those of leading commercial detector manufacturers. The radiation hardness of the Czochralski silicon detectors was proved to be superior to the devices made of traditional Float Zone silicon material.

Orientation and order in thin films of a combined liquid crystalline polymer

The order in thin films of a combined liquid crystalline polymer is studied by X-ray reflection. Films of thicknesses of less than 200 nm on float glass are investigated as a function of temperature. The polymer with mesogenic groups in the main and side-chains exhibits smectic and cholesteric mesophases. Measurements in the smectic phases show a Bragg peak and smectic layers are oriented parallel to the substrate. The sample is thus macroscopically ordered by the influence of substrate and free surface. The film surface is very smooth after spincoating; surface roughness is typically 0.8 nm. Float-zone (FZ) silicon often has grown-in defects that are thermally activated in a broad temperature window (≈300–800 °C). These defects cause efficient electron-hole pair recombination, which deteriorates the bulk minority carrier lifetime and thereby possible photovoltaic conversion efficiencies. Little is known so far about these defects which are possibly Si-vacancy/nitrogen-related (VxNy). Herein, it is shown that the defect activation takes place on sub-second timescales, as does the destruction of the defects at higher temperatures.
